2 years ago, Viacom has filed a lawsuit against Youtube/Google for $1 Billion due to copyright infringement. Now, they have won and the judge has ordered Youtube to grant Viacom the power to look through people's information if they either uploaded a video and even watched a video. That means they can delete whoever they want. Does anyone see what's wrong here? Our rights are now being violated by corporations. Sure they have the right to delete videos if they have theior content, but it's not right for them to go through ou files (yes, they can now get us through third-party sites) and can get us. I see a major problem with that. Viacom has now became tyrants. Anyoen else see this as a problem

Viacom has been the epitome of a faceless, heartless corporation for years. They didn't just now become tyrants.

Everything seemed to change ever since Viacom and CBS split from each other

My understanding is that Viacom requested the information so they compare the number of views of legitimate content versus copyrighted content. While am not happy about the decision, I doubt Viacom will glean any real information from youtube's roughly 2 terabyte's of records.

I just did the research, If a person boycotted Viacom, they would have to give up:

  • Film Production and Distribution: Viacom International, Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks, Republic Pictures, MTV Films, Nickelodeon Movies, Go Fish Pictures
  • Television Networks: Comedy Central, Logo, BET, Spike, TV Land, Nick at Nite, Nickelodeon, Noggin, The N, Nick Jr., TEENick, MTV, VH1, MTV2, CMT, MHD
  • Television Production and Television Distribution: DreamWorks Television
  • Video Gaming: Xfire, Harmonix, GameTrailers, Neopets
  • Internet Sites: Screwattack

They're not going to win. DMCA protects Youtube from the actions of their users, just like any other service provider. Viacom is just crying and stamping its feet and saying "but I don't wanna joing the Internet age!!!"

I have to question what would make a judge give that ruling. Wouldn't that set a presedent for a business to demand the credit card numbers on eBay because of someone selling counterfeit merchendise?

It's acctually a shame... I don't use YouTube for anything other than music really, but I can see the problem. Soon all my favorite music videos are gonna get taken down, and YouTube is gonna be preeety boring.
