For those that didn't know this already, you need internet for your Xbox One to work. I still think it's stupid, they should just have given you a disc to install everything on and you are good to go. It's also confirmed by Penello

Yeah, it sucks, so people should be informed on this

i don't think a one time activation is that big of a deal (assuming that, you know, it works), but i could understand if the few people who don't have an internet connection were upset. hopefully there is some sort of tag on the box to inform people.

any retailer who wants to sell it bad enough will have an area set up where they can install the day one patch and then repack the system for the buyer.

Yeah and those people don't have the internet wont be able to know this information like us because they cant read it online. I bet this might frustrate some people when they take home their xbox and realize they cant update it to play it.

This concern was mentioned others and I when the day one patch for the Microsoft Xbox One was first reported, but I have yet to read or hear about about a solution for it. My guess is if MS keeps the current policies forever then there will inevitably be a second version of the Xbox One with the patch pre-installed.

Sony and MS are simply ruining the user experience with garbage like this. This sort of crap is rather anti-climatic when purchasing a new console. You want to be able to connect, insert disc and play. Now you have to wait 15-20 minutes before you can play the game. Also you have to hope that there isn't a patch for the game that is needed for the game to work. I think its pretty clear that both systems are simply not ready for retail.

And you might have to install the first game you want to play. For some people, the process will be:

Unwrap, plug, turn on, run the setup wizard, download/install patch, insert disc, install first game, patch first game.... play?

@Pedro:

The PS4 needs a 300 MB patch to go online, but one can play games offline while it downloads.

PS4 games install as you play. or at least thats how it works with KZ. The first time you boot up the game, the game takes 2.5 minutes to load and put you in game. Which is not bad at all. Every subsequent load is only 15 seconds from XMB to game. That's pretty amazing to me.

Not sure about X1, but PS4 supports game downloading while you play. You should be able to play your games while the 300MB update downloads in the background. You should also be able to play games if there is a Day 1 patch for it while it downloads in the background.

They have done a lot to make this process faster. Let's give credit where it's due.

As far as I know you're forced to have Xbox Live in order to even download the patch.

This completely throws long term security of your console right out the window. The moment your console bricks after the servers are down even a new one most likely won't help you. Toss out/Sell the games and start again.

I refuse to buy an Xbox One due to their BS, this is bad enough but they are also releasing Forza 5 unfinished and players will not even be able to complete the game without the patch. Sickening.

That's nothing compared to Windows ME. At least Vista and 8 eventually got fixed. ME was an unstable piece of garbage from its release to its death.

Quite franlky, even though it´s about diferent features there´s a significant number of functionalities that won´t be available on the PS4 day one if you don´t connect to the internet and activate them, and if you dont have net then you can´t acess them, ever.

This one is worse though, but both have issues with online functionalities on launch.

I think maybe Microsoft's reasoning is that if you can afford the Xbone, you can afford internet.

At any rate, if you don't have or can't get internet, I guess you just go with the PS4.

Not true. When you boot up the system you are prompted to connect to your home internet immediately, and immediately download the patch. You are not first asked to sign into a XBL account, that comes after you download the patch and set up Kinect.

Or to quote Don Mattrick "We have a product for people who can't get online, it's called the Xbox 360."

If someone doesn't have an internet connection that's nobody's fault but your own. I think in this day an age, if you don't have a high speed internet connection, you should just stick with old consoles or don't even buy a new console. Seriously, high speed has been around long enough.

Really? You're going to go there? You know not everyone has reliable internet. Not everyone even has internet where they live. Because of that you make this ignorant statement? Consoles have ALWAYS been able to play games with or without internet and it shouldn't change at all. JEEZ. I thought people realized this after X1 tried to do DRM and used games blockage in May... Jeez...

True, or a smart phone. I finally got a used one a few months ago. Expecting everyone to have one is stupid in my book

Not everybody in the U.S.A have internet..M$ just want the xbone to die..i bet you everything their planning to do it sooner or later..I feel bad for the consumers who dont know any of this shit..they will take it home and realize they need internet ..Majority of the people just want to play their games without going online ..I always bring my console to my friend house or when i travel ..It sucks you cant just plug it and just play ....Thank God for Sony...I hope the PS4 destroys the xbone so M$ can wake up..I want competition so Sony will not slack off..

Is there such a thing as people without any access to the the internet what so ever? who also can afford 500$ for a console?

But dont see a problem and i am betting that most stores would be more than happy to help out with the update if someone really didn´t have any access at all.

lots of people have slow internet, few hundred megs can take hours on slow internet. its easy to say that having to download a patch isnt a big deal, but it is if your in an area where internet is terrible
