Accolade: The Test Drive and Star Control series were a blast to play. Many good times with them. Sierra: The kings of Adventure games, which then proceeded to become the Grim Reaper and then Killed Adventure games, and then came back as a mediocre developer before being destroyed by Activision. Midway games: They had many great games and new ideas, but they were only shown by from the Media for only a couple franchises. So in turn many great games with bad sales killed poor Midway. SSI: One of the top 3 best developers of old school RPGS. Going for almost all themes, and types like FP, Action, Strategy, etc. Origin Systems: One of the great RPG makers. Even made Rpgs without actual violence and battles. Sir Tech: Another great Rpg Maker Seta: Had a few great games. There were delays, but they made sure fire hits. Psygnosis One of the devs where the full buy out killed the company and their creativity. Made some stellar games with unique ideas almost all the time. Epyx: One of the greatest game studios. Was a computer and Atari Lynx dev primarily. Some great gems. Crave Entertainment: Was an all risk company. The published and made all kinds of games that were unique all the time. So it was always hit or miss, but you would always get something new and fresh. Hudsonsoft: Bomberman, Legendary Axe, responsible for a nice portion of the TG-16 library.

Lucasarts , Sierra, Westwood, Interplay (the old one) , Midway and quite a few others.

Squaresoft would have made the list , but they aren't really gone per se . they merged with Enix.

Rare is not really defunct, but they're really not developing like they did on N64, and their buyout crushed the dreams of many.

R.I.P. Rareware

Rare.  Most of their talented people quit when Microsoft acquired it.

Rareware (note that Rareware =/= Rare of today), Shiny Entertainment (made legendary games like Earthworm Jim, MDK, Sacrifice, Messiah, ect.), Bullfrog Productions (Dungeon Keeper, Magic Carpet, Syndicate, Theme Hospital, Populous, Hi-Octane, ect.), Origin Systems (Ultima series, Wing Commander series, Crusader series, BioForge, ect.), Lucas Arts (X-Wing series, Rogue Squadron series, Jedi Knight series, Monkey Island series, ect.), Looking Glass Studios (System Shock, Flight Unlimited, Thief, Ultima Underworld, ect.), ect.

These companies made really good games but are no longer with us or are different companies now.

I don't think of them because most of their games I played after they disbanded. I just played Dungeon Keeper. Magic Carpet 1, Syndicate, and Theme Hospital in the last few years.

I still have Dungeon Keeper 2, Magic Carpet 2, Populous: The Beginning and Syndicate Wars to play that I got for sale from GOG.

I played Theme Hospital and Populous: The Beginning around 2001, I think they were still around at that time. Haven't played any other games from them though, but I loved those two.

They aren't defunct, the studio had a name change to Crytek USA, but the brand is still free radical for the pubishing label.

A few years ago, I'd have said Microprose hands down, but after the X-Com reboot (which was good), I'm only left with Master of Orion and Master of Magic.  Actually, I guess I'd still say Microprose.

Sierra-The brains behind Ground Control and my fav classic Pharaoh.

Westwood:The Markers behind RTS. And  Command & Conquer.

lucasarts: Did i forget to mention how i hate EA games for getting the Star Wars license? they would just ruin everything as they did with Sim City.

Rareware (obviously), Sierra, Free Radical, and Troika Games. Troika is the studio that created Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines. Bloodlines is one of the greatest games I have ever played.

Rare is still alive people. I miss companies like Sierra, Cyber Dreams, Midway, Interplay Studios not to be confused with interplay entertainment, SNK (not playmore) who used to bring all kinds of new ideas to the table. Sonic Team USA for the best Sonic games, Enix and Tengen were also really great, Flying edge brought some of the best arcade style games, there's too many. Funny thing about that is most of the defunct game companies became defunct from 2005 until now,

Good call on Troika, I really liked Arcanum and Bloodlines. I haven't played Temple of Elemental Evil but got it in the D&D bundle from GOG so I'll get to it eventually.

SingleTrac. They made some of my favorite PlayStation games. Eat, Sleep, Play have a majority of the employees. My hope is they'll go back and do a more traditional Twisted Metal again, like a sequel to Head-On.

Squaresoft and Enix: both these companies died as far as I am concerned when they merged. 90% of their games when they were seperate companies were pure gold, however 90% of the games they have released as Squarenix have been garbage.

Eurocom. Their quality was jumpy, I'll admit, but they knew how to make good games when they made it.

Also add: Midway.

I think 90% of their games being garbage is a stretch but I do agree they haven't been so great lately.

THQ.

Simply for the fact that i'm a Wrestling game fan, and they had a great run with it. But at the same time, i can't wait to see what 2K does with the WWE Series. Would have loved for THQ to try their hand at a TNA Game, but now we'll never know.

Hopefully someone tries a different approach than the first TNA Game, but now i'm getting off topic...lol

I actually have yet to play MUSHA. I actually just looked them up on Mobygames - I didn't realize their catalogue was so diverse! I just thought they did a few vertically scrolling shooters.

Enix was always releasing or publishing original games with odd styles or unique gameplay all the time. It was an adventure in every box.

I've got mixed feelings about the whole thing, but I am mostly not as upset as everyone else. I generally think the former Enix franchises I have played (under the Square-Enix lable) are still great, but like a lot of people, I miss the Sakaguchi Final Fantasy days. On that same note I liked FF12 and Dirge of Cerberus a good deal, and I wonder how prolific Tri-Ace would have been under the Enix only lable.
