Why do nowadays games still have squarish objects?
To answer your question - because very hi-res textures eat a lot of video memory and not everyone has a 2 gig graphics card.
It's a combination of factors. First of all, most developers nowadays develop for multiple platforms, and with multiplat development, you always have to take the weakest link into consideration. More simply put: most PC games are glorified console ports.
Secondly, high system requirements make for a smaller install market, i.e. less potential income.
And thirdly, quite some games focus instead on increasing the scope of their games, which eats most of the video memory that the high-res textures would've been able to take.
It takes a lot of power to render a nice, high-res texture. It has to load in so much more information to make everything look crystal clear. Even now computers and consoles haven't progressed to the stage where you can have all that immediately. It's why there was so much talk of texture pop-in in Rage, because they wanted you to get the high-res textures, at the expense of the pop-in.
You have a PC, which is better than consoles. However, developers make games for consoles in mind, so most games won't feature high res textures for this reason. This is also the reason why hardware has been able to last so long and stay decent for future games.
