It is slightly better than super mario 64 but times changed and with platformers like rayman 2 and jak and daxter the game was dissapointing (imo)

It's because of the FLUDD water pump imo. People expected an epic platformer in the vein of SM64 but got a game that mostly takes place on just one island (if as varied as possible) and best too much on cleaning stuff with the water pump. In my opinion it was a very good platformer but didn't exactly live up to SM64. But I agree that it's far from bad and people just over-exaggerate when they say how terrible it is.

Probably because the FLUDD water system is a key part of the game, rather than a power up item like a flower, mushroom, or star.

It is nowhere as good as Mario 64. I just didn't find it enjoyable, it didn't feel like a 3d Mario game to me. The FLUD water system shouldn't have been put into the game.

I think it is frowned upon because well Bowser talks and FLUDD was in the game and it lacked the cool power ups of old Mario games.

I personally didn't like how it was based on using a prop and how most of the game was uninteresting to me. Idk, I know a lot of people like this game, but I personally did not. Loved Super Mario 64 and both Galaxy games though.

Because it's different. The same reason Super Mario Bros. 2 (U.S) wasn't liked as much as the other SMB games when it came out. The enemies aren't familiar, the power-ups aren't familiar, and they're not fighting the Koopas and it's not the Mushroom Kingdom. So many people shunned because it wasn't "their" Mario. It's shame because it's a great game.

It's very fun, and the game mechanics are spot on, it's also a pretty impressive game graphically for a Gamecube game. I really enjoyed Super Mario Sunshine. Personally, I enjoyed it a lot more than Super Mario 64.

I guess it's a situation of expectation vs. delivery. I actually expected it to be an awesome platformer with more of the standard Mario game design, but instead I got a level where you can't even jump on an enemy's head without getting covered in mud...which kills you over time. I liked the game eventually, but I was absolutely disappointed in it too, it was too much adventure and not enough actual platforming. Plus the camera was very poorly designed and you'd end up dying pretty often due to that stupid cursed camera.

i agree with emerald..

it was a big deviation of the formula and people reacted..

i also feel sales played a part..the gamecube being dominated by the ps2 meant low sales and it gave people reasons to say it was worse than the others.

For me personally it was the annoying water pump cleaning gimmick, which was simply horrid.

Perhaps the GameCube would have done better initially had the main Mario title been something to behold, rather than something that strayed from the proven formula.

It was a good game that got held back due to one glaring flaw: The camera, oh dear Lord the camera!! I have never died in a game as much as in this one because of a honestly horrendous camera system. There where times where I was moving the C-Stick as much as Mario, specially on the floating platform stages, just readjusting to get a better view of the action. Other times the camera would get stuck on the geometry of levels or go spastic trying to give me a better view of Mario without success (I remember Pinna Park a lot for this). I collected about 40 stars and just stopped the game altogether in disgust, Nintendo just dropped the ball on this one, this game should have never shipped with the broken camera system it has, it was simply unacceptable on a Mario flagship game. Maybe some where willing to put up with the frustration of the camera system, I'm not one of them.

I finished Mario 64 and the camera on that game was no issue for me, even tough and it was one of the earliest full 3D games ever made. Mario Sunshine's I could not bare it, that is my personal experience with both games.

The easy answer is simple: Mario 64 was just that good of a game. All aspects of the game complimented each other perfectly.

Mario 64 was a genre defining title, there was nothing else like it out there at release, and it took years for the competition to catch up, Mario Sunshine on the other hand was irrelevant pretty much immediately on release, with games like Ratchet and Clank making it look like the work of amateurs.

Effectively the Gamecube in general heralded the first time where Nintendo's 1st party titles collectively played second fiddle to 3rd party games, as opposed to influencing the industry. 3rd party companies effectively out Nintendo'd Nintendo with games like Ratchet and Clank, Okami, and Shadow of the Colossus, whilst Nintendo were simply going through the motions and making marginal improvements.

Mario Sunshine was a perfectly fine game, but people expected better.

It was too much of the same water themed levels, and beating a lot of the baddies involved spraying them with F.L.U.D.D.

I was one of the people let down by Sunshine, at first. However, even then I thought it was a more polished game than any of the ones you listed. A lot of the negativity that surrounded Sunshine was due to the setting--people love the Mushroom Kingdom.

I never played any Ratchet and Clank (or Jak & Daxter for that matter) games so I can't comment how the game compared to them but I believe it certainly wasn't irrelevant or amateurish. It was a very good platfromer that just didn't quite live up to SM64 and people's expecations.

I also disagree that 3rd parties outdid Nintendo in the GC era. I think Wind Waker was an excelent game and I'd personally place Okami bellow it. Besides, games like F-Zero GX (co-developed by Sega) and Metroid Prime had basically no competition. It's also debatable if SotC is really better than TP. The only thing where 3rd parties had a possible edge was a feeling of freshness (because Nintendo always bets on the "holy trinity" of Mario, Zelda and Metroid).

I liked the game, a lot in fact. I had a lot of struggles with it, I remember, like those horrid "Secret in ...." levels. I also remember spending around an hour trying to get up to that platform in the docks area without the jet nozzle, I finally figured out I had to float over there, and then ended up getting thrown off when he had only one more tentacle. Needless to say, I had a couple of stupid moments in that game.

That being said, I liked Super Mario 64 more, and Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 were better experiences for me. But I never even realized people looked down on the game. I have yet to play a Mario game I dislike, except for that stupid Doki Doki Panic port that is called Super Mario Bros. 2.

What were people comparing the game to, though? The Gamceube library needed a good Mario platformer and it got one. So there was no reason to hate something different.

People will hate everything that's different. Wind Waker was hated because of it's cartoony look, Metroid Prime was hated because it was first-person, SMS was hated because it was taking place on just one island and because of the water pump, ect.

^ Yeah, I hate the freaking cartoony graphics on WindWaker. So I guess I can understand other people not liking Sunshine for not being the Mushroom Kingdom. But I also hated the long ocean parts on WindWaker.

I didn't say everyone dislike those games but it's pretty common that people respond negatively when they get something they don't expect. Just think about all the hate against SMB.2 - it was far from a bad game but people hated it because it wasn't what they expected.
