That is something I have always wondered. I won't deny, I have used female charactes, for example in WoW, but that was because well, the male Blood elf looks like a *insert word here* and the allies races male guys look quite awful with the exception of night elfs. If you have played with a female character or in odd cases, females that use male characters (if there is a choice for gender) why do you use it?

Variety. Some games it will open new/different quests and the female character may change up the gameplay depending on the game. I mostly pick a male character play first.

Quite a few reasons, mainly it makes the game interesting and allows roleplaying from a different perspective. Seeing a story from someone elses perspective is why we play roleplaying games so why not go all the way?

  • female characters typically get more help and free stuff
  • some roles work better as a female and they want to play that role
  • they prefer looking at the female characters
  • there's more customization for the female characters
  • they want to know what life is like being a girl
  • Male Chars look weird in a robe

Thinking about it, I kinda have a sexist/stereotypical view.

Chicks are mages and rouges, dudes swing axes. In all the fantasy films and televison it's the same.

And then from an RPG perspective it makes it even more interesting to make a female warrior, breaks the mould.

Well..why not? Having a problem with it comes off as a bit juvenile.

I grew out of that "MUST PLAY MALE CHARACTERS ONLY" thing fairly early on, playing fighting games and such. This was reinforced later on with games like Diablo, which had gender restrictions on classes.

In my time with WoW I made both male and female characters (generally made my DPS/tank characters male, healers/RDPS female.) Now, when you play a female character and start pretending to actually be female, then it gets a bit weird..but whatever floats your boat.

I can't play a female protagonist in a story-oriented singleplayer RPG, though..feels strange to me.

tbh I think I'm an inherently sexist gamer. Any time I play a game with custom characters, I'll go for the male option. Same with fighting games, most of my mains tend to be dudes too (with the exception of Sophia in Soul Calibur). in my defence, the last custom character I made was female, in Saints Row 2. Although she was a heinously fat black woman. I probably just have deep-seated issues

Sometimes it's simply better to watch a girl on screen than a guy. Sometimes the voice acting is vastly superior for the girl too (as is the case in Mass Effect 2).

Many reasons.
  • Variety
  • More appealing either visually, voice, or just character traits.
  • Changes how the game unfolds.
  • Has a more suitable moveset to my style of play. ie. Fighting Games

ive done it in 2 games (im a gent for the record) Dungeon siege...i cant explain it. maybe its due to the adds or something. but i always play a red haired female character like on the box. something feels....offf....if i play as a male character. Guild wars......armor visual preference really. i have 3 male and 3 female characters. i have a female mesmer, assasin and paragon. mesmer as im a sucker for long trench coats and her ball dress is close. assasin as i have a nice mixture of kurzick and luxon armor that looks ace (and everyone knows women make better assasins :P) and the paragon because...well....the guys are in skirts.

I always choose a 'good' male character first (Mass Effect, Fable, Knights of the Old Republic, Fallout 3). If the game is good enough and there is enough content I'll play through it again as differently as I can so that typically means an evil female character.

It's the way I role.

Eye Candy I suppose. They can "create" the image of a woman with their prefered looks. Of course that's not so say all do it just for that reason.

This, pretty much. And it allows you to play some funny tricks on people in games like WoW where every second alliance player seems to fully believe you are female IRL if you play a female character in the game.

1. I'm a teenage boy.:P

2. The classes are in some cases preferable: for example, I chose the Shooter class in Zenonia 2 because I just thought it was better. I always lean toward ranged classes/mages.

3. Eye candy... teehe

4. Being able to play as a female is a nice change of pace.

I end up playing as a female model quite frequently... the #1 reason is because the male models often look quite feminine, so I might as well just play a girl if I'm going to look like one.

To be honest, I hardly play as a female character. Because when I role-play, I want to role-play as how I want to be. But now, depending if the game is long and tiresome and there isn't anything really to do on it. I will play as a girl, and see if anything is different for her than for the guy, and as mentioned way before If I'm going to be looking at someone's butt it had better be a female, but then I'm straight. Some males want to stare at males' butts to be fair. My friend played as female whenever he got the chance, he loved staring at their goodies.

I'm highly uncomfortable playing as a male character and have frankly gotten sick and tired of the same generic male only character in games, it's boring.

I prefer having a gender choice in games so that I can avoid being forced to play yet another male character. Much more comfortable and at ease with female characters.

Or sometimes the male model looks quite ugly. Look for example the human male model of WoW. Also, I think that the reason you posted is one of the main reasons I roled as a female BE. I mean, if the male BE looks quite feminine then better play with a real feminine character.

I think the main reason people do is because

I think every man likes being told their pretty or being hit on by another man who thinks they are a beautiful woman.

Most games that let you choose are RPGs and for me it depends on the kind of RPG I'm playing: if it's a game that lets you create a silent protagonist from scratch (Oblivion, Fallout 3), I'll probably always stick with a male character. If it's a game like Mass Effect that features two sets of voice acting for male and female Shepard, I'll play both. Incidentally, I prefer female Shepard over Male Shepard.

The female voice acting is FAR superior to the male. I also find it easier to distance myself from the character when playing a female, so with something like Mass Effect I can go all renegade and not feel guilty at all. I figure my Shepard is just PMSing her way across the galaxy and it works incredibly well.

I love it. Every time I have the chance of choosing a female character, I'll pick her up over a man. Women can pull the badass evil stunt far better than men, proof of that is my unbelievably ruthless scarred female Shep and my no-nonsense female Grey Warden in DA: O.

Men are repulsive, women are gorgeous.

Playing as an easier on the eyes character doesn't put me any closer to being a female than playing Madden brings me to being a pro athlete or playing CoD brings me to being a soldier.

Well, in certain games you have no choice. Lead character in Phantasy Star is a woman. Same for Metroid. And, in certain parts, Final Fantasy XIII. Gotta love Lightning. In one game in particular, I made it a conscious choice. the game is Fallout 3. I choose female because of the Black Widow perk. it equates to a 10% more damge to the opposite sex, and some interesting conversations with certain males, in particular, Mister Burke and Ronald Laren in Girdershade. Neither conversation I will put here. :)

I'm a girl and I pretty much always use a male character. I was tempted to use a female one on Saints Row 2, but men just have better clothing and it would often seem stupid seeing a skinny girl take out huge guys. In Fable 2 I did use a girl, and that is one of the few times I chose to play as a girl instead of a guy.

Not to mention Jennifer Hale is an excellent voice actor and simply does a better job bringing the character to life than her male counterpart.

Same here. A good example of this is RE5, Chris is stiff and typical for a guy and Sheva the female character is far more interesting to play as because she does all sorts of flips and kicks.
