^Neat ideas, middling execution, and a victim of the incredibly stupid idea that all new games need to be $59. I'll Remember It when it hits the bargain bin
Remember Me was a fascinating experience for me, one that I return to quite often. I agree that the gameplay is largely mediocre in execution but there's something about it that I really engages me. For example, I love the fact that combos don't merely do damage and the game has some really cool encounters that force you to take advatange of everything you have. Combined that with the beautiful aesthetics, an amazing soundtrack, and a somewhat trippy story and you have one of the more interesting games I've played all year.
Visually it's very appealing. The story is ok, but it's knee-capped by inconsistent voice work. The main character is very well acted, but a lot of the secondary characters remind me of bad anime dubs.
The combat mechanics are fun initially, but the game withholds too much of its limited depth for too long, forcing you to play long stretches with just a handful of techniques. It's also pretty easy, save for a few cheap shot attacks like homing projectiles from off screen. Boss fights are interesting in concept, but especially if you start off on the game's hardest setting, they quickly degenerate into pure drudgery, repeating the same patterns over and over to whittle down a very slow diminishing life bar.
I thought it was a terrible decision to use Uncharted style platforming. To me, the flow of this game is more like Prince of Persia in that many levels, especially early on, feature more platforming than combat. The platforming shouldn't be so simple as "find the orange arrow." In uncharted, platforming is integrated into the combat, and when it's not, it's more for flavor and suspense. The platforming here is more of a central element and so I felt that it, too, should be challenging, which uncharted style platforming is not designed to be.
Overall, a lot of solid ideas and a really creative concept that probably won't be revisited again, sadly, because it's initial showing leaves a lot to be desired.
Played the first few sections, and it indeed tries to be every successful game of the past in some manner, like Combat of Arkham City and Plattforming of Assassin's Creed, but in both fields it doesn't do itself a favor, combat is clunky and very repetetive (you can't even put together your OWN combo buttons, you'll HAVE to go with the predefined ones, just changing effects on them), and the plattforming doesn't feel as fluent and intuitive as it felt in the AC Series.
Positive Points so far going for it are the Memory Remixes, the interesting game world and so far the very interesting main character, I'm really curious to see what her personal story will turn out like.
I haven't played it in a while and I don't think I'm close to finishing the game, but I do like the game quite a bit. I find the combat to be lacking; I wish Dontnod had included an Arkham style counter instead of dodging. The graphics are amazing and the overall style of the game is great; Neo-Paris is one very pretty city.
Hmm, I think I'm going to go play Remember Me now.
Because its a decent game with some horrible things :) but most people i have heard have not had anything but praise about it. But it could do with some polish, particular the combo´s, combat, enemies and camerahandling. It is a good games. it done some original stuff (memory remixes). sleeper hit of the year.

The game videos from last year promised an open world game that looked fascinating:

But in the end, they had to cut scope down to the point that in the end it was just a linear beat-em-up adventure game. The elements of the gameplay that were most unique about it (i.e. the memory remixes) were so seldom used that they were little more than a gimmick. Linear, story driven beat em ups can work when the story is excellent (i.e. games like The Last of Us) but Remember Me's story and voice acting were just decent. The environments were pretty detailed, but the extremely linear path progression made them feel more like video game setpieces than real places that you could explore.
In the end, I enjoyed the game but I was a little bit underwhelmed relative to the expectations set by the early videos.
