Meh I threw in some others for good measure but I couldn't fit them all in. Maybe I'll take another one with the Virtua Fighters, Tekkens, the other DOA's and some others like Accent Core which aren't in the photo.

But seriously with all of these fighters and the sexy black beast of an Arcade Stick the supports two people at once. Man how can you go wrong?

*well unless your Dreamcast blows up in your face*

No more Street Fighter Alpha 3

But getting a new Dreamcast next week :D

The controls. They're insufferably and needlessly complicated and I don't have the patience to learn them then master the timing of using them. It should come as no surprise then that the only figher I play a lot is Smash Bros Melee. That's the way fighters should be.

I love fighters.. heck... lately... over the past year or so.. I've been taking fighting games differently. Before... I admit I was moreso the button masher, and I would play a fighting game for a while... beat the arcade/story mode with all characters on normal, maybe try buying/unlocking everything for a while then stop after about a month or less of playing that game.

Now... I'm kind of getting back into the spirit and really learning the fighting engines in the game, learning how to be better, fix my timing, perform more than my standard set of moves and learning when best to use a certain move.

Still... one drawback of fighters of today... it's not essily accessible to many wherein my problem ies..no one I know (friends/family) will take it seriously as I do or even care now... so I just battle button mashers, and when I'm really good at the game... they aren't a challenge so... they quit earlier and earlier to the point where they don't even bother wanting to play... :(

Now that you have alpha 3 go buy it for Alpha 2 and Alpha 2 gold. Read my Alpha 2 review.

There isn't anything bad about 3D ones except they are inferior to their 2D counterparts. DOA, Tekken and Soul Caliburfeel like its somewhat arcadey and somewhat realistic. Virtua Fighter is a fighting sim. All of Capcom's 3D fighters have 2D gameplay.

No, simple controls don't make up for a bad game.

Let me just put it this way. Ryu doing a fireball attack requires a quarter-circle combined with punch. Mario doing a fireball requires a press of the B button.
Not the best comparison, I know, but still, in comparison pulling off special attacks in other fighters just feels cumbersome and unnecessarily complex in comparison to Smash. I love the competitive spirit of fighters, but when it feels like I'm fighting the controls as much as my opponent, it sucks all the fun right out.

Complex controllers is what keeps the fighting genre a hardcore genre to the elitists. The lower the entry barrier for newbies, the better.

The problem with that is a person can spam the same attack more easily.

Attacks: a, b, up a and b, down a and b, right and left a and b

Smash attacks: Up A, Down A, Left and Right A

Not much variety.

The problem with that argument is that it's hard to spam in Smash and get away with it. It also helps that the fighting system allows variety in terms of combinations despite the limited list of attacks. As a result, there is no set list of buttons to press to get X combo to work.

Factor in all those attacks, grabs & throws (four moves there, as well as the ability to hit them while held), aerial attacks (five attacks there), and items, and then spread that out over 25 characters and you have quite a lot of variety. Besides, like any fighter, you can spam the same attack over and over, but a truly skilled opponent will still demolish you if that's your technique. I can say this with authority, speaking as a Peach player who got demolished at tourneys a couple of times before figuring out I need more technique than "Use her down-smash". If anything, I view the simplicity as not making it easier to be cheap, but making it easier to become skilled. It reduces the boundry between me and having fun. Frankly, I appreciate that.

Factoring those stuff doesn't amount to much since if you factor in the same stuff from other fighting games you have moreof those things and items are broken assist's.If you throw a poke ball at the opponent and get an lets say Entei the amount of damage it does is way too much.

Besides, like any fighter, you can spam the same attack over and over, but a truly skilled opponent will still demolish you if that's your technique. Not true. In my campus' video game club when Smash is played some people choose Kirby and spam his Down B attack on a constant basic to the point where you have to choose a stage where that can't be done.

If anything, I view the simplicity as not making it easier to be cheap, but making it easier to become skilled. It reduces the boundry between me and having fun. Frankly, I appreciate that. Hoffgod
I dont. In the Naruto Japanese GC fighting game you could do an infinte combo juggle using one of the characters by pressing the same attack button repeatedly and there is nothing that can be done to counter it. In Smash if you're standing by the edge you could use Yoshi's B attack as an instant kill and one of the cheapest tactic I've ever seen is if you have more life's than your opponent and are playing as Kirby you can use the B attack to absorb the oppnent and jump of the stage repeatedly killing yourself and your opponent until the game is over.

I'm sorry, Kage, but if you are using Kirby and Yoshi, two of the lowest tiered characters in Smash Bros., as well as item balance (Items were never meant for balance anyways) as examples against SSBM, you obviously don't know much about the game to comment on it. Scrubs playing at your campus don't count. Keep in mind that I'm not comparing Smash to something like Virtua Fighter but it sure as hell ain't as simplistic as you make it out to be.

Also, keep in mind that games like Naruto aren't the only games plagued by easy as hell infinites. The MvC series is plagued by infinites (Wolvie's corner infinite) and broken to the point where it gets beyond silly.

Man I love playing on the Arcade Sticks. I've literally lost track of the entire night.

  1. KOF 2002 (Enjoy it!)
  2. KOF 2003 (Enjoy it!)
  3. Guilty Gear Accent Core
  4. Virtua Fighter 4 Evo (No 5 Yet)
  5. DOAU
  6. Street Fighter III 3rd Strike
  7. Marvel vs Capcom 2
  8. Capcom vs SNK 2 EO

Oh man we just played fighters all night infront of the big screen in the lobby. I completly lost track of all the school work I needed to do. This is only going to get much worse when I come home Thanksgiving and get another Dreamcast!

I've having huge difficulties with Guilty Gear on the sticks though. Button placement is much different and I always think of the Burning Revolver as the Crack Shoot/Crack Shot/Kick Back move as the same buttom yet they aren't. Also using using a Medium Kick (Standard Capcom 6 Button) for a Shoryuuken Type move is just Akward. Ah Guilty Gear. You control as akward to me as your crazy lovable cast :D

Fighters are too hard for me. Even pulling off those moves in practice is nigh impossible, never mind using them at the correct time in the thick of battle. I don't know how you fighting fans do it without years of training. The only fighting game I like is Smash Bros. because all the moves are easy to do. Actually, I quite like Soul Calibur as well, but it didn't keep me interested for long.

It was Hoffgod who stated earlier in another thread that Smash has 2D gameplay and a good comparison is Power Stone speciffically #2.

I played most of the fighting games at arcades so I got used to it as soon as I bought an arcade stick. I only use it with the Dreamcast because its d-pad is one of the worst ones.

They are just characters. The entire game is built upon how fast the character is the better they are in most cases. Shiek is like the god tier of the game. You can get away with doing some things with Shiek that you cant do with other characters.

I already know that the MvC games are a broken mess from a balanced perspective but it didn't stop it from being at EVO for what is seems like forever.

Shiek is not god tier. Not even close. Shiek has speed but lacks solid knockbacks outside of Smashes. Shiek's speed did get her up there in terms of tiers, however. Besides, if speed was always a major factor, Ness would be over Ganondorf and Ganondorf would not even rate that high. The fact is that weight, priority, reach, power and speed are all factors on who to choose as your main. The problem with Smash is that it's too unevenly spread out. Characters like Bowser simply don't have three out of the four things needed to succeed.

God tier would be Marth, who seems to have stupid reach, speed and power at everything he does.

**EDIT** Wow, I was really redundant in one of the sentences. Damn you, late nights!
