*If Money and time were not an issue*

First Question: With the new technology [PS3, Xbox 360, PC] we have now is it possible for a game developer to make a game with the highest quality without losing any game quality? And if so how can they achieve this?

Example:

- Great game play [story, game features, physics]?

- Great graphics [looks almost like real]?

- Fun to play?

- Great online play?

- Highest frame per second [60fps] and TV Resolution support [1080p]?

*Please explain your answer and also please provide your source of information*

I asked this question because some games can run at 60fps and have truly amazing graphics, but the rest of the game quality isn't all that great and some games only run at 30fps, but have great game features.

Second Question: Which game developing company would have the best chance to achieve this:

- Rockstar North?

- Kojima Productions?

- Bungie Software?

- Epic Games?

- 2K Games?

I don't usually make any predictions, but I think Mass Effect has a pretty good chance, honestly.

I personally believe Bioware has the best chance to score a perfect 10. Mass Effect, hopefully, is just the first of many great games to come out for the next-gen systems by Bioware. I also don't think online play is a necessity in order to score a perfect 10.

Valve came damn close with the Orange Box. I think if they had thrown in Day of Defeat Source and/or Counter Strike Source it would have pushed it into the 10 level. The Orange Box is now the highest scoring FPS on the PC... and that's saying something. I highly doubt that any game will score a 10 on Gamespot... with past screw ups like THPS3 I doubt they will ever risk doing it again.

To be honest, they need to start giving them out again. What's the point of there being a 10 if a 9.5 is the highest they'll go anymore? 9.5 is the new 10 now. *shrugs*

GS is on a .5 increment scale now, so you'll never see anything higher than a 9.5 other than a 10.

You wont get a game that looks almost real, not on these consoles.. but it looks darn good to be sure.

I expect the next Shenmue to be real good in the graphics department, as for real life (or close to)graphics.. give it another 7-12 years which is my estimate.

A perfect 10 rating is like the holy grail for a game. If you gave a game a 10, that doesn't leave that goal for all games to try and reach, therfore forcing games to get better and better.

On Gamespot the highest score i saw for a game was GTA: San Andreas [9.6] and Gears of War [9.6]

Halo 3 only got a 9.5. Is Gamespot more stricked these days?

with the old review system he had Soul Calibur (DC), Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64), Chronno Cross (PS1) and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 (DC, I guess) that achieved the perfect ten.

We're talking about the new system.

none. I personally think that id software would have the best chance of scoring a perfect 10 :P. And I also think that Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 getting a 10 is totally inaccurate. I've played games 12 times better with scores half as high. =\

I have to agree with this. Unfortunately, all I've seen is a 9.5 now, even if the game is great. Given, no game is PERFECT, and I think that that is the point behind not giving a 10. A 10 is reserved for a game with no problems, no glitches, a perfect game... and so far, there is no such thing, which, I guess makes sense.

On Gamespot the highest score i saw for a game was GTA: San Andreas [9.6] and Gears of War [9.6]

See, here's the thing. With the new rating scale, obviously as you've noticed, they CAN'T give out 9.6's anymore. Even though I think that Gears of War WAS better than Halo 3, I think Halo 3 probably could've gotten a 9.6 or 9.7 based off of the hype and popularity of it these days.

no game deserves a perfect 10 because no game is flawless. For a game to get a 10 every single person has to like it, it has to have no graphical glitches, incredibly great gameplay with no flaws, and a perfect story.

That's actually not true with the new rating system, which is really the sole arguement for having it. A game can have a few small flaws, but if the final score would have been graded with a 9.8 or 9.9 that would now be rounded up to 10.

I would be surprised if we ever see a 10 rating again. It takes a lot more money to design a game these days which will often result in corners being cut in some areas that may hurt the overall score of a game. At this point 9.5 is the best that most games can get with a 10 being nearly impossible. Watch now in the next few weeks a game will get a 10 and I will look like an idiot.

Note that 10 isn't "perfect" anymore, but rather "prime." That changes it from "best game ever" to "you can't get better than this... for now."

OH! I like that actually! That's quite true. I would say that, lately, sure, I haven't seen one that deserves a 10, even Halo 3, but, honestly, there's got to be a game out there that could get close, if not on there with a 10. We'll just have to see what happens, right?

I don't think it's impossible for a game to get a ten. However, in my honest opinion one thing that can help a game get a ten, is the longevity.

I think 10's should be more frequent. IMO, it's not saying "this game is perfect" but "this game is amazing". No game is perfect.

I think that Gamespot should give out some 10's. It means it's one of the best games ever, not that it's perfect. Movie reviewers usually give out a few A+ or four star reviews every year. If the 10 is unattainable, then why have it? The scale just shifts so that a 9.5 is treated as a 10. I think the problem is that people associate a perfect score with a perfect game. They're not the same; a perfect score just marks a game as one of the best available.

Rockstar or Bioware for sure have the best chance

Rockstar must perfect multiplayer and bring it to single player games. GTA IV is an example of them doing this.

I highly doubt any game will ever recieve a 10 again from Gamespot. Their crew has become way too strict and way too harsh when rating games, and I hate it.

But if any game was close to receive a 10, it would be Call of Duty 4.

Honestly, I think scores mean very little. Ok, they're a good way to express if a game is good or flawed but what , IMO, really matters is the review text. Because, Pro's and Con's, every game has. Even Ocarina of Time had negative points. It just that that every person wieghs every feature their own way. Some people hate really hard games, some love it. some people like in-game advertisement, some don't. some don't even care.

See, though I SOMEWHAT agree with you, I just can't completely. The thing is, games in the past HAVE gotten a 10, and it's not like GameSpot is going to go back and downgrade that score because the game isn't perfectly perfect. I think that there are games out there that could warrant a 10 nowadays still.

Honestly, I think scores mean very little. Ok, they're a good way to express if a game is good or flawed but what , IMO, really matters is the review text. Because, Pro's and Con's, every game has. And finally someone I can agree with. Most people JUST look at the score, and then move on. I used to think that was the be-all-end-all of a review. But it's not. Reading on, I found out that the game had some technical issues, but it had everything I wanted to play. I bought it, and loved it. A score is just that, a numerical answer to if the game overall is good or not, compared to ALL other games.

Fanboy Alert!

I think that GS rarely gives out tens, compared to things likeOPM UK, which has given out at least 10 - maybe it is because they used to have a decimal system, which gives them more flexibility.

To this whole "There's no such thing as a perfect game" thing, well in my opinion I don't believe that since I actually played 2 games that were "perfect" meaning that if you changed anything in it, it would be worse. Even if you made the graphics better in these games, it would loose their stylle and mood by some effect.

And those games are

and

Those are the only games that I would call "Perfect" meaning it's impossible to make the actual game itself better.

Half-Life 2 came so close, but failed because of that stupid "Team" control thing at the end.

There should be more 10's with .5 increments. But no. Why did they change? Was it so hard to say 9.3 or 9.4?
