Is it really that hard to figure out? Appealing to a large audience previously untapped by other video game consoles might have something to do with it.

It's the most casual, friendly and appealing of the three consoles.

Nintendo have been making a substantial profit since launch on hardware, the Wii is priced pretty much the same as an arcade which one do you think gets more profit? also even though the games are far cheaper to make they are still 90% of the time the same price (infact I find it harder to get Wii bargains).

I would have thought it is pretty obvious. As already mentioned:

They are (ie the Wii and DS) appealing to a far far wider market. The novel controls means everyone can play them and the games are aimed at more casual gamers too. If you think about it its shocking how many more different people the Wii can cater for compared to X360 and PS3 just because of the control method alone.

The price probably has a lotto do with it too. And the games arent the same price as other consoles. At least not PS3 ones. Not here in the UK. Unless im missing something.

Another reason is that it might have its faults but overall the Wii is a fantastic bit of technology. In my experience its not just a novelty ... it does what it does well and people know that and hence still go out to buy one.

It's just one of those things. Nintendo read the current market, took a huge risk, everyone thought they were crazy, but they ended up with the last laugh while hardcore gamers aren't really laughing. Who would've thought games would appeal to a mass market? But Nintendo isn't stupid. The chance they took wasn't grounded in desperation but in reason. They saw how casual friendly games on the DS like Nintendogs, Brain Age, Animal Crossing, and Mario Kart were so successful, that was enough to convince them that something like the Wii would sell. And they were right. Nintendo could've probably made a powerful next-gen console like the PS3 or 360 and just live off their core franchises. I sometimes wish they did just that. And I don't know whether to be happy or angry at Nintendo's new casual focus. Part of me, as that old Nintendo fanboy side in me, wants to be happy that they're doing well. But there's that really distraught, and disappointed side that hates what Nintendo has become. Oh well. That's business. You can't stay in the past forever.

Why? It´s easy:

1) It´s cheap.

2) It´s innovative.

3) it targets a wide public.

4) Nintendo games.

5) Retrocompatibility.

6) His competition did a lot of mistakes (XBOX got the RROD, PS3 his price, etc).

Disadvantages? The technology is a little old, and a lot of 3rd party WII games suck. That´s it.

It does cater to the casual gamers as people have mentioned but lets not forget there is Metroid Prime3, Zelda TP, Mario Galaxy, Fire Emblem, Mario Kart, Battalion Wars2, Paper Mario, and a few others already on the Wii for the long time Nintendo fans (me).

Nintendo turned there backs on hardcore gamers and sold out to casual audiences. It's not like I have a problem with the appealing to a wider audience, that's awesome don't get me wrong. It's that the system and the games are sub-par compared to the PS3 and the Xbox 360.

Nintendo doesn't actually make games; the games assemble themselves out of fear.

Because Nintendo focused their attentiion on more than just the hardcore gamer, and looked at other groups of people too. The PS3 and 360 really only appeal to hardcore gamers, but the Wii on the other hand, appeals to hardcore gamers AND casual gamers. You won't find grandparents playing a 360 or PS3, and you can certainly bet many parents will want to buy their children Wii's. But there are still games for us long-time Nintendo fans and hardcore gamers, too, and not only in market, but on Wii's Virtual console, as well, with a huge library of older, classical games that, again, will appeal to the long-time Nintendo fans or people that just love retro games. I honestly don't think that Nintendo "turned their backs on us hardcore gamers" or whatever. As a hardore gamer, I still found alot of value from buying the Wii, and have not been disappointed...

But anyway, The Wii sells more because it appeals to more kinds of people, which results in more kinds of people spending their cash on the Wii. The Wii can be enjoyed by anyone, and even if you never gamed before, the Wii can still be played and enjoyed.

Of course they would be doing good why wouldn't they be? You take all the kids that parents want let them play really violent games on, there's a lot of them out there. Then you got all of the old people that thanks it fun bowling and everything else. You put them all together and that's a lot of people. But take out my grandpa he plays the 360 lmao he's a cool guy.

Yeah, Nintendo decided to blame its fans on GC's failure and decided to pretty much give up on us and try to take money from another audience. It's not our fault that Nintendo hasn't been as great as its SNES days.

Because they keep on making systems instead of games. First DS, the Wii. They're taking over, CRAP! I've been sick of nintendo since forever. The best one is the originial.

Nah, i figured it out, its because they are greedy, they want to make a console that would be easy to make but at the same time it would make alot of money. They propose motion remote, at first it was a biggy, but then people realized that's its completely pathetic, wish they bought other system instead. Nintendo officially left the gamers because we dont give them enough money, instead they went and target on people that has more money like PARENTS and People with Decent Jobs dont play often. They really dont deserve the money.
