We need some refreshing WRPGs and more SHMUPs in my opinion. And we need a revival of the point-and-click genre. Sam and Max may have made their return, but what about Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacles? Plus I think the industry should start bridging the genre gaps..

RTSs, it's not made for the casuals out there since we do know that a lot of strategy gives them a torn brain muscle :(

I would like some old-fashioned side-scrolling platformers or shooter, similar to SMB or Contra, but new devs take on them, a la Alien Hominid.

That's a good point. I used to play FA-18 Hornet to death, Korea, too. It was always satisfying to land on a carrier :)

I second that, but for right now, the Wii VC and the XLA is enough to provide me a good dose of side scrolling action.

I swear I could never actually land on one. IT's probably almost as hard as it is in real life....

I disagree with fighting games. There are still quite a few games released in the genre every year. Sure, the output isn't as high, but they ain't non-existant.

Beat 'em ups

  • Virtua Fighter 5
  • Soul Calibur IV
  • Tekken 6
  • Guilty Gear whatever
  • King of Fighters whatever
  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl
  • Dead or Alive 5

2D Fighters. I blame Capcom for that. The last one they made was Marvel vs Capcom 2. I also blame SNK for keeping most of their 2D fighters Japan exclusive.

I'd say SHMUPs (the industry for that is way too Japan-centric), point-and-click adventures (thank goodness for the DS and Sam & Max), and beat-em-ups. Not fighters, but brawlers a la Double Dragon and Final Fight. The only ones I can think of from last gen are The Warriors (so awesome) and Final Fight Streetwise (not so awesome).

Yes.  Yes.  The Warriors was severely underrated and under-appreciated.  It was easily the best brawler I've ever played, and I remember when Double Dragon was new.

WRPGs in the footsteps of Fallout and Planescape.

I'd say Adventure games, but they've been seeing a resurgance lately, and there are games like Gray Matter and Overclocked coming in the next year.

Didn't RTS gamers just get Supreme Commander, C&C3 and one of the games of last year...Company of Heroes?

Not to mention the inevitable Starcraft 2 announcement. RTS is doing just fine.

What the hell are you doing up at this time. Wait what the hell am I doing up at this time. Night all.

PS I agree there are still loads of RTS about, they are even making a foray onto the console market.

True but not many actually care about them. There are an average of 20 or 30 that are released every year while FPS, fighters, racing, etc. etc. get at least 100 or 200 or maybe even MORE every year.

Another one I thought of is arcadey flight sims. Basically there's Ace Combat and that's it, unless you stoop to the planes (PUN!) of mediocrity with stuff like Airforce Delta. Bleck.
Even the old staples of Starfox and Afterburner seem to have lost their edge. Hopefully Heatseeker will be as much fun as I hope it is.

The fighter genre is not doing very well lately. The latest DOA/VF/Tekken/SC all play pretty much exactly the same as the previous entries in the series.

I'm waiting for Starcraft 2. That'll be the next strategy game I buy, in all likeliness (even if that is a few years off).

Genres I think are dead:

Point and click adventure (Myst, anyone?)

Survival Horror is a bit bland these days... its only got Resident Evil and Silent Hill games these days. Unless "Sadness" really eventuates for Wii. Oh, actually... thinking about it, there's also Manhunt 2. Hmmm.... not as dead as I first thought.

RTS's aren't really dead, TURN-BASED strategy games are as good as dead. No one cares about them anymore.

Farming Simulators (I need a fix in between harvest moon games, and on my PC).

Deer/Game hunting games are as good as dead. (I'd like to see a game which is just purely a Safari hunting game on the African savannah hunting big game, with online multiplayer so you can have hunting parties in jeeps hunting Rhino's etc, I reckon that would be freaking sweet). Thats what I was hoping Afrika was about. Â
