After hearing the news of a $100 PS3 price drop, I was quite tempted to get one. But do you think Microsoft will retaliate by lowering the price of the 360? Because then I would definetaly get the 360....

It would probably help increase the demand for it. Considering it is still less expensive than a PS3, and that they just did the 3-year waranty, I doubt they will have a price drop.

If I was them I'd leave it the way it is for now.  The PS3 still costs more, and the 360 will have Halo 3, Bioshock, and Mass Effect... I think a $400 360 and those games will move nicely over the holiday season.  I think their warranty move is enough to be competitive.  Granted, I think the PS3 is going to have a really great fall/holiday season with the lineup they have and the cheaper pricepoint, but I don't see a $499 PS3 denting 360 sales in a noticeable way.

I doubt that Microsoft will drop the price since PS3 is still more expensive and 360 has a ton of must-buy games coming out this year. If anything, I'd expect Microsoft to offer a free game or a free 2nd wireless controller with the system, but not a price drop. They are already losing way too much money on it right now.

I say yes. They drop the price and introduce a lot of content for casual and family gamers that they've been working on. Trust me, I just have a gut feeling about MS keeping the hardcore satisfied and wooing the rest of the family with tomorrow night's press conference.

A price drop just before the holiday season is likely, but I don't see MS doing it this summer just because Sony does it. Then again, if the price drop helps Sony more than marginally (which I don't really see happening) MS may feel compelled to do it to protect their marketshare.

Yeah, I think they could come off looking bad with a reactionary pricedrop.  It is better to do it on their own terms this fall.

Microsoft won't lower the price. This year might be the fist time since the original Xbox that Microsoft makes a profit on its game console.

No, even the Elite is cheaper than the 60GB. If it gets lower, they might lower it a little, but not much.

There will most definitely be a price drop effective immediately. At least $50, but possibly $100. I could see Microsoft matching Sony's drop dollar for dollar.

Truth is, I think we would have seen a price drop regardless of what Sony did. Microsoft's numbers each month are dwindling. They need to do something regardless of what Sony does/did, because it's become painfully obvious that they've pretty much tapped-out the audience that pays $400 for a console. It's also pretty shameful that the 360 has gone longer without a drop than the PS2 did. I mean, I like the 360, but the PS2 itis not. And while I don't think any one system will be a "PS2" this generation, Microsoft needs to step up and expose the system to a wider audience. This should have happened six months ago.

This is what I figured they'd be thinking.  They don't need to react to this unless it steals their thunder.

Thing is, there is no thunder.

The 360 is selling terribly for a second year system.

You're probably right.  It is hard to wrap my head around how other gamers think... because I can't imagine not owning a next-gen system as a hardcore gamer, but I bet there are a lot of people that are still playing their PS2s, and still playing Halo 2 online just sitting back and waiting for the price to be right.

Fan-f***ing-tastic! Thank god I waited until Halo 3 comes out to buy one. Now I can get an Elite for $79 cheaper.

A premium for $279....nice. But does anyone know how much it will be in the UK?
