Your jump from 2D to 3D

For those of you who were born in the 2D era: do you remember the moment when you've first experienced 3D games? Can you describe the feeling?

Dude, I was at a friend's home and he booted the Jedi Knight demo on his 486 computer. Yeah, it was in 320x200 and there was barely any sound... but I remember it felt amazing playing that! All I had was a Super Nintendo! And I hadn't even seen Starwing yet! Can you imagine the difference?

I don't know if it's the 3D or the fact it was star wars or if it's because I was playing it with a dear friend of mine that I've lost... but that feeling is one of the things I'll never ever forget.

playing mario 64 for the first time was as close to an orgasm as i could get back then.

I was very unimpressed with 3D games in the eary days (PS1 era). It took quite a while for 3D gaming to approach the level of graphical quality found in 2D games. I didn't really play any 3D games until around 2001 or so.

Since then I've gone back to play some 3D games I missed, like Final Fantasy VII...but man, they look SO bad.

Like many have said Super mario 64. I completely floored me. The controls were spot on, the level design was great, camera controls were good. It was just a completely new experience.

For me, making a jump from 2D to the 3D world start with Mario 64. Making that jump was not easy at first because of the controls and the fact that you needed to adjust the camera. In 3D games I didn't get the sense of speed like in the 2D games but during times like when I would fall, that was the first time that a game gave me a sense of falling with it. And the ability to perform different moves with different button combinations kept me playing 3D games.

Virtua Fighter

It came out when I was playing lots of fighting games in arcades (basically Street Fighter 2) and to me it was so amazing.

I was a fan of Sega mostly because they tried lots of odd new things. I liked many of their not very good games because it was something new but this game made me a fan of Virtua Fighter even after Tekken (more Tekken 2) came out and tried to out do what Sega had done before.

Then Virtua Fighter 2 came out and did something I didn't think was possible in my lifetime.

Good question. In truth it was probably Doom but the first 3D "wow" moment was probably the first Tomb Raider. Running around the caves and knowing that those platforms and walls around me weren't just there as scenery or to keep me on the path but were actually part of the level itself.

Although a bit rough around the edges, that game had a great sense of scale and I feel it is very underrated and influential.-INKling-

Same. It's still one of my favourite games of all times :) It's no doubt underrated.

for me it was mario 64 and final fantasy 7 at around the same time.

FF7 had a bigger impact on me though because it was the first non kiddy, adult-themed game i played adn remains to this day my favorite game ever

AS a younger I loved my Sega. I had all the Sonic games, and even Sega channle. When they first released Sonic 3D I was all over it, and was completely amazed. Not only that, but after that day, my head began to spin with all the possiblities of 3D games.

It was quite the day, but, I must say that it was not as intense as the first time I played GTA3 in comparison to GTA1 and 2. When that game whent to 3D, my head exploded, making it very difficult to continue playing.

I hated it.

I was always running into walls and stuff.

I got used to it after a while though.

Same here.Going from Super Mario World to Super Mario 64 blew my mind.
