Okay. I got Windows 8 3 days after launch. Changed back to 7 in a week. I friggin hated Windows 8!!! To me the change from XP to 7 was awesome I LOVED 7 in every way. BUT navigating through the start screen in Windows 8 was simillar to what people wrote about experiencing hell. I Windows 8 is an OS for tablets, not PCs. Even in tutorials they mention touchscreens! Instead of mice!

I think MS are taking a turn towards the casuals. With the rumors of NextBox and Windows 8, I am sure they are.

Windows 8 is better than Windows 7 in pretty much every single way.

I am rather curious to know what is it that people like you do with computers, that you spend so much time inside of the start menu, as opposed to, you know, actually using the software you wanted.

The reality is that Windows 8's start menu and Window 7's start menus have identical usability. They will both take exactly the same number of steps or clicks to get to where you need to.

Windows 8 is perfectly fine. Made for casuals? Well, no. Microsoft is going the way of Apple. They want their own ecosystem of devices that communicate over a unified interface. They're just stumbling with the execution is all. I too was stubborn and didn't see the point of it at first. Now I'm a believer after giving it a shot. Heck, Maintenance alone make W8 an improvement over W7.

Yeah, it's bad.

I will never buy it. Hopefully the next Windows will be better and have UI similar to Windows 7.

go to www.ninite.com and download the classic windows start menu Or download Pokki. You will love windows 8 much better if you just have access to your start menu.

I like Windows 8's increased speeds and most of the changes they made to the tools. I don't get why people complain about the Start (Metro UI) Menu, I've been on Desktop the entire time. Only real complaint I've ever had was the lack of the start button/menu, but there are plenty of dl's that fix that. I use Start8 from Stardock, works great for me.

Not a massive fan of change in the first place but since xp there hasn't really been a very good operating system in my opinion windows vista used up WAY too much memory for an operating system windows 7 << i have never had so many problems with an operating system since milenium edition.. and i am deadly serious windows 8 im not even gonna comment

I love Microsoft's thinking.

Win 8 hardly sells at the $40 upgrade price, yet they end the promotion and now it costs over $100 to upgrade in typical Windows fashion.

Pretty sure the only reason Win 8 is 'selling' is because a lot of new laptops already come with it, so users are forced into it.

Windows 8 is the new Windows Mistake Edition.

OSX now for me :P

I guess its pretty much set in stone now that every second upgrade of Windows is going to be terrible. At least we've got 9 to look forward to, I guess.

Every time I use Windows 8 I can't help but think, what were they thinking? I just don't get the design concept.

I think I'll stick with 7 for the time being. However, something tells me I'll be going with a two OS platform in the future if MS keeps going in this direction. If I want a tablet, I'll get a bloody tablet, not a PC. Perhaps it's just my unfamiliarity with 8, or maybe I'm just getting older and more cynical, but 8 just seems far too gimmicky for me.

Windows 8 isn't that bad. Well once you learn how to get past the short attention span tiles interface, and get into the actual desktop that is.

IMO, unless you install 3rd party software that restores the start menu, Win8 is a pain in the ass.

Your opinion doesn't matter, because, In fact, you are completely wrong.

Windows 8 usability is identical if not superior to Windows 7 in nearly each way.

What can Win 8 do that 7 can't? Except for maybe Secure boot to try and prevent people from dual booting a linux distro.

In fairness to MS what they're doing is actually smart not making 8 a dedicated Desktop OS. Desktop/Laptop PC's are on their way out and tablets and smart phones will be what 90% of people will be using for casual computing within the next five years or so.

Mainly it's just increased speeds, especially boot-up speeds. They've also done some nice work on alot of the tools. O and I'm sure it's much nicer to use 8 then 7 for touch screens, not really pertinent for most of us though. Is that enough to warrant $40 or $100? Guess thats up to the individual user.

Windows 8 does start up and shut down much more quickly than any of its predecessors but the UI is terrible.  Like a Japanese cell phone, you have to click through too many layers of menus to get to where you want to go.

I wouldn't call it a flop, it'll probably make MS billions and come pre-loaded on nearly all manufactured desktops and laptops for at least a couple years which means more money for them. I'd say that's quite successful.

Windows 8 is not all that bad. It gets some getting used to, took me a week or so to get used to it. And you'll soon grow to love the speed it gives. It's much faster than Windows 7. But now that I'm back on my Windows 7, I'm kind of attached to it again and I don't think I'll be getting Windows 8 any time soon. Windows 9 perhaps?

The interface is here to stay regardless of people's opinion on the matter. Most that claim they hate the system haven't really used it. And the folks that still believe that Windows XP is the best windows are simply delusional.

What can Win 8 do that 7 can't?

thecrypticodor

Simple. More utilities are actually built into the operating system itself. Ever try performing chkdsk on large volumes on older versions of Windows? I can scan and repair file system errors on a 2TB HDD in mere minutes now whereas before it took several hours. Antivirus? No need for a separate program, the Microsoft Security Essentials engine is built in. Maintenance, a combination of disk defragmentation, virus scan, and file system scan and repair all in one, another great move by MS. Shoot, W8 goes even further in noob friendliness by actually prompting users to turn off startup processes. Search function is more powerful than ever by breaking down results into apps, files, and settings.

People who rip Windows 8 are just fazed by the start screen and immediately rage quit or they just trash MS because its popular to do so. I get that MS executed their new direction in the most clumsy manner possible, but this is their best OS yet.

Agreed, I also like that they give you an option of getting it without all their programs on it for a lower price, because frankly, I have a hard time remembering when I last used a Microsoft program apart from Office.

For Windows 9 I hope they combine the Modern UI with the old desktop, like having it a pullout start menu on the side or something along those lines. Basically making the default screen the old desktop again, but when you pull your mouse from a corner the Modern UI would pop out where you could put on Live Tiles like the Widgets for Vista/7, along with a search bar, acess to settings, file browser and a turn-off/logout button.

I have used Windows 8. And while the booting speeds are a huge improvement over Windows 7, I still dislike Windows 8. This is because navigating through the start menu sucks. And I keep most of my games in the start menu in Windows 7.

I really, REALLY wanna know what you do that you spend so much time in the start menu as opposed to using the software that you install.

You do realize that the mots effective way to "use" the start menu is to simply press the Windows key and type the first thre or four letters of the application you want?

You do realize this functionality hasn't changed since Windows Vista, 7, or 8?

What happened to simply clicking desktop icons? The Windows 8 UI is simply not intuitive. That goofy tile start menu on top of the desktop makes no sense. Fortunately, I only need to use Windows for software testing. I'll stay with my Macs for everything else.
