After reading about a thread about the number of polygons in snakes mustache compared to a mii I got an idea. I remember my intro to engineering class where we did some 3d modeling with inventor and it was pretty fun. Then I thought, hmm I wonder if I would have any chance at making so character models.
So does anyone know where I could download some software to make my own character models in a engine such as source or maybe the original half-life? Or maybe atleast the name of the software? I know there is a character model viewer in the source SDK as well as a map maker, but I just want to doodle with models (maybe editing existing ones).
Also, even more ideally I would like to be able to see the effects of lighting on the characters, I'm currently doing independt art study, so I don't have a fourth period and so I need a certain number of hours in doing art (this modeling could probably count). I'm not really that good, especially with shading/shadows so I thought it would be easy to see shadows from various angles through a modeler program.
Anyone know where I could get something to do this? Or a forum where they would know?
I'm not really sure if that is what I'm looking for. Maybe you could tell him what I said in my OP and see if he thinks it is what I would want. Most important part of what I want is a model creator for half life 1 or source engine.
Also I don't want something archaic like MilkShape 3D, I'm comerfortable with something like inventor
I might look back at milkshape 3D though if it has been upgraded, I simply couldn't work with it when I tried last time.
Ya, MilkShape 3D sucks. It would be fine if I could simply rotate a camera where I was making the model, but it doesn't let you.
First off, don't be talkin' smack about Milkshape. I don't know which version you've used, but you can certainly rotate the camera all you want. I used that program for a long time to make DX models until I got Maya. Quite frankly Maya is the *****, but it also costs a lot of money (unless you go through other means, of coursE). You also probably won't be able to do anything with the models right off the bat with Maya.
You'll probably want to check out Softimage|XSI EXP, which is a free version of Softimage's XSI modeling software created for use with the Source engine.
Sorry, Milkshape is just horrible. you have to create the vertices one at a time and you get three static planes which makes it the biggest pain in the ass ever. I found Blender 3D and it is working pretty good. Not as easy to use as Inventor because I can't really set limits on stuff (inventor was made for modeling buildings and stuff I guess, so it would make sense). I'm still messing around with it. Would softimage be similar to blender 3D? I've been working with blender for the past few hours trying to get to know the prgram. Blender looks like it can do quite a bit. I might switch to softimage though, I don't think Blender is the best program to make game models in
I have no idea how Blender or Softimage|XSI work, all I know is that XSI can spit out files that you can use in your Source mods. I very much doubt Blender can do the same, but its possible that someone made a plugin that would let you do so.
Softimage|XSI looks a bit out of reach for what I'm doing. I think Blender will be good. I guess I will just work on making pre rendered stuff and working on my regular drawing skills. I might get more interested into mods after I gradutate from college.
