Hey, I've never really understood, and I'm sure it'll have something to do with technical limitations of online play etc, but why hasn't there been a World of Warcraft type MMO for a console? (if there has, please spill) For example, Oblivion i hated, simply because you wander around the world without meeting any real people, imagine if it was a joinable world? Similarly, PlanetSide is a PC game I play where you join a planet and there are hundreds if not thousands of players online, all fighting and joining clans, there doesn't seem to be a console game on similar epic scales? Your thoughts?

Everything is better on a computer. Much better parts in everyway, better internet connection (Probably), you can add mods (Downloadable stuff) easier than on a console, and easier controls (by far). Try to picture playing WoW with a console controller, it would never work.

Edit: Also, it would sell more because...who doesn't have a computer these days?

They were going to bring Star Wars Galaxies to the Xbox for Live but it never came to fruition. I'm guessing because there is just less of demand for MMORPG's on consoles and it isn't worth the cost to the developer. Also not sure how well the technical side would hold up in a console version. It would have happened by now, if it's ever going to happen it will be when the next WoW standalone will be released. I seriously have doubts though.

Look at the interface on World of Warcraft. There aren't enough buttons on a controller to handle all the things you need to click in combat.

For one, Blizzard has such a huge install base on the PC, it's not worth going through the work to put the game on consoles just to get a few more subscribers. WoW isn't a hardware demanding game, so most people who have 360's already has computers that can play WoW. Second, you gotta think about the addons. How are you going to get third party addons for WoW when everyone would have to go through the bureaucracy of Xbox Live. Third, Xbox Live party chat is far inferior to Vent. With Vent you can have multiple channels, and a lot more people in each channel, than you can in party chat. WoW is just as much a social game, as it is a core game. So people are going to want to be able to join their guild vent and start chatting. Instead of having to wait to be invited, and then messaging people left and right to get everyone in the same chat. And Forth, You have the whole mice and keyboard debacle.

A couple of things:

  1. Planetside rocks
  2. a large portion of the MMO appeal is the social aspect, for which you need a keyboard. There hasn't been a good keyboard made/implemented on consoles when contrasted with a PC
  3. One third of the consoles use a friend code, one third already charges extra for online play, and only the last third is less stringent
  4. Check out Final Fantasy on the 360

I don't see WOW coming to a game console. The only MMO on a console that I know of is Final Fantasy XI on the 360 and PS2,and Everquest for the PS2.
