Either a remake or FFVII-2? I would buy one for either game, where otherwise I would never buy PS3. Funny, huh?
Anyone agree?
This topic is locked from further discussion.
i already own a PS3, but no, since I own FFVII. I might still buy it though.
FFXIIIon the other hand...
Squenix isn't what it was (they have lost much of the talent they had under their roof in the PS1/PS2 days) and given that the maker of FF12 left, the only really impressive Squenix games of late have been handled by Level 5 and Tri-Ace, but its possible they still have a talented designer or three. Nomura has done a good job with Kingdom Hearts. They are pretty shallow games, but they are partially Disney based, so expecting an ocean of depth wasn't realistic. It will be interesting to see if he (and, uh, the other guys making FF13s) can make more complex, demanding games.
If all of Squenix's next gen games fail on a game design level thus demonstrating that they are bereft of talent, I join those clamoring for remakes, but until that day comes, I hope for new games rather than rehashes and new characters rather than old ones. Fewer FF games would be nice as well.
Probably not, but if I hada PS3 I'd pick it up.
A remake of FFVII is not enough for me to pick up a PS3. I think FFXIII should be the game in question whether one would pick up a PS3 just for it. I wouldn't, but I think that's the Final Fantasy game most people are more anticipating right now. Honestly, I could care less for it though.
A game I would buy a PS3 for would be the next Chrono game IF it starred Kid again. That I'd pay $10,000 for the last PS3 on earth just to play it...if I had the money of course. :P

I agree. The guy who made FFXII, the Tactic games, and Vagrant Story was probably their best visionary. And Sakaguchi had a lot of influence too, as well as Uematsu. Normura is okay, but I don't consider him at the same level as Matsuno, as a game developer/director. Nomura is a amazing artist and great character designer, but I never considered him as a video game developer/director for some reason.
Kitase is probably the guy with the most pedigree at the moment since he was the original producer for FFVII and director. I think he wrote it too, correct me if I'm wrong. Still, FFVII came out at the right time and it was revolutionary. But his last few efforts have been unimpressive, especially FFVII: Dirge of Ridiculous.
There's a lot, and I mean, A LOT, riding on FFXIII. If this comes out unimpressive or doesn't push PS3 sales up the wall...than I feel Square-Enix will lose their impact in the industry. They'll still be big, but not as influential as before...even though I agree with Carnage that they lost their influence a long time ago, well, at least to me.
Oh well. At least they have Dragon Quest. They can makea brickwith the DQ logo and it will still sell like mad!
It depends on what the game is actually like. There has been so much disappointment in the FF games ever since X released(which was the last really fun FF imo), it's like they can't do it right anymore.
Personally I've been sick of FFVII since 1998, and I did love the game but I don't know if I'd care about a remake. If it was really good, and not some cheap gimick game then maybe.
I'm ready for a groundbreaking Final Fantasy that was as amazing and memorable as FFX and FFVII but NOT FFX and FFVII. New games, please.
no game I've ever played/seen validated buying an entirely new system. I am gettin a PS3 but because of what it can do and other games that it has.
As for the game. I wouldnt buy it. Already beat the 1st and it was good but not godly. Give me a remake of some Chrono Chross/Chrono Trigger and I'll buy though. I dont NEED it tho, I wont lose any sleep if they didnt remake it
I already have the console.
Honestly speaking, Square-Enix games are partly the reason I have it. The other being that I am a long time Sony fanboy :P

SE just continues to break my heart with burying treasured IPs when they're not destroying the ones that actually do get to see the light of day again, only to be tarnished. Tri-Ace's workmanship in particular, has suffered mightily under rule of SE. VP2, I concede was respectable, yet highly flawed.

You've got to be kidding, FF8 ruled but it hadn't got that special ingredient what FF7 has.

Are you kidding? you'd blow 500 bucks for one game??? You're nuts!

FFT didn't have nearly the across the board appeal of VII
FF VIII.

If that "special ingredient" is "not sucking", then I'm in complete agreement.
Square Enix needs to prove their product is worth my money before I ever play any of their games ever again. SE games ceased being "must haves" long ago.MarcusAntonius
...you know, your anti-S-E campaign is almost comical.
Almost.

And you're a marketing executive's dream, Fathoms. Just lap it up without asking questions, eh? Sorry, some of us are a bit more discriminating in our purchases. But then I glance at your avatar and remember your affiliation with a Sony dedicated website and then I realize it isn't even worth getting into it with you, that would be a waste of reason. And besides, you barely have the ability to keep up an exchange without gooning it up with insults.
By the way, how is your progress coming along on being able to engage other posters without resorting to personal attacks? At this rate, I'm sure your next suspension is just around the corner.
I definitely wouldn't buy a PS3 just for that. But since I already have one, if they came out with a remake I'd probably pick it up sooner or later. At the very least, it would get a rental.
Now, if they came out with a new Chrono game, THAT I would buy a PS3 for (if I didn't already have one). Or a remake of Xenogears. But alas, neither of those will ever happen. :(

It's not a personal attack, and you can check any one of the last dozen topics I've posted in (most notably, the Heavenly Sword and my own topic on length in games) to determine the answer to your your last insulting question.
I don't "lap up" anything, and I never have. You did nothing to defend yourself here, you simply turned around and insulted me, which isn't surprising. You have three posts in this same thread, doing everything you can to convince everybody that Square-Enix sucks. You do that every chance you get. Nobody said Final Fantasy XII sucked. Basically, only you. Nobody believed Kingdom Hearts 2 was terrible...but I'm guessing you did. Dragon Quest VIII was one of my favorite RPGs of the last generation, but I must've just been "lapping" at the time. Valkyrie Profile 2, to which you condescended to give even the tiniest bit of credit, was received extraordinarily well by critics everywhere.
As for what I do, you may also notice I'm EIC of our sister site as well (Xbox Nerds), but than again, you're not interested in facts. And neither job holds any sway over what games I like or play. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I know your kind. The RPG elitist kind that basically says all mainstream RPGs are crap, and only YOU know what's good. Which of course means Square-Enix is just catering to the casual novice RPG player, which of course, you are not. Well, I can pretty much guarantee I've played just as many RPGs in the past 17 years as you, if not more. And I don't appreciate the constant bashing S-E gets from you...few REAL RPG fans do.

I'm with Marcus in this one. Squenix are milking their classic titles and even starting to risk the only winning card they have which is FF. When they made FF12 they hired a dummy team who only had two games in their record and the result was astonishing considering the game being a huge disapointment. And no I'm not talkling about the battle system and the new direction of FF because it was the best thing about FF12, I'm talking about the story. The games you've mentioned were tri-aces and enix. And final fantasy 13 WON'T do well if it has the same storyline or wooden characters of FF12 mark my words. another thing about Square enix that they're releasing nothing but spin-offs and about who? Zack? who only appread in the original game for five minutes? And Vincent who you could easily skip if you don't know the right numbers for the safe. I've told this to someone on ps2 boards and most of use agreed that ff12 was a let down story and presentation wise not gameplay wise.

If you didn't intend for it to come off as an insult and more of just taking issue with a comment, fine, then I will believe you. But to call me an RPG elitest? Hardly. If I were, I certainly wouldn't be so enthusiastic to tell other gamers about some worthy alternitives to the more mainstream titles so that perhaps more niche titles like them can get more exposure and be released in the U.S. whenever the genre comes up for discussion. An "elitest" wouldn't want such games to get exposure so that they wouldn't be "cool" anymore.
Where did I try to convince people that SE "sucks?" I simply believe that they're just not the only game in town anymore when it comes to RPGs, that's all. They don't dominate the scene as much as they once did and I've questioned their direction and decision making, as any consumer would.
Is there really anything wrong with questioning SE? Are you going to honestly, wholeheartedly deny that their quality hasn't slipped from last gen? They are clearly not the same company as they were in the 32-bit gen, that much is unquestionable IMO. I'm far from the only regular in GGD who holds such sentiments.
Yes, I realize that VP2 was a good game, I enjoyed it, but that doesn't mean the game wasn't flawed in significant ways. Go no further than the review here at good ol' GS. Those of us who played the first game surely have a point of reference to make the comparisons.
How could I say that FF XII "sucked?" I've never said that, ever. Nor have I implied it. Where have I ever said that, Fathoms?
SE looks like they might be finally getting things back in order, but where is the fault in taking a wait and see approach?

It is rather unfair to be too harsh on Final Fantasy XII.
The story was there, it was grand and epic story that was just never allowed to be materialized due to time constraint and because the original creator of the game and story, Yasumi Matsuno had to leave in the middle of the project.
From there on, rest of the team sort of had to just wrap it up so they can sell the game because the game already had huge amount of money invested on.
It is a shame. So much of the story had to be cut out with simple narration, and many of the fine details of the game was cut out, leaving the character progression rather empty and many of the delicate story details of political situation of the Final Fantasy XII, etc was left out.
Final Fantasy XII was simply too large of project and idea to be made into a single game. If they simply divided into perhaps a triology, the game would've turned out better.
