We've had threads where people have had their say on the moments that they really loved their hobby, so I think it's time we had one for those bad times.

Moments like that project you had been waiting ages for had been canned, to when your favorite developer got disbanded.

For me it would have to be either the demise of Sega as a console manufacturer as the Dreamcast finally put the final nail into a grey square shaped coffin

or

The backlash to the Resi 5 debate regarding the original trailer. Not from the media, but from the fans reaction to the media.

You?

I think my worst moment in gaming history would be unification of Squaresoft and Enix. Altou I didn't realize it until later, that event meant the death of the best RPG series I ever played, and turning it into a money-sucking project of "instant hit" overrated crappy games for gay audience.

Farewell, Final Fantasy...

FFX was a huge disappointment, FFX-2 was a gay fashion-show-wannabe meant only to suck some extra money out of audience, and FFXII finally sealed the series' fate for good.

*sigh*

When I found out that the battle system of FFXII is still turn-based. I was so hyped about FFXII because I thought that the battle system is similar as Kingdom Hearts or Rogue Galaxy.

Here's the short story.

I borrowed FFXII from my bestfriend. I immediately played it when I arrived home. I was so excited and can't wait for the first battle. After about 10-15, an enemy popped out. I was like, "finally!". Adrenaline rush started to fill my body. But then...whaaaat?!?! Damn!

It's still turn-based! Yes I could move around, jump, but can't keep on attacking. I still have to wait for a bar to fill (or was it empty?) before I could attack again. I thought I could do combos! I expected at least a weak 3 hit combo at the start.

Returned to game the next day.

I was hoping for somehing new.

I sort of enjoyed playing turn-based RPGs (I had fun playing FFVIII and FFX) until I played Rogue Galaxy and KH series.

I tried play FFX again after playing those 3 games, it suddenly became so boring.

Now, turn-based games are one of my disliked genre.

It was something new. It was evolution of turn based gameplay.

I personally hated Rogue Galaxy and KH series. Very repetitive gameplay and as for action gameplay goes, it was shallow. I'd rather stick with strategic gameplay instead of getting half baked action game.

There is games for everyone, and turn based is games for people like me, so don't complain about a game franchise built on turn based gameplay for having turn based gameplay.

ive rented superman 64 before, but i must say that playing assassin's creed is up there. i had really high hopes for this game. i seriously had not read a bad preview of the game and had no inclination that it had any major flaws. the fact that it was a stealth game (one of my favorite genres) and had an underutilized setting (c'mon, there needs to be more games set in the crusades) only feuled my anticipation. the gorgeous visuals and free running mechanics had me nearly counting the seconds to its release. then i got this boring, buggy, short, repetitive mess rapped in a pretty package. it was horribly underwhelming. it was like expecting a mercedes and getting a scooter. i have a hard time just looking at the cover art.

nintendo's treatment of twilight princess was insulting. its really the only time ive ever taken something so negative in the gaming industry personally. nintendo announced the zelda game every fan had been asking for in an incredibly epic trailer. they repeatedly stated that it would be a gamecube game. then came the delays. but no big deal, right? its to "add major gameplay improvements". so i patiently waited while getting nothing for first party support for the nintendo console i bought (and while nintendo quietly pushes a paper mario game out of the gcn lineup). but its okay, i was waiting for a zelda game with "gameplay improvements". well it turned out that those "gameplay improvements" were for wii. nintendo had delayed the gcn version over a year so they could get higher sales for the wii. thanks, nintendo.

-I agree with you on the demise of SEGA, TC. It still hurts to this day, and gaming's just not the same without them. Sure they still put out games, but they are a mere shadow of what once was.

-Nintendo's new direction. They have completely lost touch with who they are, and have turned their back on the interests of true loyal fans for useless gimmicky garbage "games" for grandma and grandpa. It's quite painful to watch the self-destruction of one of the greatest gaming companies ever. They are now a toy company, not a game company. But hey, what do they care? The money's rolling in.

-The Halo sequels. They weren't even close to the greatness of the original, and complete disappointments.

ROFL! I totally agree with you.

Industry-wise - my worst moment was when Rare parted ways with Nintendo. Goodbye to any hopes of next-gen sequels/remakes to Donkey Kong Country or Jet Force Gemini.

Personally - One of my worst moments was playing 1942 for the NES as a kid. There is no save feature so to beat the game, you have to play it all the way through in one sitting. The levels start at 50 and count down. I got all the way to level 12. Then I got mad about repeatedly dying and threw the controller. It hit the top of the NES and made the game freeze.

I recently read a games magazine that had an article on Nintendo's ending love affair with the hardcore gamer.

It made a good point that seeing as Nintendo started making trading cards then it is no more liable to keep producing 'Hardcore' games than it is to start creating trading cards all over again.

It does break my heart to watch Nintendo basically turning themself into what amounts to a gadget and gifts section of Argos. But considering their past troubles you can barely blame them for wanting to earn some money.

But, as with all popular things like this, so much trash gets released that you cannot find the decent games as there surely isn't enough of them. And with Wii Music it seems that Nintendo will soon be releasing this 'trash' themselves.

A shame considering their immense history and the triple A titles they were renowned for.

2009 to be the year they decide to rework all their franchises? Will it be too little too late for the hardcore gamer?

This may not be the worst, but it's certainly up there. I was beyond crushed when I found out that LucasArts had cancelled Sam & Max: Freelance Police. But hey, it turned out to be a great move for the series. I'll bet the blockheads at Lucas are kicking themselves in the a** now. :D

Personally my worst experience recently was playing Condemned 2 and getting to the second to or last level and then the save data becoming corrupted and I lost everything :(. Company wise, I guess when Sega left the Video Game Industry, I thought the Industry lost something special. Though I only owned The Genesis later during its life time and I only owned a GameGear, Sega made great games and systems.

Yet 2 of the games you mentioned were out befor the merger, and 12 began production befor the merger........so in reality the merger had little to do with your feelings towards those games and instead you are using it as an excuse to validate your dislike

I still think the N64 was awesome. Nintendo didn't get the shaft, they got beat by systems that had better game libraries, period. Gamers go where the games are. Now though, they found a way to win by bringing in non gamers, and making the quality of a systems game library completely irrelevant to how it actually sales. Pretty brilliant move really, if you can't win the game, change the rules.

I would agree with your entire post as long as we agree that the lack of a large game library was a matter of third=party support and not some defficiency on the N64's part.

There was a crucial deficiency of the N64: it was ancient hardware comparatively to other systems and to what third party developers wanted at that time. Nintendo shot themselves in the foot by choosing to stick with cartridges. That's not to mention the long gaps between great games developed by them that were so far and few between that only the most die-hard fans stood by. Can you blame those that didn't? Other great games were coming out far more often on superior hardware, while those who patiently waited for Nintendo to get their act together continued to wait and wait.

First of all, Nintendo's games were few and far between because they took their time to make the games great. I can think of examples. Furthermore, all those developers who backed away from Nintendo for sticking to cartridges were idiots. They complained that cartidges were already outdated and that the 64 was difficult to program on, yet Nintendo had no trouble making high-quality games. And referring back to my original comment, what about the GameCube? It had better graphics than the PS2, a stylish and portable size and shape for convenience, an innovative controller and a large assortment of excellant first-party games. where was the third-party support? And all the while, people posted on internet forums complaining that there weren't enough good games for the GameCube. If anyone has a complaint about the Nintendo Wii's impact on the gaming industry, blame the third-party publishers.

Technically it was a deficiency with Nintendo AND the hardware. The hardware was absurdly difficult to develop for, and carts were, at that time, very much outdated. Also, Nintendo was still being a massive prick to third parties. It was simply really hard to make money developing games on that system, no developers owed Nintendo anything, still don't. Sony made it easy to make money, so they made games for the PSone instead of the N64, Nintendo got the shaft sure, but that shaft was firmly gripped by Yamauchi.

EnigManic

Gamecube actually had rock solid third party support out of the gate. Back then, most mutliplat games were PS2/GC, with Xbox left out in the cold. Thing is this though, those third party games that came out in 2002 and 2003, sold like crap. Everyone was buying GC Nintendo made games only, for the most part. So developers simply shifted their releases to the two systems where people would actually buy them. It was't until early 2004 and forward that the GC third party support dried up and died, holidays 2003 was the last chance GC third party had, but the third party games all sold like complete crap yet again, and so the third party support shifted. Nintendo fans simply didn't buy the third party games. That and the GC pad was specifically built from the ground up for first party Nintendo games.

You can't build your controller for your own games, and expect the third parties to rework and change their games to work around your wonky controller. Most third party games just didn't play well on that pad, aside from Beyond Good and Evil, because of how Zelda esque it was. I loved REmake and RE Zero, but they were both a massive PITA to play on that controller.

*sigh*

I agree since FFIX (the best FF IMO) it has been downhill for me too, FFX was ok, X-2 was meh, but FFXII was a disgrace and one of the worsed games I have played.

Seems strange that the games that the media are loving at the moment the general public are not.

Grand Theft Auto 4, Final Fantasy XII, Halo 3. All loved by the media but vilified by the fans.

I'm not sure why people dislike FFXII so much.

Maybe it wasn't dramatic enough for those drama lovers. There was no Tidus and Yuna like annoying love story, or Zidane and Dagger, Edgar and Terra, etc etc etc.

Granted FFXII is not perfect. Gambit system was bit too useful and made the game be more of hands off approach. Gambit system was an OPTION, and if you play without gambit system, the gameplay was deeper than any FF series, but it's difficult to not complain about gambit system because it's there. Once it's there, it's just difficult to ignore.

Story was vague and was missing a lot of pieces. The scale of the story was too grand to have such brief moments of story telling, and many of the cut scenes ended up being scenes that didn't tell enough of the story or characters. However, I think they did decent job creating beginning, middle, and end even though the game came out incompleted. After all, Matsuno left the company and the team in the middle of development, and only thing the rest of the company could do was just to wrap it up and release it for the sake of not drowning time and money into garbage bin.

Overall, FFXII does give much bigger scale than any other FF game in terms of the world, story, etc. It also has one of the most solid gameplay and system WHILE being evolution of very generic and old combat engine. License system could've used more thoughts and balance, but compared to sphere grid system of FFX, it was much better. Story is quite diluted so it's a big flaw, but I think Square did best they can under the circumstance they were in.

In other words, it simply doesn't deserve all the blind criticism fans are giving. More or less, the media reviews were quite fair with FFXII and it is indeed great game. If you haven't enjoyed it, then too bad but just because you didn't enjoy it means it is bad game.

I didn't enjoy Call of Duty 4, Halo, and I was bored out of my ****ing mind when I played Half-Life and Half-Life 2. Even Portal, I didn't find it that enjoyable. I thought Knights of Old Republic was rather bland as well.Mario Galaxy was rather boring too. Does that mean all these games are ****ty games?

If you want to complain, you can find complaints in ANY game. Even your favorite game is full of complaints in different perspective. Just because you didn't like it, it doesn't mean game was poor.

and if FFXII was your worst ever moments in videogames, then you had a good videogame life.

For me it would have to be either the demise of Sega as a console manufacturer as the Dreamcast finally put the final nail into a grey square shaped coffin

Worst, that was the BEST! Segas a horrible gaming company, they've disapointed me for years. Glad to see Sonic's demise as well. Worst gaming moment had to be when I purchased a Game Cube and thought Nintendo was on its way out with Sega, thank god for the Wii!

Were you even around during SEGA's heyday? This has got to be a joke post.

When I was younger I kept trying to beat lvl9 CPUs in Super Smash Bros Melee, with extreme frustration. That is the only time a game has made me cry.

...You can't build your controller for your own games, and expect the third parties to rework and change their games to work around your wonky controller. Most third party games just didn't play well on that pad, aside from Beyond Good and Evil, because of how Zelda esque it was. I loved REmake and RE Zero, but they were both a massive PITA to play on that controller.CronoSquall

Do you see the irony here?

Developers have to "rework and change their games to work" based on the console specs, so why should it be any different for the controller scheme? Not to mention, the Xbox and 360 controllers obviously took a cue from the gamecube controller, particularly with the shoulder buttons and the analog sticks.

Furthermore, if the third-party games didn't sell well for the Gamecube, why blame Nintendo? Shouldn't the 3rd party developers have made better games?

To an extent he has a point. Sega's recent line up has been shocking. And it's best games have been made by companies that they have acquired recently.

But in their heyday they made a lot of good stuff, quality titles and their platform games (not just Sonic) were renowned for being fun and hard.

But I understand what he's saying about the Gamecube as well, I thought Nintendo was on the way out. Then we got the Wii, and look what that's done for Nintendo's gaming faithful................................

Triangle hard, you say if FFXII was the worsed moment in gaming for me then I have had it good. But The reason it is my worsed moment is because of the dissapointment of the game, after FF X-2 I thought the series would get better. I was wrong they produced a mediocre story, with a new combat system which I hated. It was an effort to make myself play the game, whereas with FF V-IX, it was an effort to play other games while I was half way through any one of them.

Luckily though Lost odyssey came out for 360 and I found that to be a brilliant RPG, hope there is more like this on the market ^^ classic turn based all the way...

Worst moments are:

- when Mortal Kombat II was released on Mega Drive, it wasn't on par with its SNES counterpart.

- WWF Wrestlemania runs too freakin' slow on SNES that I couldn't pull off those 20+ combos.

- when Sega abandoned Saturn.

- when EA passed the development of 16-bit NBA Live series to another bunch of progammers (starting with Live 97).

- almost puked while playing Alien Trilogy (classic FPS by Acclaim).

The first one for me is playing rollercoaster tycoon 2 for the first time. I really enjoyed the original with expansions a lot, so I was thrilled when RCT 2 was finally released. Then the game shipped, and all the magic from the original game was gone, and now I know RCT 1 was probably the best of the series not only for its time, but altogether.

Second one was the last level of halo 3. I really liked the game up until that point. I had a blast playing through the levels and being in huge fights, but it looked like they had to finish the ending the afternoon before shipping. The idea of letting you race your warthog to a final destination like in the first game was a good one, but I expected more than driving over... metal plates? I really don't know how the last level could have functioned besides being a galactic race track.

Lets see probably once I found out that the developer behind Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines and Arcanum Troika Games was no more. It still makes me sad thinking about what other great RPGs they could have made.

Distant second is how dissapointed I was with Oblivion after how much I enjoyed Morrowind.

When FFVII got totally overhyped and every forum, MMO and any other kind of thing where you get to choose a nickname got flooded with billions and billions of Clouds and Sephiroths.

They weren't even close to the greatness of the original, and complete disappointments.

eregol

Ever since nintendo started making less hardcore, i just decided to switch companies. microsoft is more like my style now. nintendo couldn't keep up with them or sony for that matter.

One of my worst moments was when my friends and I had put in over 600 hours on Soul Calibur for the DC, only to have our save file get corrupted, and losing all of the data. There was a collective 'Awwwww ****!' by all of us in the room when we saw we had lost all of that work and time. Then came the realization that we would have to go back and re-unlock everything again. Let's just say none of us got to bed on time that night...

Also, when CAPCOM disbanded Clover Studios. I enjoyed Viewtiful Joe quite a bit, and Okami is simply one of my favorite games of all time. So when I found out I wouldn't be getting to play other installments of those games (especially Okami), I was pretty bummed. I love you CAPCOM. But why?! WHYYY?!

Lastly, and this one hurts a lot, the downfall of the Mana series. Secret of Mana is one of my all-time fave games, and a stone-cold classic to boot. The sequels, however, are absolute rubbish (specifically the later ones). It still pains me to me this day just how bad that series has become. For shame Square, for shame.

My worst moment or period was when I played Sniper Elite. Seriously, it is an awfully boring game, pointless and not immersing at all. I finished it however, because I don't like leaving things undone. But it is definitely the last game I'd ever play again!
