2D games not on handhelds dont sell.XaosII
That's not really a statement that can be backed up. In the last 5 years how many 2-D games have even been made? And by that I don't mean any games targeted at theunder 6 years old group, classic game compilations,or low budget shovelware. Off the top of my head I can only think of Alien Hominid, Odin Sphere, and a couple shooters (maybe Paper Mario, but really that's 2-D characters in a 3-D realm). There just aren't enough quality 2D games to really back that up.
If a developer put out a major fanchise game onto 2-D and took some time to develop it, it would sell just fine. If Konami made a 2-D Castlevania for a console it would be a million seller easily.
I think it comes down to a lot of developers feeling limited in a 2-D setting. A game can still look great in 2-D, as Odin Sphere proved, but you're limited in so many other ways. There's only so many combat options in a 2-D realm. There's only so many special effects you can pull off. Developers generally don't like to be limited as to what they can do, and 2-D does that.
I could live with a side scrolling "2d" game where you could go up or down into the foreground and that would be the only "3d" motion in it.
I think, wrongly, that the Beatemup died with the advent of 3D gaming. It's really sad.
cause they suck, enough said, some r good most suckgahzoo
That's the sort of comment I expect from a guy with Master Chief in his avatar. Go play Castlevania : Symphony of the Night. That game is 5x better than your precious Halo. Seriously, everyone needs to play that game. It's brilliant.
I think that American gamers, for better or worse, havemigrated away from games with cartoon (a.k.a. hand drawn) graphics. It seems we havecollectively latched on to the notion that games withsuper realistic graphics are the only titles worth our while. It's a shame, for while I have respect for both and love both.....for me nothing is better than a hand drawn 2Dsprite.
