After playing Kane and Lynch 2, I realized how bad hitscan is in shooter games. It really short-changes the shotgun in most of these games, and make shooter games feel less like shooting a weapon and more like chipping away at hitpoints like an RPG game.

Will the next gen with more processing power allow for better ballistics in games?

Or are fundamental constraints like bandwidth and lag for multiplayer matches keep this from happening?

Does hitscan mean the thing your targeting will get hit instantly simply because your crosshairs were on it when you pulled the trigger instead of obeying the rules of Physics ?

Thanks ! As a side note, I'm against against Multiplayer modes that feature guns.

FPS became nearly 100% hitscan when arena shooters dropped in popularity, and creative weapons died with them.

Here's my favorite shotgun variation ever: the Flak Cannon. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPde9PDTXJY

The Battlefield games and Sniper Elite do follow the rules of physics. Right now there's no technical reason why games have no ballistics. That's solely the developer's decision. They probably don't do it for most games because it's more difficult to do and only makes sense in long-range combat. In games like CoD, where you barely shoot as far as 30 feet, realistic balistics would be a waste of resources.
