Hi Guys I'm a Huge First Person Shooter fan my favorite Games are Half-Life 1 & 2 & All Episodes,Far Cry, Crysis and all other FPS titles. I am also a huge fan of other Action Games like GTA, Assasin's Creed etc.......But what is worrying me is that I have read in many mags that MMORPG is taking over the PC Gaming platform.........And Considering the recent failure of the most wanted FPS for the PC ' Crysis '. Will funny & casual ' Genres ' like MMOPRG take over the PC Arena?.......Please clarify me I'm mystified.......

If there is no ' First Person Shooter ' or ' Action ' Genre in the future then I won't play games anymore...........

interesting things thrown around in this topic. MMORPG's arent really a casual genre. they aim to grasp every type of gamer. i'd say hardcore MMORPG gamer's are the most hardcore in all of gaming. MMO's are certainly not a niche either...

I think FPS will continue to evolve, melding with other genres much as the RPG did. remember when RPGs used to be so easily defined? they still exist, just in more varied ways. most of the genre's that have disappeared or diminished are those which require 2d gaming, but even those are seeing resurgence on the DS and downloadable portions of all 3 consoles.

I highly doubt it....MMO's are very popular in Asia, but in the West, they are not as huge, no matter what WOW makes you think.

FPS genre has taken over the consoles... COD 4 around 7 million and Halo around 8 million. Right now it's huge for the consoles.

You will almost no exclusives for the PC when it comes to FPS, unless Blizzard decides to make one.

The last FPS exclusive to sell over a million for the PC, was BF2.

I am hoping for a revival of single player rpgs on the PC since the Witcher did decently.

The PC will almost be home to niche genres like City Building, or TBS, or those 4x games, adventure games etc etc.

I think FPS games are still too strong to take a heavy fall. MMO's are strong too, but i really dont think ones gunna take the other over. The new game comming out, Huxley for the PC is an MMO FPs, which will be hella cool

What about Crysis? Its an exclusive for the PC that didn't sell as expected.......I am very disappointed with the sales figure of Crysis.....I really want Crysis to be released on the Xbox360 & PS3....SO that more gamers will play it.........

You said MMORPG is very popular in Asia but here in India, RPG is the most hated genre.......I personally hate RPG to the core.....The most popular genres in India were :

1.'Action'(Through GTA)

2.'FPS'(Through Counter Strike)

3.'RTS'(Through Age Of Empires)

MMOs funny and casual? sure wow has its casual aspects but pursuing the late endgame and high level arena is still pretty hardcore and the alot of MMO's are focused much more on the Hardcore. How anyone could consider FPS's more hardcore than MMO's is pretty mind blowing unless you mean 1337 harcore gore from BOOM HEADSHOTS, even online multiplayer FPS play is less Hardcore (term is generally used as a way to define time spent playing). The MMO market is growing but Its not going to dent the FPS market you say crysis didnt do that well but there were a number of multi platform/console ports of Big FPSes this year so i dont know where this concern is coming from.

I enjoy both online RPGs like World of Warcraft and first-person shooters like Half-Life 2. The reason Crysis didn't sell well is due to the heavy system requirements. It's the best looking game out right now on the PC, and I'd love to give it a shot, but not if my system can't handle it well. I'm not about to shell out a boatload of cash on a super high-end gaming rig just for the sake of Crysis.

Also, when people say MMORPGs or RPGs in general are big in Asia, they're talking about South Korea, Taiwan, and Japan. They aren't talking about India, because gaming isn't nearly as big there.

MMORPG's are going to do nothing aside from ruin computer role-playing. Even if they are very popular doesn't prevent developer who specialize in other genres from making their games.

Yeah, I agree about Crysis having hefty system requirements. But I don't think FPS genre will be gone at all. When you think about it, no genre really disappeared at all. I can't think of one genre that used to be popular no longer existing. Maybe the SHMUP, but that's because back in the day it was because of technical limitations that made SHUMPS some of the best in gaming. But even that is still around and I think there are still some SHMUPs in the works like a new Gradius for example.

The FPS has a huge market. Can the market be over flooded with so many bad FPSs that people are no longer interested in them? Maybe, but I think as long as good developers make good FPSs, it will be around.

Also, out of all the FPSs that come out every generation, only a handful are worth playing. Same with every other popular genre like RPGs for example.

I don't see those two genres competing against each others. The FPS games are the ones selling all those video cards, while MMORPGs provide the PC as a platform with it's main killer-app.

No genre ever really dies, but I'm sure that we're going to start seeing a decline in the genre either starting this year or next. This happens with all super-popular genres. During the 8/16-bit days, the platformer was king. What happened? Fighting games also had a massive following, but you don't see a billion releases of those games anymore. Point-and-click adventure? Same thing.

I don't konw what genre will become the new king of the roost, but the decline of the FPS is inevitable.

We just hope(and pray) that the genre will stay alive in the distant future. Else some FPS fan boy like me have to start a company to make high-quality FPS to reintroduce FPS to the massess like id Software did with their Wolfenstien & Doom....................

I don't see how MMOs and FPS are competing. MMOs require a huge investment of time and rely on RPG elements. FPS are rleatively short (don't require the constant time investment) and action oriented. Two completely different genres. For me, I tried WOW and it can't compete for me to playing Far Cry, Halo games, Bioshock, etc. Also, FPS seems to dominate on some console platforms, namely XBOX 360.

How is multiplayer a fad?. In countries like India piracy is the only reason atleast many people are even playing games........And if they buy pirated games and got impressed by the Single player campaign they will defnitely go & buy the Original Copy in order to play the Game online.............Call Of Duty 4 is a great example.......All my friends swear by it.........

Jeff said something on On The Spot once, when someone asked about how fighting games had fallen out of favour, would FPS follow the same path? His response was that fighting games started becoming arcane (had to learn really complex combos and counters etc) but in a FPS you aim and shoot dudes in the face. Most FPS will be easily accessible beause they share basic controls.

While talking about whether FPS Games would be history its extremely pleasing to hear that the Massively popular Command & Conquer RTS would be made in to an FPS in the future........We should Hail its developers..........I'd be one the first to buy that game when it comes out for the PC.............

Well they arn't completly gone tell tale are still making them and have the two greatest adventure game and comic book heroes in their possion so they have a fanbase supporting them. The space sim has died out only a few indie devs tackle them.

It is a very popular genre and some games control better with a FPS perspective. FPS is not going to disappear. At least not in the near future.

Crysis did not fail. It might've failed in the US, but in Europe it sold very well, and this doesn't even account for the online sales.
