"Installing World of Warcraft entails taking four nicely packaged CDs and putting up with an install time bordering the countries of "absurd" and "offensive." This is, of course, absolute gibberish to anyone who instead purchased the Collector's Editions of the game and subsequent expansion. In those, the game content comes on both CD and DVD formats.

According to a moderator post on the official WOW forums (via WoW Insider), Wrath of the Lich King, the game's latest expansion, will only ship in the DVD format. Anyone without a capable computer will have to either upgrade or wait for the content to be released in digital form. And a warning: If you want to play the expansion on launch day, don't take the latter route. The Burning Crusade wasn't released digitally until a few weeks after the retail version.

While it seems like most people would have a DVD drive on their computer by now, WOW reaches a pretty vast audience, including a lot of players who don't use their computer for gaming (or much else) beyond Warcraft. Do you think the switch to the newer format will have any effect on the game's sales, or is it too late in the life of the CD for this to even matter?"

It's hard to say. I wouldn't say it was a BAD idea necessarily, nor a good one. I do think it will hurt sales a bit, but a company like Blizzard will bounce back I'm sure haha. I just don't think it makes much sense. Why couldn't they just do CD and DVD? I understand that costs a lot more money to make obviously, but like I said, it's Blizzard, it's not like they can't afford it.

i think the only problem here is that they won't have digital downloads on day 1. They should be preloading the game before release for anyone who wants or needs to download it.

It's a great idea. Any computer that can play WoW should already have a DVD drive - I think I've had a DVD drive of some sort in my computer since 2000 or 2001 and neither of those were capable of running WoW.

CDs should have been phased out years ago. There's nothing worse than sitting through a lengthy installation just because you have to change discs every five minutes. I have a hard time going back to certain games because the urge to play them is calmed somewhat by knowing I'll have to spend 15 or 20 minutes juggling discs.
