Would you buy a good game even if you weren't a fan of the source material?

I remember back when buffy the vampire slayer came out on the xbox; I was definitely not a fan of the show, but it actually turned out to be a very well-done action game. On the other hand, let's say that 50 cent: Blood in the Sand turned out to have gameplay rivaling gears of war. Would you buy it? Even in the unlikely case that the game actually does turn out that good, I just don't know if I could bring myself to buy anything with 50 cent on the cover. You?

I hate soccer and tennis, but I enjoy the hell out of the Mario Strikers and Mario Tennis games.

I really depends. But I know I avoided some good games because I didn't like the source material.

I think a good game is a good game but even I might draw the line at 50 Cent, who is a complete assclown.

Sure, I have my own preferences in games and genres. I do read many reviews, but I don't let a reviewer influence my decision based on that game.

I'm not sure. My first thought was "Yes! Of course I would by a good game regardless of the source material." But now I'm not so sure. Wouldn't the source material, the brand, have an affect on my perception on the quality of the game? Would a 10 out of 10 rating really convince me that this Barbie in Paris game was worth buying? And if my perception is not affected, the game will be influenced and shaped by the franchise it is inspired by. This could be construed that, even if it is a good game, it may contain the elements of the franchise I disliked. If I happen to hate signing walruses, should I buy DDR: Walrus Idol because it is the difinitive DDR game? I'm not sure.

Wait a sec...this 50 cent game is a real game? I thought you were being hypothetical. Damn. The end of the world is a lot closer than I thought.

Oh yeah, my collection is full of games fitting that description. In some cases it makes me a fan of the source material (like Riddick). I dont keep tabs on pop-culture much at all so any game I own that is based on a license is basically bought on reputation or speculation.

No. Hell no. But I would buy a game with unusual characters, something I don't think I'd normally like, if I heard it was well-done, and interesting (a game outside of a genre I normally like, for instance).

But I'd have to agree with Grammaton above me, and give him props for the best use of the term "assclown" I've heard in a long time.

Well I was talking about games in which the source material was well known, like a popular movie franchise or tv show or famous person.

I know what you're talking about, and my answer is "no". I've played games with good gameplay, but horrible source material, and I just can't get into them. If there isn't a character I can relate to on some level, I'm out of the experience.

Probably not. Why play something with a theme that doesn't interest me at all? It's not like there's a shortage of great games that do appeal to me in every way.

If the game is good it can stand on its own merits. If its bad and uses the source material to draw in people and it sucks then hell no. If a game sucks then it sucks.

Yeah we are on the same wavelength with this one, I just don't see the point honestly. Once in a blue moon I will like with the Riddick game last gen but its very rare.

Definitely YES.

A good game is a good game, in it´s own.
