Looks like M$ is getting desperate to outdo the PS3.

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6157933.html?tag=latestnews;title;3

Upscaling existing games in 720p to 1080p is a horrible idea, not to mention some of them already stuggle to keep soild framerates.

The 360 isnt built to handle 1080p. I just dont know what M$ is trying to accomplish.

If they have barely 30FPS at 720p, it'll be even lower at 1080p. They shouldn't upscale so much.

And to think the 360 was trying to avoid becoming a do all machine.

MS is trying too hard to try and outdo the PS3 (this for one). Notice that MS is really the only one that throws announcements together whenever there is a hint that PS3 or Wii might have something up their sleeve? Sony and Nintendo seem to take any bad press until large events.

I'm saying in general, whenever they get wind of one of the others having something, they usually say they're going to announce something around the same time.

:| Don't say that...it makes you sound kinda stupid.

Framerate problems this early in the 360's life cycle are due to poor optimization and that happens because one of two (possibly both) things happen. Either the developers are lazy, or they simply don't understand the hardware. Hell if DOA 4 (a really beautiful game) can run at 60 fps at 720p, then they can get games to run 30 at 1080p.

IT IS NOT THE XBOX 360's FAULT!

The console is new, developers barely know how to pull anything out of it much less how to optimize games to run smoothly. In time, framerate problems, (unless a dev pushes it too hard in the future) will become non existent. You can quote me on that.

Well, I could argue that the PS3 isn't really built for 1080p either...  :P

You don't have to pay for it... you don't even have to use it.  Me, I plan to use my 17" PC monitor to play 360 games; I wouldn't bother with ultra-high-resolution.  But as a bullet-point for MS to use to compete with hardware $100 more expensive, released a year later?  An upgrade you get for free?  That can even be used on already-released software?

I'm sorry, I don't understand how this can be fairly criticized.  Copying?  BS.  Consoles are small computers, with a tight focus on performance.  Just as you shouldn't feel like your Alienware PC copies from my homebrew machine because it has a DVD-burner, neither should basic features that become commonplace be considered copies, from one console to another.  Adding 1080p support in software is just another way for MS to say that the PS3 is not as special as Sony says it is.  Isn't that what Sony did to Nintendo with its tilt-sensitive PS3 controller?  Because of this move, who knows?  Maybe motion-sense will become the next big thing.  Didn't the original DualShock become 10x better because Sony used Nintendo's idea, the analog thumbstick, and brought it to the PS1?  I don't think the software upscaling in 360 will have that kind of impact, but the principle remains the same.

When the stakes are this high, we can and should expect all the major players to find ways to include each others' standout features as often as they can.  Why do Wii and PS3 have online play?  Is it nothing to do with XBL?  So what?  It works out better for everybody that there was an XBL.  MS raised the bar, everyone is trying to reach it now.  That's a good thing.  Now PS3 is raising the bar for display resolution, and MS is reaching it.  Maybe this invalidates all those comments about how blu-ray is needed for 1080p (clueless comments but there were many made); then again, maybe it doesn't.  Raising the resolution of display always hurts performance, in any hardware setup.  Maybe it's the sort of thing that would work well for simpler games, not so hot for others.  Again, so what?  Ignore the hype, 720p is spectacular for next-gen graphics; no 360 owner will tell you that his games look like crap in "low" hi-def.  It just means that Sony can't say it's got the only pony that can do 1080p.

If I were at MS, I would be grinning ear to ear right now.

Agreed, people really need to figure that out. The same will happen to the PS3....

As unnnecessary as it may be, this is a brilliant move. Sony has been touting the PS3's 1080p or "True HD" capabilities and that its the nly console with that capability, and that was a big advantage. Now, MS has taken that advantage waya from them saying, "Hey, you're not the only one with 1080p". It's brilliant from a marketing prospective.
