Why is the PS2 lumped in here as a "legacy" platform?

Topic. In all seriousness, why? The Playstation 2 is selling better than its supposed next-generation "big brother", the PS3. Even GameSpot acknowledges the platform: just look up. Notice how next to home we see: PC, xbox 360, wii, ps3, ps2, psp and ds? I think this venerable platform deserves its own forums, it's not dead yet! :) I mean, developers are still releasing new titles for the PS2, that's gotta count for something right? You don't see xbox games or gamecube games being made anymore, so I can agree they should be lumped in with the N64 and Dreamcast as legacy consoles, but the PS2 still has fight left in it!

Anyone agree? Or am I just talking into the wind...?

Is game boy advance still being manufactured and developed as well? I didn't know that.. I assumed it stopped when the DS came out. Is that not right?

I think its pathetic too. The PS2 board was more active than the PSP board. The system is toughing it out as well as the Next-Gens, and its still getting a good amount of support, unlike the GC and Xbox which died back in '06.

Above all, its just GameSpot trying to force everyone into the expensive world of Next-Gen.

It lived just as lucrative a life. The last game to come out was....I know FF6 Advance came out pretty late. 2007, 3 years after the DS came out.

I agree with OP. There are still new games coming out. The PS2 itself continues to sell. I think Gamespot jumped the gun on this one. The PS2 isn't dead yet.

However, I imagine there was a concern that it would really offend Gamecube and X-box fans if they were sent off to the legacy forum and the PS2 was not. Maybe this was a move to keep the peace?

Don't slight the Xbox, though. There was still a fair amount of activity in the forum. Maybe there aren't any new games coming out for it, but it's still a great system. My Xbox satisfies my gaming needs.

PS2 may be the most "lively" of the legacy plats but it is not next gen. I have my PS2 sitting next to my newer console and still play both and while yes they do still make some new games for the PS2 there are not as many as once there were and I while will be sad to see it die out I know it is inevitable.

while legacy platforms is a great deal of PS2 discussion at times there are other 6th gen consoles that are still active. Even a new Dream cast.

and earlier consoles too so there is either the solution of making separate forums with little or no activity or putting them all together as here.

As with stickies the solution will not make everyone happy but it seems to work.

I've been doing my part to, as a proud new ps2 owner!!! I said goodbye to a rental ps3 and HELLO to MY shiny new silver slim ps2, I'm extremely happy with it. Now I'm awaiting an ole friend from school to bring me an xbox they her and her husband don't play. Alright!DManSteelerFan

Simple, it's technically not a current generation console. It may still have games coming out for it, but that doesn't make it a current generation console. If that was the case, then the original PlayStation would have been a part of the previous generation of console for the first few years following the release of the PlayStation 2. But it wasn't, so why the should the PS2 be an exception?

As for why it's listed with all the current generation consoles, it's because there are still games being made for it. GameSpot's always had the consoles that are still getting games made for 'em in that area. Once there's no more games being made for it, I imagine it'll be taken down from that area. But until then it'll stay there with the other consoles.

I do not think the solution is to try and get a new PS2 forum,but for all of us to get more active on this board. Because short of a few ports and occasional exclusives, the ps2 is pretty much dead. The last game to come out that a lot of people really talked about was God of War 2.

Why has this topic been resurrected? A year and a half ago I posted in this thread saying that it was too early to lay the PS2 to rest. At that time, I was right. That was the point of this thread -- that the PS2 was getting too early of a death from Gamespot.

A year and a half later, things have changed.I don't think there is any doubt that the PS2 belongs in the legacy forums today. Is there still a controversy about that here?

The only argument I could think of for resurrecting this old line of thought would be if you considered the PS2 a viable competitor of the Wii. But I don't even think that works because if thePS2 is competing with the Wii, it is doing so withits old games, not its new games. So discussion of the PS2 will still be about games that have already been released. Anyway, if someone wants to pursue that line of thought they should probably start a new thread.

PS2 might be still in production, but its best days are behind it. It is talked about more in a legacy way than a current gen console. Nobody wants to know what's coming out unless its a new collection. Everyone wants to know what the best games are from the past. wstfld

^ i tend to think this as well. gamespot seems to be sponsered by big business, and they have a particular mission statement.

however, i guess it is just 'neater' and 'technically' more 'logical' to keep things in order of: PS2/GC/XBOX/GBA - then PS3/Wii/360/DS/PSP etc. etc.

Not just gamespot, but on majority of gaming sites, PS2 has been sidelined...and that is not fair at all.

I just don't understand the reason behind it.

They are giving priority to consoles like DS..it is nothing compared to the PS2.

Just having that touch effect, doesn't make one forget about its weird graphics compared to PS2.

I really don't like this. PS2 is a legend. A complete revolution for the gaming industry.

actually gba stopped in 2008 , , quite a bit into the ds life,

but any how the reason is, it does not compete with ps3 360 or wii ,
they dont count ps2 in this gens sales,, , because its not the main console for sony this gen ,, its the wii vs 360 vs ps3 ,, ps2 is a side platform much like what ps1 was with ps2 ,

i do like the fact ps2 is still being developed for, , i rather pay 30 for a game then 60 , ,

i dont get to get gc games so i get ps2 instead, , , i liked gc last gen but own a ps2 and xbox their good, ,

and motorstorm is proof ps2 still has it,

look at wii , its basically a gc with motion controls, so it goes where the gc left off , ,

their even remakig some gc games , ,

so ya ps2 thanks to wii and psp ,, , has a hefty market, this is why wii is good, , wii has the games people wnat but it also has the bargin stuff other people on small budgets can afford on ps2 or wii , ,

its tough to say ps2 is dead when its not

GameSpot has been in extreme denial about the PS2 still going strong, for a while now.. In Dec. I bought one of the new model 90001s. It was in the PS2 section of Best Buy - where they sell the PS2s and PS2 games. . . Maybe the editors of GameSpot need to get out more.
