Really? I've noticed that a pretty equal amount of people like both, given they are usually pretty different types of gamers. I personally like JRPGs more, but I still fully admit that the best RPG I've played this gen was Mass Effect.

If the majority of gamers preferred them, there'd be more of them. It's more a matter of there aren't that many good ones recently, so the fans are posting to reassure themselves about them and discuss their future.

I didn't realise that they do.

I think it really depends on what forum you go on - consoles don't really have any of the best WRPGs, so JRPGs would be more popular on console-focussed forums. If you go on PC forums, JRPGs don't get much love at all.

Huh.

I'd personally out that the other way around, because I'm sick of JRPG character cliches (and that Vanille-esque ditzy girl stereotype needs to die in a fire).

I can understand that for a lot of role-playing games, but games like Final Fantasy XIII don't necessarily have a superb cast to be around with.

sometimes it matters where your from like Valkyrie chronicles based on alternate Europe, or White knight chronicles, I agree that FF13 did not have a good cast but I would also like to state that FF13 is one of the worst RPG games for me this gen. A better example for me would be tales of vesperia, but at the end of the day it comes down to preference. Infinite undiscovery wasn't so bad either character wise. Idk thats just me though, I will always like the Kingdom Hearts cliche type.

long sidequest or added "gametime"(optional bosses, some equipment story enchancement and side stories of the characters), mostly JRPG are target for "Teens" so you get the picture thats why some of them get it because "anime reference", Comedy-Stories(um Disgaea or Atelier Series? if you play some of them got good humour) and Gameplay fun

demons soul is japannese i think, anyway i like jrpgs because they have better stories in my opinion and i like more the anime style and battle systems, wrpgs like fallout and oblivion are very repetitive, and boring.

I believe it seems that way because WRPGs were on PC mainly until this generation. JRPGs dominated the console and handheld scenes. Alot of gamers these days seem to be moving over to WRPGs I see because of the highest quality JRPGs moving primarily to handhelds because of the Japanese Gaming market.

I personally don'tlike many WRPGs because I don't like the style and atmosphere of most of them. I also perfer turn based combat and I'm not that big on customization and playing a nameless hero. What I do enjoy about WRPGs are the more meaningful side quests and open world gameplay.

I don't think the majority of gamers like JRPGs. I think they are pretty equal to be honest. I prefer WRPGs, but when i was younger i was all over the JRPGs, which now seem to be to "kiddy" for me. I like the content in the WRPGs more.

Actually I'd say this gen WRPGs are way more popular and successful unless you live in Japan. Past gens, unless you were an old-school PC gamer, WRPGs remained largely untouched.

Just look at the sales figures and it's pretty obvious that gamers don't prefer JRPG's. There are a few titles, namely Final Fantasy, that sell well, but other than that they're barely worth localizing for areas outside of Japan. It's just that your typical JRPG lover is exactly the type of person who tends to spend a lot of time posting on internet message boards, so a minuscule minority tends to appear as if they're quite large in number.

JRPGs are similar to FPS in the fact that there isn't much freedom in quest choice - you generally have to follow a linear path. WRPGs on the other hand allow you to select quests in the order you wish to run them.

I like both JRPG and WRPG. I enjoy the game play from JRPG and better main characters. Lately, I have been getting sick of the more stagnate WRPG.

If anything JRPGs have been on the decline.. just look at the awesome JRPGs that don't even get imported to NA.. Sucks though, I could always use a great JRPG.

I prefer WRPGs due to their lack of anime style. The only game I didn't mind it in was FF XIII, which I know a lot of people hate that game. WRPGs just fell a lot more mature in the art style and the world you can go around in. IDK if mature is the right word, maybe more realistic. I know I'd rather go around the sci-fi world of the ME series than go through an anime inspired one. Plus, I was never a fan of turnbased combat, so I could never get into any of the ones on the ps2. I still consider the ES games to be the best rpgs due to their massive maps, tons of stuff to do, and the overall atmosphere just sucks me in more than JRPGs do.

After you play Vagrant Story or SMT: Nocturne or FF9 you'll realize why jrpg's are looked on so favourably. It's past now though, they are all older ones, people hope they might return to the greatness of the old ones someday.

Deus Ex, Morrowind and maybe mass effect are some western ones that are probably just as good though.

this generation we're seeing a lot more wrpg's making it onto consoles and theyve been more popular here from what i see. there have been good jrpg's this generation, but i think there have been a few more good western ones (particularly ones getting big multiplatform releases for everyone to play) and i think thats the first reason. beyond that, more wrpg's are getting combined with western genre's like fps/tps and that has to have a bit of a trojan horse effect over here.

It's always seemed pretty equal to me. I prefer WRPG games because they tend to be more open. But that doesn't keep me from getting plenty of enjoyment from JRPGs.

I thought it was the other way around in America... As for me, I like the feel of JP games more (when it comes to RPGs).

I don't know anyone who feels that way. Characters in JRPGS are downright terrible.

Shazaaman

That is a over used stereotype. They are terrible characters in other games type but that is a much about opinion.
