I doubt MS and Sony will let Nintendo be the lone competitor in the casual/non-gaming market next gen.... too much money to be made. Will they all go casual next gen?

I think they are better off battling for the hardcore gamers, and letting Nintendo do whatever they are going to do.

The dominance is really just because the Wii is cheap, it's like saying a Volkswagen dominates a Ferrari but that's just because it's so much cheaper.

We'll see, I don't think either company is going to adopt Ninty's approach. On the other hand, I expect lots of extra peripherals and training games in the coming years.

I think more physical interaction is the future regardless of how succesful the Wii is. Graphics are already great for the new consoles, they can only go so much further with that before they have to start incorporating other things into the gameplay. I don't think they'll necessarily be aiming specifically for casual gamers when they do it.

I think physical interaction is probably oging to be the way forward. And later brain interaction, did anyone else see the news today about producing controllers that react to brainwaves?

The Wii is a fluke. It had solid footing cause there are a few million people who will buy every piece of crap Nintendo produces and a big group of casual gamers bought into waving the wand around. The problem is that it's last gen hardware, so they are going to have a tough time selling new last gen hardware on the next go around....they'll need a new gimmick. Feet sensors or something, and the moment it gets complicated, casuals will jump off the ship. Microsoft and Sony will also be more responsive to the low end next go around and still have credibility amongst more traditional gamers (meaning people who buy games from companies other than Nintendo).

Nintendo is dominating right now, but it's from a weak position.

these two posts sum up what i think. personally, i still wouldnt even call the wii a success yet. financially yes, by leaps and bounds, but as a system, when you look back, right now i think the wii is severely lacking in the same way that nintendo has been ever since the N64. few great games but most everything else is boring shovelware.

while this strategy might be working out great for nintendo, i have a hard time with it since i was used to the NES/SNES glory days. on the other hand, the mass market whoring allows nintendo to put out a cheap cheap system that will let me play the few nintendo staples that really mean something to me.

I expect Nintendo to realise that they need to release more powerful hardware if they want their system to have legs, next-gen.

And I expect Sony and Microsoft will realise that the Wii controller absolutely destroys their pads for Shooters, or any kind of game where aiming is important.

These companies should all really consider packing in a normal pad AND a Wii controller-type pad in their next systems, because both are ideal for certain games. Give the developers the choice.

Of course, if this happens they'll all be pretty much the same, so you'll be buying 3 systems that do the same things. I still say the one-console for all, standardized thing is the way to go in the future, like many developers have begun to finally admit.

You just are not detailed enough on your question. I think XBOX and PS already target the 'casual' market via their arcade service. It just isn't well known, or there is another reason 'casual' people didn't buy one of them, either the controls or price point. So will consoles add motion controls? Will they lower the price point? I can almost be certain that nintendo is the only one that will continue to make a console for under $300 out of the gate... And I think a IR pointer controller is a must for the future if you want to have slicker, easily accessible games. Then again, my next console will probably be a real PC that can do real work AND play games(instead of a budget one that only plays games).

Then why do I find MP3 just above unplayable? This idea that it's some kind of fact that the mote is better for FPS is a myth, it's an opinion, and not one I can agree with.

Dunno. I thought it was much better than before.

I was actually thinking more of the controls for MOH Heroes though. I don't see how anyone can claim an analog stick can allow for precise shooting like that.

Wii has shown that price matters most. So the next Xbox & PS are going to be less of a spec leap over the one they provided this gen, in order to launch at a lower price. We'll also see more focus on the casual market. As I've always said Wii is bad for real gamers.

I don't know I am with Edge, FPS are way way way way more fun to play with the wiimote than with two sticks. The pointer of the wiimote is to me the best advancement in controller design since the introduction of the analog stick.

Next gen Sony and MS better make something that can use an IR sensor when needed. What I would do to be able to play Orange Box with the Wiimote, or the upcoming RE5.

I am a fundamentaly lazy lazy person at heart. I like laying in bed when I play games. I'd be bummed if the wii-mote became the standard. I'm not saying it is too physically taxing, or that it isn't fun. I like the wii-mote. I think it is fun... but I'd be really bummed to see waggle become the wave of the future. I suppose an optional controller could be cool, but optional things don't always get the support that they should.

Its bad that there won't be $600 systems? Can't say I agree. And saying everyone is going to suddenly stop caring about hardcore games and make only Cooking Mama is a paranoid delusion, man.

You can keep the price down and come out with high-tech consoles. It was always done in the past just fine until this generation.

Too true. Sony and MS launch cheap next time. Even if cheap just means $300, they need to make it happen.
I will verbally strangle anyone who mentions the Core SKU as a viable means of launching a cheap console.
It allows for a fun game. I don't care if my shooting is precise or assisted in some way, I just want to be entertained. I haven't played a FPS on the Wii that wasn't a frustrating mess of trying to MOVE with precision. Precise aiming with broken movement doesn't make a fun game. RE4 works on the Wii because positioning Leon is a simple matter, then you aim and shoot. In the FPS games on the Wii though? Ugh. I just want to have fun, and so far, the FPS games on the Wii to me just are not.

$600 is too high and systems don't stay at their highest price for more than 1.5 years. It's bad that the next Xbox & PS are going to be much less powerful than they would've been because they know that launching at a low price will get them much more sales. For example the next Xbox could retail at $400 and be an amazing piece of hardware, but now it will probably launch at $250-$300 and sacrifice quality. I didn't say everyone is going to stop caring about hardcore games. The truth is the bigger the casual market, the less hardcore games get released..... If you can't see that you're the delusional one. One nice example is the team that made Wii Fit was the same team that worked on Zelda TP... They could've been making another Zelda game or something really special and epic, but instead they made a casual excercise game...

Wii is bad for real gamers because it's doing more than one negative. Another negative is that its introducing games to the casual market, games which are pretty horrible, and the majority of casuals won't keep playing after those first few games. This will result in their impression of videogames being based on those few casual games they did play, and will result in them having a more simplistic & superficial impression of videogames. Those "high-tech" consoles won't be as good as they could've been with an extra $100 worth of technology. Would you rather have a Dreamcast's technology versus a PS2? Rather have a Genesis's technology than a SNES?
