Is it as simple as "Hey, they are familiar to it and will just buy it. We will wait to the next console to actually start something new."? Whats so bad about starting a new series?

Enough with this already. I'm prefectly fine with more of the same if the stuff is good. Besides, there is a landslide of new IPs coming out every generation.

It makes good financial sense, sequels are cheaper and safer than new IPs

That's the long and short of it. We can complain all we want, but economics is unyielding.

i think its pretty telling that you phrase the issue like its a matter of making a sequel or starting a new series. gamers' purchasing decisions seem to revolve around buying what theyve already played rather than seeking out something a little more fresh.

Easier to build off of something already established and the fanbase wants to see more of what they have enjoyed previously. There's still plenty of new games that come out though. I love my sequels as well since when I enjoy a game I naturally want to see more of it.

They sell on name recognition alone, and it's great for the publisher and developer because they can put out several sub par/bad sequels in a row and people still buy the next one because back on the PS2 it had one really excellent game.

This. I would also like to add that we are nearing the end of a console generation, so new IPs are going to be thinning out until the next gen consoles come out.

Sequels keep consumers hang on to the first releases and sequels usually come up when the first ones are big hits. The more the sequel, the better the first ones since there wouldn't be sequels if the first ones are bad. Also, economics plays a part in sequels too as it's cheaper and more convenient to produce since the first one already have acquired consumers. Starting new ones meant being back from zero.

There have always been sequels coming out. I have no problem with it, but once they hit the trilogy mark it's usually a time for a break. Like Assassin's Creed, they kept cranking them out that I ended up skipping Revelations and am going right to AC3, as I just got tired of them. If it weren't for sequels we wouldn't have Super Mario 64, and I think that alone is reason enough to have sequels.

Plus, there are plenty of original games coming out, they just don't have the same super advertising as established series such as COD, Madden (always good commercials), BF3, and others of the like. These games get ads on pretty much all mainstream outlets, while games like Sleeping Dogs and Deus Ex only get advertising on TV channels such as SyFy (which is kind of ironic since DE has more sci-fi than SyFy does) and G4.

Basically, there are plenty of new games and even solid sequels coming out, but they are usually a little harder to get info on since they're not on the front page of everything.

I find sequels to be more innovative and daring than new ips are.

Why not do a sequel? If the game has a ton of fans, and the story has a logical way of advancing, then there should be a sequel. I always see these youtube videos from people who think their being witty by pointing out all the 2's and 3's coming out. I don't really see the big deal, though there is the argument all these sequels stop innovation, but you can't hate a series just because it is a series. There need to be logical complaints against it.

I personally don't have a problem with sequels. I think it's more that there's too many of them coming out that bothers people..but as been stated these Publishers and Developers want(and need) to make money so they go with sequels because they're safer and more likely to sell than an new IP.

I like sequels, they allow developers to improve upon great foundations from within the first game. I just don't think they should over do it with too many sequels.

Conversely, what's so bad with continuing a series as long as it's good?
