I've seen people play this game like addicts. The game is sorta like a drug... plus it's 156-180 bucks a year... read my review for anyone interested...

Anyone agree? What is it about this game that makes everyone go ga-ga? It's sorta like Runescape if you ask me...at leat on the addicting level.

WoW doesn't have me addicted yet. It's simply the best game that I have to play right now. Addiction would imply that I can't stop playing without acting like a crackhead.

Its the social aspect. With most games the only commitment you make is to yourself, so you're free to play when you want, for however long you want. With MMOs you have a commitment to other players, so now you have a schedule. Its not that most people are addicted as much as they're trapped by the commitments to their guilds to play at a certain time for a certain length of time, and have various things done which requires blowing even more time into the game. So for some people games like WoW stop being games and become second jobs.

I got bored of WoW after about 5 days of gameplay. I played FFXI far longer than I played WoW, so I do agree that MMORPGs are far more addictive than regular console games. I think it's a social thing, wanting to meet other players and being part of a big society of friends who enjoy escaping reality.

WoW isn't the first MMO to hook people. Ultima Online and especially Everquest (Evercrack) were infamous for this.

I think what makes them so addicting is the fact that you're continually getting more abilities and cool equipment to show off and use. Plus, there's the whole social aspect of playing with friends and meeting people.

Hmm... I couldn't get into WoW, it bored me to death. I love all the warcraft games, but there's just something that pushes me away from that game.

Yep, WoW is the game that's prompting the American Psychology Association into coming up with a specific clinical name for video game addication.

I actually get a little chill every time someone mentions a Blizzard game and addiction in the same topic. I took a game design class taught by a guy who works at Blizzard and there was an awful lot of talk/study about addiction and addictive properties in that class.

We learned about some interesting studies whererodents are sent through a maze that at the end may have cheese. The study found that the rodent that only received cheese at the end of the mazesome portionof the time were more determined to get to the finish on subsequent runs than those who received cheese 100% of the time. (not due to hunger factors) There is something addictive at the animal level about the element of chance/scarcity. This impacted the way the "drop" style reward system was implemented in Diablo. So next time you are sitting around hoping for a drop in WoW, remember, you and a mouse have more in common than you might think.

I agree it's the genre that is addictive. It's the huge amount of content, the social aspects, the pure joy of levelling up, which in this case counts for something, as you feel you are getting recognized among your peers. WoW just happens to have all those little extra hooks that Blizzrd is so good at creating.

I used to play it a little bit but I just never got into it and I cancelled my subscription because it wasn't worth keeping. I actually didn't enjoy the game that much and wouldn't go back to it again. Although, I can understand why people love and get addicted to it but those elements don't grab my personal tastes.

As a former player of EQ and Dark Ages of Camelot, yes these types of games are addictive. I've never had an issue with any other game but those two it was like I would think about them during my drive home and couldn't wait to get online to play them.

For me personally I think its the social aspect of the game. If you get a group of friends/guild you have a community of people with similar interests. As a 30 year old gamer I find that none of my coworkers play games so I either look to forums or games like MMO for interaction with fellow gamers.

Were it becomes addictive is that you need to keep leveling so you can keep playing with your friends.

i always wondered, if someone calls it addictive, shouldnt it mean the game is like a drug? which means you want more and it doesnt matter who you are.

because frankly, im guessing its like 50% of the gamers who play wow who are addicted to it.

I find MMOs to be pretty boring compared to most games, specifically consoles. I don't like paying money to run around leveling up with no reward in the end. I just find it pathetic really.

I played for a long time, but really only because I wanted to. Recently, I've wanted to play, but just can't get hooked on it.

MMORPGs are all highly addictive. I'm a former Everquest and Final Fantasy 11 user, clean for going on 2 years now.

I've found free MMOs to be equally as addictive as ones that charge 15$ a month (WoW), but why must people play the more expensive when the same kind of gameplay experience is in store? (Speaking of Blizzard's major profit, they've just hit 8.5 mil players, have they not? It got me thinking... just how much money is Blizzard making a year? Try and multiply 8.5 million players times $180 a year for each player. (I'm not including cost of the game itself due to the cost of making the game itself) That's around 1.5 billion dollars a year!)
