I am NOT refering to difficulty, i am to the style, combat, etc.

@skaidus: Well Nioh is closer to Ninja Gaiden, so if anything I would recommend looking up Ninja Gaiden Black/ Sigma/ II.

The Surge seems decent. Nowhere near the level of amazingness that soulsborne games are, but it's sci-fi dark souls so it's fun.

Also Cuphead and Hollow Knight are some real gems in a similar vein to soulsborne but they are 2d indie games and Hollow Knight is also a metroidvania so depends on if u like that stuff.

Not really. . that's just referencing an outdated meme spread which was intended as a joke_

"______ is like dark souls"

I've seen it used for far too many games to be honest. It's getting a tad excessive.

Cuphead is like Contra.

Hollow Knight is basically Symphony of the Night.

Nothing like Dark Souls.

Now The Surge? Yes, they're the same people who made Lords of the Fallen, as close to Dark Soul clones as you can find.

Code Vein as @Ish_basic mentioned also looks to be fitting in as a kinda-Souls clone.

@RSM-HQ: wasn’t referencing a meme but ok, I’ll give you that Cuphead isn’t like dark souls, it’s just very hard and fun. Hollow Knight has the die twice and lose your ________ which is what dark souls has so I was just comparing it in that respect and I also said it was a metroidvania so I put more thought into it than just referencing a meme.

Salt and Sanctuary if you want a Castelvania meets Souls kind of game.

and my two cents - hated Lords of the Fallen - much more simplistic, level design is far below the Souls standard and combat seemed more irritating than rewarding. I say "seemed" because it's possible I just gave up on the game too quickly, but it just wasn't doing anything for me. Surge looks a lot better, but haven't played it yet.

Think it's always fantastic when someone else shows excitement for Monster Hunter: World. However a few key things to know about MH before the World beta goes live, case some are thinking it's simply Dark Souls with more color.

  • You don't level up in Monster Hunter games
  • Building armor, weapons, items for stacking abilities/ stats is Monster Hunters way of progression
  • Monster Hunter: World combat will have a mounting system similar to Shadow of the Colossus/ Dragon's Dogma
  • Being beaten once or twice isn't that big a deal in Monster Hunter, the overall party gets three chances in each assigned hunt
  • Coop isn't discouraged/ a second fiddle feature
  • If you played Dragons Dogma. Palicoes work a lot like Pawns, they won't do much in combat but will serve as decent distractions
  • When you hit G-Rank (if World will have G-Rank??) you'll notice a sharp difficulty spike that even puts Soul games to shame

May not have intended to be influenced by the overspread meme. Yet its come about one way or another, and made you see Cuphead as a Dark Souls-like game when it's nothing of the sort.

You could lose all your money in Shovel Knight as well but I don't know a single person who calls that a Dark Souls game. No, it was compared with Duck Tales and Mega Man respectfully.

If anything it just makes me scratch my head why everything has to be seen as a Dark Souls reference by the gaming community, and this is from someone who really likes the DkS games.

You'd be correct. Lords is meh.

@RSM-HQ: idk man, I think you're just nitpicking. There's a difference between copy/paste of soulsborne and similar vein with soulsborne, especially when I also compared hollow Knight to being a metroidvania. Some ppl will even get offended at that and say it's nothing like Metroid but u know what, when ppl say in a nutshell that ______ is like dark souls but with this and that, well theni think that's a good starting point of comparison.

An example, on the steam reviews for The Surge all one user had for his review was "it's like sci-fi dark souls". Now I'm sure someone could point out a number of reasons to contradict that statement, but as a starting point, sure, that's a fair thing to say.

The Surge does, indeed, look awesome, but that's pretty much the only good thing to say about it if you ask me. And Lords of the Fallen is, indeed, meh. They are both playable, mind you. Now, are they enjoyable? ... Not really, no... Have you played Dark Souls and/or Bloodborne?

@bobthehollow: It would be stupid if I asked about similar games to ones that I have not played, don't you think?

Hollow Knight being comparing to Metroid (Super Metroid to be exact) is a valid comparison. Metroidvania is the name of that sub-genre for good reason. And HK faithfully follows the formula with spades. Only Nintendo purists would get offended with comparing these games to Metroid series. Just like Owlboy and Guacamelee, they're all Metroidvania games.

And. . Well, The Surge is a heavily inspired Dark Souls game. Developer Deck13 has had tracing paper out for the last two games they've made, it's barely worth arguing over. Is that a bad thing? Depends on your point of view, many know From Software put a foot down after DkSIII, so many (including myself) settle for anything similar for an easy fix.

Cuphead and Hollow Knight however. As stated since my first reply are not Soul-like games. It's just a meme spread like Crash Bandicoot now being dubbed a Souls game in 2017 >_>

Sounded to me like this could've been your first foray into the genre. Sorry for trying to be helpful. Have fun.

Hyper Light Drifter has fighting mechanics inspired by Dark Souls. There's even less exposition, there aren't even any names for characters, items, abilities etc. On the other hand it does have an isometric view like the 2D Zelda games as well as pixel graphics like them. The art is amazing though, with neon colors and designs inspired by anime like Evangelion or Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.

Lords of the fallen is actually really good despite its mixed and some dodgey reviews.

However the combat is probably not what your looking for, really slow weighty and measured, were as nioh is quicker paced.
