They'd be silly not to play with the idea. I would guess the physical nature of the device would be developed in such a way as to play the games on a television, and the iPhone/iPod itself would act more like a supercharged controller with extra physical buttons.

If true it's a bold move saying that all of their touch devices are inferior when it comes to controls

I mean years of the iPod touch and iPhone with the touch ability and now Apple is saying they're all bad for controlling their devices.

You have to wonder how far this is going to go, with the death of Steve Jobs is Apple finally going to start fixing his bad ideas starting with touch controls?

Sure does look like it.

Think of it, years of the Jobs regime and every single complaint about the touch controls were answered with "the touch is the future, the best and only way to have users experience all the iDevices can do"

Now there's a 180 and they're showing a controller to be built in house?

This goes against everything they've said about their devices and worse yet what about all their customers who asked for something other then touch and were told "you're wrong our way is best"?

I can only think that this is the start of Apple starting to fix what Jobs broke there

Are you not familiar with Apple and it's products?

Since Jobs left they've been trying to refine their control for devices, here's one of their latest offerings....

This has very little to do with what you posted or this thread. There's a disconnect here you haven't quite discovered yet.

How about an iphone with a removable controller? Yes there are accessories but they are all horrid. The only way the idea can succeed is if the iphone itself is made with the controller in mind.

Apple can pretty much kill handheld gaming completely by coming up with such an iphone.

The new iPad in particular has a lot more power for developers to play with so releasing a more traditional controller peripheral makes perfect sense for Apple. If they want to start taking even more gaming market share from the console makers, this would be a great way to do it. "Proper buttons" would open the iOS platforms to more innovative game ideas, if the buttons were used in combination with the touchscreen and other inputs.

It's almost like you forgot that gaming is just one function of what iDevices were made to do. A controller peripheral would address hardcore gamers lamenting over a lack of traditional controls. It's not meant to replace touch controls in terms of every other function of the iDevices. The iPad propped up with a physical controller in hand? Sounds more like a portable console/television combo than a handheld gaming experience.

Its just jayson. his "thing" on the boards (since you appear to not know) is to be almost 100% on 75% of the issues, for none of the right reasons. I 100% agree that touch is inferior, and I do think that apple is admitting that touch controls are not as good as physical controls by catering to the gamer's needs

Admission or not, everyone is missing the point: Official controller across unified devices. It's a win regardless. Gaming wasn't always Apples main focus on the iDevices, so it's an admission of nothing. We're still going to be using touch controls to type, to interact with apps, surf the web and do everything else. Honestly, the only time I see myself even using a controller is to play first-person shooter and fighting games, and possibly platforming games. Every other genre handles more than adequately well, and some (like RTS, Racing, point and click adventures etc) actually handle better with a touchscreen. There is no admission to anything other than Apple hears its user-base, and decided to address one thing.

I think it's remarkable how Jaysonguy manages to spread his very own and special brand of stupidity all across all these boards without even a hint of a reaction from the mods and admins.

Sorry for the interruption, Apple guys. Keep doing your thing.

Touch controls work just fine for using an iPad, but there are some games that would be a lot easier to play with a controller.

I'm torn over whether a physical controller would be a good thing or not, I mean yeah it would make fps especially a lot easier to play.. but surely the whole point is mobile gaming and when it gets to the point where you have to carry a controller round with you its going a bit far i think. Saying that I'd prob buy one just for home use anyway:)

It will meet the needs of people who like to play games with buttons i guess but i thought the whole point with the ipad and iphone is that you do everything with your fingers,so then to come out with conventional controller seem's like a odd move,i think this is false but i guess we will find out in june if this is for real or not. I can see it working with an ipad with a smart cover so it stands up straight but then you'd have to have it on a table or floor and basically sit using it like a console or laptop/pc...

This sounds pretty awesome I would definitely buy it but if it's really expensive then...well we will see what the reviews would say. Always thought I would enjoy gaming on my iOS devices a lot more with a controller. Hopefully it does see the light of day.
