When I hear somebody say something along these lines, "The PSOne is pretty good but the graphics for the games suck.". That irritates me to no end. Do non-gamers and young gamers just not realize that these older games were top-notch when they were released? It's not like Konami released Metal Gear Solid on the PSOne with awful graphics. It was one of the best looking games available on the platform and frankly was one of the best looking games of it's time. The same can be said about even older systems such as the NES when kids are like "Why were the graphics so bad?". It just really makes me feel sorry for new generations of gamers that have no real appreciation for video games because they've grown up hearing "Next-Gen" this and "Next-Gen" that and High Definition (blah, blah, blah).

I'm not saying ALL younger gamers and new comers are like this but a large majority are. One of my friends for example is 17 and he's a PC Gamer and will never touch any game that is older than this generation because he can't stand to see "pixels", "jaggies", "low res textures", and the list goes on and on... I've gotten in so many arguements with this kid it's not even funny.I even heard this one guy say (and I swear to god) "I would play the PSOne if they made the graphics better".... lol.

Ugh. I can't stand people who are obsessed with just the graphics of a game. I've heard people say that PS2 is old and such. I'm like O.O

Most of these new games may have good graphics but the storylines aren't in comparison to PS2, N64, PS1, etc.

I couldn't agree with you more. I mean how hard is it to pretend, just pretend that you're back around the time of original playstation launch seeing these graphics for the first time? To be honest, I for one would prefer to play an old gen game with running in 60 fps than a current gen game at 30 fps.

I agree with you. There is so much frustration everytime I'm on the Metal Gear forums and someone complains about graphics. If the gameplay can endure the test of time, that is all that matters.

Well, it's natural to compare everything to the best looking games available. But some people are just plain idiots. I recommend you avoid these people.

yup, it is pretty silly to hear that. graphics aren't even THAT important, compared to every other aspect of a game IMO.

Same here. The graphics still manage to look realistic (in terms of what the system could pull off). But some games simply haven't aged well graphically, like FF7 (why were the field models different from the battle models? URGH!!!).

We could over-complicate the discussion, or we could come to terms with how obtuse most people are. Status symbols and marketing campaigns (and a hefty dose of bad taste) makes an idiot go wild. One day, someone will say the same thing to him about Crysis, and then he'll remember his adolescence with blissful nostalgia.

I could list off a ton of things related to this, but for now, I'll just share with you guys just one thing.

Well, to me it's pretty shocking, it sounds wierd, but here it is.
Some kid actually came into my work and said that he 'remembered where he left his games for his dreamcast. Man, that this is RETRO!'

I shudder everytime I think about it. There were so many things that I could say and not even in a way to insult the kid. I mean, what do you think about when someone says retro? I think about anything NES and back, hell, even super nintendo can fit into there simply because it has a ton of C-word games.

What do you guys think about it?

Well lets face it, many gamers now have only started gaming with the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube generation so anything before that really is retro to them. Gamers who played the older stuff can appreciate aspects other than graphics more than the newer generation.

I played MGS a few weeks ago for the first time and thought "Holy hell, voice acting and good graphics back in the day? Awesome!" I consider myself lucky to have played on the majority of consoles that have been released, makes you appreciate how things have changed to the better or worse.

i have to start by saying i don't fully understand the tech about new games or the consoles i just know what i like:D

but i gotta say that i have spent more then a few dollars lately on games that just don't seem to be as much fun they don't seem to grab and hold your attention like they used to i mean don't get me wrong some do, but i remember when zelda a link to the past came out on the snes and i just could not stop playing, now i have heard young kids (my nieces and nephews) say that the graphics were crap and the game sucked.

i try to get them more into the old games but they just sniff at them and go back to there nintendo ds games or go on about how the 360 is way better again i agree that the new consoles do have some excellent games but I'm not sure that alot of these games will be talked about in ten years time

well thats my old man rant i hope it confused you immensely

LONG LIVE THE CLASSICS:D

i know what you mean, because i used to be exactly like that. i used to be a PC gamer and most pc gamers are like that, i didnt care about the gameplay all i wanted was to play the latest graphics available, until by complete casuality i got to Final Fantasy VII on the PC version about one year ago. when i saw the more than 10 year old graphics i said "im not gonna play this crap for more that 10 minutes" but for some reason i continue playing and got addicted.

then i decided t buy a PS2 (which has lower graphic capacity than the pc i had) in order to play other similar games (FFX, Dragon Quest VIII, etc), and since then i now learned to appreciate games for their gameplay and storyline other than the graphics.

now i got an even more powerful pc, but i just cant find the fun in FPS PC games anymore and graphics don't obsess me anymore, so currently i spend my time playing FFIV, a game that is from 1991 in the PS1 remake and i find more fun than Farcry or Bioshock

I personally think that the 'pixels' and 'jaggies' MAKE the game awesome. I dont think I can imagine the classic Super Mario Brothers in 3D. It just wouldn't look right to me. I like the graphics no matter what. People who talk like "nyahh! I hate bad graphics!" should get their fingers burned so they won't touch another controller for a long time!

When I was in a gamestop, these two middle school kids called the Xbox "Old School". I'm 24, grew up on the NES since 1988 and been gaming ever since. the Xbox is not old school. How can a system with online multiplayer be old school? Old school is turning your TV to channel 3, blowing on the dusty connecters, etc....

I totally agree! Hell, to my knowledge it wasn't that good, but even the dreamcast had online. I think the term old-school is used too much for everything nowadays. I've been a gamer since 1990, and with all the new stuff and all these kids coming into my store running their moths off about all the stuff that this console doesn't have and all these firmware upgrades to our consoles, I feel really old. Hell, I'm barely even considered an adult, and I feel ancient. It isn't right!

It really is SAD. I am 15, but I have a Genesis and a ps1, and I have to say especially in the ps1's case, that it had a bunch of games that are/were better than most PS3 games....it really makes me worried in sony, it is like they just forgot how to make good games...and started making playable movies (ONE FRIGGIN RPG that is first party.....) Sony, if it took a look back to the past, it would mabey realize that they do know how to make some epic games...they just need to do it (Dark Cloud 3, White Knight Story, Legend of Dragoon 2, GT5, Syphon Filter, Jet Moto, a Twisted Metal game, and Amplitude)--Could take Sony back to the Top of gaming, and help them beat M$, but Sony sees M$ make some shooters and they See Nintendo releasing their entire back catalog of games and all sony does is copy....and a copy is never as good as the original

You know, after all this talk, I've decided that whenever I have a kid (not anytime soon hopefully) I'm gonna start them off playing an NES if they ever ask to play a game. I would say atari, but the NES has so many classics that I can relate to as well and also play them. I've thought this for a while, but you could be any age and not appreciate the fun factor in games.

I agree with what you said TC. The people who are stupid enough to make fun of graphics back then seem to start gaming when the 360 came out (2005?). So just ignore them. Besides, most of the classics are much better than what we have today.

That reminds me when I was buying a game at EB Games (Gamestop to others, I believe.) I was waiting in line, and these two kids were behind me. Now I'm not that old, only fifteen however I started gaming with the Super Nintendo, went back to the Nintendo, played the Sega, and so on, and with my liking of "simple times" I have a certain love and connection to those systems and games. I overheard the kids talking who were probably about eleven each, and one of them picked up a Super Mario 64 box, and I couldn't believe what he said "I'd never play this game, the graphics suck". It just bugs me that a lot of people now adays are rating past games by graphics.

I mean, I haven't developed a connection to a single new game (not saying the new games are complete garbage), but I still remember playing Sonic & Knuckles, Super Mario World, Banjo Tooie (which is not THAT old), and so on.

The under-appreciation for older systems is one of the few things that can really annoy me. But that's my two-cents.

Sadly it is a graphics gaming world. If you put some of todays top storyline games out with subpar graphics, everyone would say it sucked. Now I'm not saying that graphics aren't important because they do add to the game, but gamers need to be aware of the time of release for the game they are playing ...

Honestly, I think if you're worried about this you need to get out more. Obviously, people who grew up with later systems will have a hard time going back to a generation before their time and playing games they've never seen before, in a low graphical quality they've never experienced. It won't be the same for them, because the entire experience will be different.

I've only played one game where the poor graphics became a genuine nuisance, and that was Final Fantasy 7. I never truely enjoyed that game for multiple reasons, but the way the areas were designed, and how muddled they were... ugh. I had no idea what was what.

This is all so true, hell just yesterday I went in to GameCrazy to buy a GAMECUBE game (Viewtiful Joe 2), and the clerk had no idea what it was. The other guy working there kept saying it is a gamecube game right over there, and he still had no idea until he saw the game. His comment when he picked it up: "Wow, games had really weird names back in the day." ... back in the day? I am 17 and grew up playing the NES because my parents bought it at a yard sale and never got to play any other console until a year after the N64 came out and have been gaming since. People really need to respect legacy games because without them, we wouldn't even have the games we have today.

Luckily i've turned my 10 year old nephew into someone who appreciates the retro games. When he was about 6-7 I sat down with my nephew for one weekend and played the SNES with him games like Megaman X, Megaman X2, Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart and Star Fox. So now hes loves these types of games...

All you have to do is show the new generation of gamers how awesome the some of the older games were.

I dont mind bad or dated graphics, as long as it doesn`t get in the way of gameplay, like enemies blending into the backround or choppy animation.
