Why are politicians and cops hating on video game violence in games like Saints Row 2? It's like they don't want people to have fun. There is a very rare chance that someone stupidly does what the game tells them to do, such as run over pedestrians or kill people with chainsaws. I know it can happen, and has happened, but most people know that it is plain stupid and can get you in a crap load of trouble. Video game violence lets gamers take a break from their everyday life and live a different life in a video game. I actually think that this can stop a few killers from killing people and release their anger in video games. Video game violence is for entertainment use only, so why do most people have a heart attack over it? What do you think?

Well all I can say is that I totally agree with you. I think they hate violent video games because every-time they hear about a killing on TV, they automatically think, "The video games," maybe because they have never actually played the video games themselves.

I'm guessing the main reason is because it is a young medium and easy to attack.

I was going more for the fact that it was invented in the last 50 years. When was the last time somebody attacked literature (NOT A SINGLE BOOK, but the medium itself) as corrupt and evil?

They are making a fuss over it because despite the age rating system, underage children also play them and the games can be a bad influence on them. There are also people that does get affected by the violence and takes it out of the game and into their daily lives, the Media is afraid it will become a common a national/worldwide problem.

I will agree they are overreacting at times but I can also understand their concern.

I think a lot of these cases don't seem to be a problem with violence, just games that have pointless violence (from a ethical moral standard of society). What exactly is the purpose of the violence in Saints Row 2? GTA 3 or 4? Some people have a problem with all violence in all games and I think they have some issues, but in some respects the fight against games with this 'meaningless violence' is warranted.

i think more along the lines that videogames are Hands on, and you are actively making the choices in whatever game you are playing. EI: sure you can beat down a pedestrian, but do you really need to stand there for a 30seconds stomping them? Fun? maybe. But most of us know the difference between the real world and a fantasy world.

Yes its a newer medium, and we just have to believe that this rampant "apparently, after playing GTA4" crap that makes headlines, will end up on the wayside one day.

Nobody complains about Movies anymore. or music for that matter, which i believe has a way stronger emotional connection to many people out there than video games could ever have.

Society just seems complacent with the utter nonsense that if fed to them from govt. officials and the media. They rarely find truth on there own.

Hands on? Actively making choices? Kinda sounds like the shallow stuff anti-video-game-buttholes spout. Hell, a common complaint among gamers is that the games give them no choice (or the illusion of choice, rather). And yes, I think we all hope for the day video games are no longer the scapegoat. Sure, people complain about movies and music, but those have become revered, respected, and immune to censorship. Seriously, as soon as somebody suggests that you remove the word "****" (take your pick on what that means) from a key dialogue in a movie, free speech is spouted. Why not for censorship of video games? And that's unfortunately true of most society: not only do people not really seek intelligence or truth, but they take pride in not doing so, attacking the character of those who do.

I like You two already. This world isn't about achieving anything at all. Some think they want to achieve something, but it doesn't matter whether it is for real or not. Yeah it does, to some extend...
It's all show.
(The worst thing is that even though i understand its importance even i can't work my mind on it 24/7, only a few hours a week. And i don't know yet what is causing this.)

I detest censorship but i guess there are too many crazy people around. The other day i heard democracy can't be preserved when people are allowed to publish anything they want in a democracy. Maybe this is kind of the same thing. Matter of personal and political control.

No, I'm talking about anti-intellectualism.

Moving on, censorship is a slippery slope (like a lot of things, apparently). If you censor one thing, where do you draw the line? And who exactly calls the shots? That line only applies to societies where people are mostly screwed up. In any good society, the people will be moral enough to regulate themselves to the extent needed to obliterate the flaws of many freedoms.

I was being too vague, past 2 am. We're talking about the same thing but Your words are prettier.
People want to not understand, then lack control.

Video games are going to continue to take flak until something new comes along. Did you know that during the times of the Roman Empire, people actually said that the Theatre destroyed society and corrupted their youth.

...

What?

...

It's a flippin' theatre. You're watching people act out stories, instead of reading a book. No special effects (wait another 1900 years for those), no blood (except for sheep bladders filled with red ink, looks totally fake anyway), and a helluva good plot (have you guys ever read Oedipus? FANTASTIC!). It's like watching a novel unfold before your eyes. What's wrong with it?

Same dealy-bob with video games. Mostly over-the-top, and nobody in their right mind is stupid enough to do that kind of stuff anyway. Go take your witch hunts somewhere else.

To add onto your point, theaters were considered immoral and evil during the Elizabethian Era, back when Shakespeare was writing plays. And look how honored the medium is today.

agreed. its just so easy to blame social violence, mostly younger violence on gaming. its a scapegoat.

Also politicians in this age gets attacked if they don't attack.

If they don't strike first, they all that complaints will go straight to government. Because government is blaming something else, they are saved from criticism.

sad world we live in.
