Greetings dudes and dudettes of internets. tldr; yo

I'll cut the chase and just ask, what type of an adventure game would you prefer? I am not looking answers such as certain adventure game's name or maker but interested of hearing what type of qualities make a good adventure game in your opinion? Is it the puzzles? Storyline? Graphics? Something else maybe?

So if it was up to you, what would adventure game of your dreams be like?

One that is challenging and stimulating, without bizarre solutions. An original storyline is a huge plus. Depending on the objective of the game, graphics may or may not be vital. I do like games that involve dialogue as part of the means of solution. However, dialogues are often lacking and seldom present real challenges to conduct. One thing that I have yet to see in an adventure game is more than one way to solve a problem, etc.

A good indication is what games you go back and replay. I'm almost done with probably my 4th playthrough of PS1 Tomb Raider 1, as well as 2 and 3. Demon's Souls and Dark souls I will play again many times, can't wait for Dark Souls 2. I am part way through my 3rd play of Fallout 3. I replay the PS1 Kings Field series occasionally. The before last Final Fantasy is one I will replay, the last one sucked. Most of the Resident Evil's I will replay. King's Field: the Ancient City for the PS2 is one I replay every couple years. Oblivion is another, not sure if I'll play Skyrim again. Borderlands 1 and 2.

I like my adventure games to be games that are long, have good stories and really cool puzzles. I'm playing Brothers at the moment and I guess its not an adventure game per se but it's really good. Pure adventure games tend to apply absolutely insane logic. I love it.

I'd say:

- Sense of mystery.

- Immersion/ambience.

- Revelations/discovery.

- So-so complex logical puzzles that are physically relevant and make sense.

- Beautiful scenery.

- Sense of progress and achievement.

I don't like:

- Attempts to comedy. That grows stale pretty quickly.

- Too much reading. Especially if puzzles are based on what I didn't read.

Examples of great adventure games (in the more traditional sense and of course in my opinion): Zork Nemesis, Myst 1/3/4 (mainly), Syberia 1/2, Amerzone, The Longest Journey 1/2, Penumbra 1/2/3, Portal 1/2 (puzzle more than adventure), Journeyman 1/2/3, Sanitarium, The Neverhood, Amnesia, Bad Mojo, Zork Grand Inquisitor, Broken Sword Sleeping Dragon

Again? You completed every quest in Skyrim and FAllout 3? Or did you just meant the main questline?

I was always drawn in by story and character. That actually kind of transcends for me into any game, but particularly with adventure, I like to feel addicted to the journey and the storyline, I want to not be able to put it down, like a good book! I can't stand obscure 'busy-work' puzzles, where problem leads to problem leads to problem. For instance, you need to open this door, but the key is missing. You find the key, but it's broken. You go to the key-maker to get the key fixed but the key-maker has had all his equipment stolen- see where I'm going with this? I reckon a well thought out, well plotted, compelling and stimulating game won't need to take cheap shots at the player like that. So for me the best things are a complex and involving storylines, characters I care for, diverse and unrepetitive gameplay, and a good scare here and there. Top marks then for Dreamfall, Titanic, Adventure out of Time and Grim Fandango.

jak and daxter the precursor legacy was probably the greatest adventure game ive ever played. it would be cool to have something like that mixed with the leveling up and skills setup of skyrim or fallout.

My favourite adventure games are the prince of persia games. I also liked darksiders 1 and 2 and the latest tomb raider. The story line of an adventure game should be perfect to fit its style. The graphics must be good and there should be tricky puzzles which could be easily understood with paying a little concentration. There should also be combats and acrobatics in it. It will be more interesting if the combat is mostly melee based.
