I havent been a member on here long but ive checked out the site regularly to see the reviews and for a long time everything was cool and i could rely on gamespot to tell me what games suck and what games dont.

But for the past year it seems that the reviews are just getting ridiculous. It just seems ridiculous for someone to rate GTA4 a perfect game and then rate games lower that are actually a million times better.. how can fallout 3 be a 9?how is RE5 a 8.5? If your going on the basis that games should improve to get a good score then GTA should be a5.It has a ridiculous amount of detail and fun but yet a game so incredibly repetive as GTA4 gets the legendary perfect score? It seems that games who spend the most money on adverstising get the better scores nowadays...

another example is KZ2 which was all hype no show but still got a great rating. theres several other examples those are just recent ones.

I thought GTA deserved it's 10, many people don't though. The game was repetitive, but it had amazing characters, amazing dialogue, the missions we're fun, and the story was good, the graphics and physics were very well done too. Most games do get the score they rightfully deserve, but lately many games have flopped hard (Halo Wars, RE5, Madworld) all 3 of these are underrated by GS, MW is at least an 8, RE5 is a 9 and HW is an 8 also. GS can't always hit the mark with reviews, but they are mostly in the ball park, minus some famous blunders. After playing KZ2 I think it deserved it score, but I would also see an 8.5 being fair.

i agree with that mostly, but still dont think gta deserved a 10. possibly a 9. but it what game developers seem to be donig nowadays is overlooking the fun factor (which is the entire point of games) and going for the realistic art piece. It simply lacked the fun. About 15 (maybe less) weapons that got old incredibly fast, give me a freakin minigun and more less obvious gun choices!! seriously Deagle, AK47, and m16 are in every single game to existance and its getting sooo boring. the cell phone was cool...for the first few hours. like 10 dumb funless cheats. no awesome stats or dual wielding like in San Andreas. No Planes. No weight lifting. Sooo basically what you have left is a semi realistic game with 0 fun. Online play = worst idea ever.

so how does such a game get a perfect score? not sure..........

I have been playing games since the Atari 2600 come out. I then upgraded to an Amstrad 464, Amiga 512 (+512K memory upgrade) then onto my beloved PC. So I have been around a while and notive some changes in the types and styles of games that came out. Their are two problems with games today. The first problem is gamers, many gamers now are now casual and have attention span of a hyperactive kid having a major sugar rush. This is also one of the reasons why consoles are so popular, you just pop in your game you sit back and play and many are not difficult and about as brain taxing as falling asleep. So many games like GTA4 use cheap gimmiks and impressive graphics to sell there games. This has been something that has been creaping in ever since games started become so popular and the growth in the industry. Games like GTA4 fit well in the consumer society that we live in today. The Second problem is that of the games industry that is just really creating games along the lines of painting by numbers. They create games to entertain the masses and in doing so the game itself goes out the window, usually in favour of graphics and cheap gimmiks. My favourite games of all time include System Shock, System shock 2, Conflict Freespace 2, frontier : Elite 2 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Each one of those game through the creating by number book out the window and all brought something fresh to the industry. Although, the formats may not have been original, beach one fo those games had the care and attention to detail to creating something special and a a classic of all time. And seeing how many reviewers now (I know not all) were brought up in this creatively bland era of game creation , you will often see so called reveiwers (sometimes sympathetic to cause) giving something like GTA4 a 10/10. I wouldn't personally give GTA4 a score higher than 1.2 as it is so deviod of creativity, originately, challenge and character. It looks great, but thats about it, just like many other games on here that are reviewed on here. But then hey, that mdern times for you.

I believe it says Editor's Choice Also, a 10 on GS' rating scale is Prime. Perfect is only for user reviews. Stop rolling eyes now, k?

Taken from the rating scale: "10.0: Prime This exceedingly rare score refers to a game that is as perfect as a game can aspire to be at its time of release."

Judging by that definition, a 10 means perfect.

Nuh uh. It puts a condition on the "perfect," because perfect means there's no way for it to be improved now or ever. It's like a piece of beef that's USDA Prime. There's no such thing as a perfect steak, but anything rated Prime is going to be better than anything else out there that you can buy, aside from other steaks graded Prime (and even that comes down to preference, as there's different cuts like a filet, strip, ribeye...). Therefore, by giving GTAIV a Prime rating, it's saying that in regards to other games out there in the genre at the time it was released, any imperfection was negligible, and it should be the first choice you pick for a game of its type. Prime means best option... not Perfect.

I was pleasantly surprised with the 8.5 it gave Empire: Total War, they actually seemed to have played the game through. As for Resi 5, their score was pretty much in line with all the other reviews anywhere.

I remember being really surprised when Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction got a 7.5 . That still doesn't work out.

Grand Theft Auto 4 deserved its 10 in my opinion and Resident Evil probably deserved its 8.5. Fallout 3 maybe should have increased to 9.5 but i'm not sure.

It doesnt, under every 10 it says editors choice.

and right from the about gamespots rating system.

"10.0: Prime
This exceedingly rare score refers to a game that is as perfect as a game can aspire to be at its time of release. Obviously, the constantly changing standards for technology and gameplay will probably make this game obsolete some day, but at its time of release, a game earning this score could not have been improved upon in any meaningful way."

Please keep in mind these reviews are made by people, the scores reflect their opinion. Just because you disagree with a particular score does not mean that they are wrong in anyway. If you find the Gamespot reviews so disconcerting then I recommend using a different website for reviews; if no reviewer matches your opinion closely enough then you'll just have to live with it, there is no reason to complain about the reviews you disagree with.

After reading several GS reviews that simply had the wrong information or simply lied, I just laugh at the reviews now.
