I was looking into new trailers for games and a clip of Ocarina of Time showed up and I started to really think about it all bias feelings aside and I came to the conclusion that Ocarina of Time has got to be one of the 5 best games of all time. These discussions turn out very bland usually due to the fact that someone can say it's "your opinion" or its not my type of game but I think a somewhat intelligent person can appreciate a quality game when they see it.

First of all you have to account for the hardware it was using. Thelarge rich landscapes and different areas you could visit made it a journey from A to B to C that required a large amount of exploring, now once recieving Epona and being able to make it to different places faster but still requiring you to go on yet another adventure. Aside from just the size of the world the camera angles although some could say were annoying in some cases I feel very brilliant, if you see these picturesque still frames they place you in when you arrive in some towns I see it as something that belongs in some video game art museum. Any annoying camera angle seemed to only keep you guessing and keeping you sharp while adding that Lucas Arts Adventure game kind of feel where you have to realize everything in the frame and how the frames connect as well.

The music in terms of N64 games was on another level, from having an orchestrated world map to the utilization of creating your own music with the Ocarina added the creativity a game as almost yet to match even to this day and is something I feel RPG's as a whole lack in most cases.

Overall the pacing of the game in addition to the change from adult link to young link and then back again at will, the amazing replay value, lengthy story and large amount of fun sidequests. Funny I just wanted to say how I felt this game is top 5 but after typing about it I realize there could be pages upon pages talking about this game in depth (fly fishing, use of items like bombs and arrows in multiple effective ways) I'm starting to think this game is top 3 hands down, and to all the Link To The Past fan boys as great as it was I think you have to admit that this game was a muchgreater achievment.

Zelda OOT is definitely a top-tier game, without a doubt, and I'm not even really a big fan of Zelda, tbh. I would put it more into a top ten list than a top five list.

What are your other four? LOL

But, for the thread's sake, I'll list my top five, with a brief explanation why.

5.) Ninja Gaiden (Introduction of cutscenes, a challenge to play, and a decent storyline)

4.) Super Mario All-Stars & World (All of your popular Mario 2DSS with improved audio & graphics, with save state ability)

3.) Pong (The only game I know that defined a generation)

2.) Civilization (a complete turn-based strategy game open-ended with mulitple ways of winning, and different difficulty ratings Civ II improved it with multiplayer ability. As I said in my review, this is Sid Meier's epic masterpiece)

and...

1.) GTA 3: San Andreas (Cliche? Perhaps. This game knocked my socks off though. You can fly, parachute, swim, boat, gamble, shoot, work out, change clothes, or do the storyline. It even has limited multiplayer ability. There isn't a whole lot you CAN'T do in this game. How many other games can say they can do all these things so well?)

Honorable mentions: Final Fantasy VI, F-Zero, Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania, Battletoads) - to a top ten list, LOL.

It is one of the best games of all time considering the impact it had on the gaming industry when it came out. To say it was a bad game is a pure subjective statement. And it still holds up pretty good considering the age. But, of course, it's also subjective to say it's one of the 5 best games of all time or to say that it's the best game of all time.

Haha I agree but that is arguable. Although I think it is inarguable that it is one of the best.

I have to say that I completely agree with TC here. The game is absolutely brilliant and so well constructed. To me it is the best game that Nintendo has ever released. That may be a bold statement but just look at the depth of this game for it's time (which by the way still stands pretty strong in my eyes).

1. Ocarina of Time - The entire experience in 3d, and the revolutionary lock on system

2. Super Mario Bros. - redefined video games

3. Pacman - it was just that big

4. Halo or Goldeneye - redefined shooters, Halo is the modern incarnation of the mechanics introduced in goldeneye

5. Pong - the birth of the videogame craze

Imo the 5 most defining games.

"Best" will never be anything but opinion as no matter how good one particular game was or the impact it made for people, at the same time it can simply not appeal to someone else, in fact Ocarina of Time would not even be in my top 25 as I've had a lot more fun with a lot more games. I feel the same way about Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark, the other 2 most-mentioned "best" games on the N64.

Its all opinion, but here's my list.

5. Kirby's Adventure - Probably one of the largest games for NES, both graphically reaching and scope of gameplay.

4. Resident Evil 4 - I know, its not a 'clasic' per-say, but this is easily one of the best games of last gen.

3. Metroid Prime - Atmospheric. Beautiful. Awesome. Best game of last gen hands down.

2. LoZ: LTTP - What can i say, this game consumed hours of my childhood with its colorful world, tight controls, and involving battle system.

1. Super Mario Bros 3 - Hands down the best platformer of all time. I can play this game after playing Galaxy, and still be blown away with level design of this true clasic.

Yep, OOT isn't on my list. Truth is, i never had an N64. I had an NES, and an SNES, then a GC. Needless to say, i was a bit behind the times. I've played OOT but it didn't stick in my mind after having played so many great GC games, notably Wind waker .

Sorry for the nintendo fandom, but if i had to throw a non nintendo game in, it would be Sonic 3 & knuckles. That game came closest to matching the brilliance of Mario 3. Also the Fallout series ranks high in my mind as of late.

I agree with this 100%. Infact I think there are some flaws in Ocarina of Time that hold it back, and that were fixed in later Zelda games. Yeah I know thats bait buts that just me, but its not a fact TC. You say donot use my opinion, but thats what it is an opinion. Infact for me the definitive Zelda game is not OOT, but a LTTP which while it may not be 3D just plain does everything right. That game to me is flawless and its just pure epic....

OoT is a great game, but I think that MM is better. But, yeah, it is one of the best games of all time and is still a blast to play. (Aside from the Water Temple).

While those games are great, and amazing to say the least, I would not put them on a general scope of reception or impact. I am against a definitive list of the greatest games of all time, because its subjective, but you should look at the impact as well. Planescape is amazing no doubt, however donot forget there are not many who have played it and it did not make a big impact on the industry. Games that did make an impact should be on the list, and games that did would be Pacman, Tetris, The Original Super Mario Bros, the Original Legend of Zelda, Doom, Street Fighter II, Grand Theft Auto 3, Baldurs Gate and amongst others. Why those games? While some of these games may not have aged the best, they have had an impact that changed the industry...Ocatina and Metal Gear Solid would be amongst those games and Deus Ex. No matter how well a game is, its the impact if you should make a definitive list. However, there should never be a list, but thats how I would see how one would be made if a definitive list should be made.

Ocarina of Time was the first in-depth video game that I had played...or at least the first video game that I played and remembered since I was so young! To this day, I enjoy playing it thoroughly...getting all of the heart pieces and Skulltulas. It can definitely be ranked in my top 5 games of all time, but then again I am an avid RPGer, haha! Good choice though, Ocarina of Time is definitely my preferred addition to the Zelda series.

top 100 lists are always going to be flawed, and wrong to everybody but the person writing them they are limited by what games the writer played, what consoles he owned, , genre preference , and even where he/she lives can have an impact. just looking at those lists , I see no Street Fighter Alpha 3, no Panzer Dragoon Saga, no Grandia , no Lunar . seems like they just go by popular opinion , which isn't always right.

But the argument is based on subjectivity, not objectivity.

The only way to really make an objectively based list would be to base it off of sales but some times good games don't sell well and terrible games sell great. For example, Psychonauts didn't sell as well as it should've but E.T. on Atari 2600 sold very well. (btw, thanks to this thread I'm probably gonna play OoT today)

just to elaborate on why where a person lives might have an impact. if a person lives in the US for instance, there are bound to be more NES and SNES games on their list, as those consoles were very popular and thus the writer had a higher exposure to them on the other hand, if this was a Japanese writer, chances are consoles like the PCEngine (TG16) and the Saturn , which were more popular in Japan , will probably be mentioned more often, then the N64 ,which was less popular.

One of the five best games of its console generation? Definitely. Top 5 of all time? Definitely not.

It had a great impact with exploring the idea of 3D gaming, but it didn't break any new ground. You could make the argument that Golden Eye was more influential from that console era, in that it showed beyond a doubt that a FPS could work on a console, something that everyone very much doubted at the time. And as we all know, FPS's (specifically Multiplayer) have become the dominant player in the console market. Its difficult to find reasons to consider OOT as a top 5 all time game, especially when you are forced to consider its lasting impact. Games, as previously mentioned, like Civilization, helped to establish new ground within the gaming world, and established conventions that are still being imitated today. Then you have games like Myst, which helped almost single handedly to push the idea of CD gaming into the American psyche.

It's a wonderful game, but it lacks the industry or social significance to warrant a top 5 spot.

Heres my master list. I dont personally think this is the top games ever because of my personal tastes but I think these are the top because of the general scope of their reception

1) Ocarina of Time

2) Deus EX

3) Planscape Tourment

4) System Shock 2

5) Metal Gear Solid

TheTrueMagusX1

I picked them because its kind of the pretentious list ya know? lol.. Its kinda like how a movie dudes like Ebert and Roper would say the top movie list is like Citizen Kane, 2001 a Space Odyssey, etc.

I dont haved a top5 I guess.

Began with with the Mario's (1, 2, 3)

Amazed myself and finished with all the Zelda`s including the GameBoy series.
Donkey Kong Country, Perfect Dark, GoldenEye...
NES: Lode Runner, Mega Man...
I had hours, days, MONTHS of fun with all of these.

What I noticed is that when I want to play them again (Virtual Consle, emulators)
Im like O, YEAH for a moment but they dont interest me that much anymore.
Cant get myself to finish Ocarina of Time or the Donkey Kong Country`s again.

While I just finished Donkey Kong Country Returns with all the KONG letters and puzzle pieces
and had lots of fun doing so.

So, the Games I HAD the most fun with?

- Mario 2 and 3
- Zelda OOT
- GoldenEye
- Paper Mario: The thousand year door
- Perfect Dark.

The games I really like now:

Super Paper Mario
Mario Galaxy 1 and 2
Donkey Kong country Returns

I did not really The Twilight Princess btw, looking forward to The Skyward Sword!

edit: after givin g it some more thought I forgot to mention 2 NEs games:
Clu Clu Land and Circus Charlie :D

I agree it is my top 5 as well, although the list is constantly changing as I play more legacy games.
OOT remains in that top 5 list. I still it once a year on my gamecube.

What makes it a top five game is that it is the complete package. I am playing throughTwilight Princess
right now. I am loving it. Its easier than OOT but I am really enjoying how it looks and sounds on the
gamecube. So far, its the best game i have played on the gamecube, although I have yet to play some
of the major exclusives.
