Perhaps this will ease your paranoid mind:
The effectiveness of subliminal messaging has been demonstrated to prime individual responses and stimulate mild emotional activity. Applications, however, often base themselves on the persuasiveness of the message. The near-consensus among research psychologists is that subliminal messages do not produce a powerful, enduring effect on behavior;and that laboratory research reveals little effect beyond a subtle, fleeting effect on thinking....Research upon those claims of lasting effects...conclude thatthere is no effect beyond a placebo.Wikipedia
I actually learned this in AP Psych also...
Subliminal messages can create a small priming effect, but they are NOT powerful by any means.
What is priming you say? I'll give an example...
Quickly ask these questions to a friend out loud:
1. What do the letters s-h-o-p spell? (They will likely answer "shop.")
2. What do you do when you come to a green light? (If they answer right away, they will likely say "stop.")
So yeah... that's basically the extent of the powers of subliminal messaging. :)
