Should We Keep the GUFU Forum Open to All Posters?

^^Topic.

Last month, I opened the GUFU forum to all posters for GUFU's Birthday event and I was planning to close it after the festivities but, well, I disappeared from the internet for a few weeks. During that time, I was hoping nohing would happen as a result of the forum being open. Well, nothing did happen. As soon as I returned, I considered closing the forum again, but never got around to it. So, should we let it remain open?

In case you were wondering, the only reason the board was closed the first time was because of a spammer attack and since the forums have been open, despitethe advertisement in my sig, there's been no such attacks.

We only did not get horded due to no one knowing. The point of GUFU is to kinda keep it a provate club.

I mean, there's probably a lot of posters out there who'd be interested in GUFU and may never get invited, but they could be great posters.

I actually agree with Jecht on this one. If we keep it open then there's no need for the invitations thread, and therefore people we don't want in the union can easily gain access. There has to be some control, as I can see a few disgruntled posters we rejected in the past coming back and biting us in the bum. Not to mention that as long as they comply with the ToS, we can do nothing to get rid of them.

If the board remains open than we can't kick anyone our because there will be nothing to kick them out of. the only way they would be dealt with is by site mods.

Maybe we should just leave it open for a while and see what happens. If it gets bad we can go back to the old method.

The bad posters eventually get banned anyway. Doesn't take too long.

In all seriousness. GUFU will lose it's appeal for me if it opens to all users on gamespot. The novelty of being in GUFU is that you know you were kind of chosen among the best in system wars(Gamespot more or less these days).

Well,the way jechtshot put it,I kind of agree.You were voted in because the people here thought you were one of the best posters in System Wars,but if you let anyone in,it's not really that special anymore.

I don't think it's snobbery. It's just like a club of sorts where level headed people can chill out. I'm not saying "this is only for us, anyone who wants in can just **** off." -- Oh no, i'm definitely all for new members. But what I meant was that this place is kind of like a refuge from all the crap that gets thrown around in system wars. You can't deny that there is at least something special about our members. Otherwise we're only denying the very foundations of the union, and ourselves for that matter.

Exactly what I meant. My comment was not meant to be sinister, fanboyish or "elitist" in any way. Like I said before, i'm all for some new members. I guess you could say it's the privacy aspect I like.

Actually, Adobe, as a voice of reason, has convinced me. I see the point of making it private, and keeping it closed makes it more rewarding. Being a member is nice and all, but being able to post in the forum is what makes GUFU, for me anyway, and to know that anyone can do so without exhibiting the qualities GUFU stands for does kind of murk up the point a bit.

If only the union boards were much more controllable... :?

It would be interesting I think to have a single thread for any person to post while the rest of the board is locked to GUFU's only... but seeing as how I do not think that is possible, then I will have to go and agree with Jecht.

Perhaps we could have a new method of recruitment where a user who wishes to get in can PM an officer with an "essay" of sorts of why they believe they should be a member of GUFU and the officer can post it in the recruitment thread and then us GUFU's can vote on it.

Now that I think about it, I change my vote. All the posts above give good reasons as to why it should be closed.
