By this I mean a game you didnt expect much from, but turned out to be really really good.

Ive started playing DE:HR and its the winner for me, the game is excellent, and I didnt expect much from it.

Its like MGS without the convoluted plot line mixed with blade runner. Its just a shame you cant hide in the lockers lol.

So far though, this game is impressive, and anyone that like me didnt bother at release should try it out. I got the LE game brand new for 9.99 from gamestation, a steal for sure.

So what impressed you this year that you thought would be meh?

The Old Republic was given to me as a gift, I tend to hate MMOs, but both my fiancee and I are thoroughly enjoying it despite disliking Star Wars.

Mine was probably Shogun 2 because I don't usually click with strategy games but this seems to be the one that got me hooked :). I enjoyed KZ3 too which was a surprise because everybody says its rubbish.

For me I suppose its Saints Row: The third.

Reason is simple, I tended to hate the GTA games after Vice city, The assinine characters, and the incresingly boring plot. Now here is where it gets interresting... I really disliked saints row for the same reasons, I do not connect with the kind of people they try to portray. And the previous SR games felt too much like GTA.

I bought SR3 dur to the small hope the the trailers for the game illustrated the actual game. And MAN was I happy with what I saw :D

Over the top insanity, more cartoony and an almost corperate feel of the groups. A game that was made purely for the sake of being funny, and characters that could have been taken out of a comic book instead of a stereotype of the things you step on when you take a walk.

I even bought the season pass after finishing the game ^^ I think the secret savior to the series has to be the controles, its kinda fun, since it techincally controls somewhat like SR2, but it just feels right this time.

Pushmo. I was amazed by how simple it is, yet there's a lot you can do with it.

- The Old Republic - Usually hate mmos *besides Ultima Online*, I was also worried about KOTOR going into MMO genre, but this game is amazing, its like 10-15 KOTOR singleplayer games, just you can do it in coop with others if you want. I thought it would suck horribly but its awesome! Bioware is back!

- Terraria - Was not expecting much from this game but I already have 100+ hours spent on it.

- Dungeon Defenders

- To The Moon

The most surpisingly good games for me were Rayman Origins, Resistance 3, and To the Moon.

Portal 2 also surprised me in how awful it was. A true insult to the term video gaming.

Uber exaggerating on popular games is fun! Seriously. Stop being ridiculous. You may not like Portal 2, but "an insult to the term video gaming"? Grow up.

Men of War: Assault Squad. Hadn't played any of the previous titles, and the title made the game seem terribly generic, and nothing about the aesthetics implied this was anything out of the ordinary.

Then I played it, experienced the magnificent, delicious, complex gameplay, and it became one of my favourite games of 2011 and one of my favourite strategy titles of all time. Too bad MoW: Vietnam was so disappointing.

Probably Deus Ex: Human Revelution. I've never played any of the previous game so I wasn't entirely sure what to expect but it turned out to be a great game.

Driver: San Francisco and Mortal Kombat The former just because I wasn't expecting a good Driver game, let alone the best in the series. And the latter because it got me to buy a $70 fighting game... I don't normally enjoy fighting games, nor buy them.

Pretty sure that's how the cool kids spell Modern Warfare 3 these days. What other explanation could there be? :?

Saints row the third. After gta 4 I promised I wouldn't play anymore action sanbox games. Played a couple and I promised myslef I wouldn't. But saints row has showed me the light. It's both the most suprising and fun game this year.

Driver: San Fransisco. Once you get used to the ridiculous plot, it ends up being one of the most fun games of the year.

Lord of the Rings: War in the North. The game isn't perfect, far far from it, but it provided really fun couch co op that was disgustingly lacking this generation.

Sonic Generations. Two good Sonic games in a row? I'm surprised Sega, but happy.

For me, it would be Skyrim. I didn't like Oblivion, but Skyrim looked to be a better experience, and it really was. To The Moon was great, but I don't think that really counts because I expected it to be good from the beginning.

I'm with Deus Ex. this game had so much to live up to, and whilst it wasn't as ground breaking as the original, there was enough spirit and life in its environments to make it interesting and keep the fans happy. Just don't mention those boss fights. Christ...

Driver San Francisco-The best racing game this year. Not only the best in the series, but a game that could end up on any top 10 goty list. It has a surpisingly great story, and the shift mechanic is just simply awesome.

Rayman Origins-So much love went into this game. The art direction, the music, the platorming levels. So much awesome packed into this, surprisingly, big game.

People complain about this alot, but I just did the first one last night (barrett?) and it wasnt that bad. I guess people dont like the lack of choice in how to deal with them, but I found it quite refreshing to be forced into a gun fight when id spent the last two hours sneeking around. PS- Resistance 3 should get a special mention, only because its a great game but bombed hard against all the competition this fall.

From a story telling perspective, I think the bosses work. If DE:HR was a movie, those would be the designated action sequences where Jensen had to show off his combative expertise.

From a gameplay one, though, they just suck because it goes completely against the draw of the rest of the game. You have no choice but to fight these guys, and I think they could have done more for the various playstyles. I wouldn't have minded the bosses if they gave you the option to sneak around them during the fight. Put some vents around Barrett while he desperately searches you out, something.

The second boss fight really irritated me because I was playing on hard, and there's an augmentation that really makes that boss fight easy that I wasn't anywhere near having. There just wasn't anything that said "If you play like this, you can win by doing this". I won that fight through complete luck.

I also agree with the Resistance 3 comment :P

Out of the games that I played this year, I'd have to say that Dead Island was the most surprisingly enjoyable game. I always thought the concept sounded like a lot of fun, but deep down, I had my doubts that it would be as good as it actually turned out to be! Don't get me wrong, I don't think the game is for everyone, and yes, it isn't without its faults, but with that said, it's a series that I'd like to see continued.

Conversely, despite enjoying it (while it lasted anway), Saints Row 3 had to be my single biggest disappointment. Keeping things short (go through my posting history if you want my review of it), I just felt like it was a stripped-down version of the previous installment.
