CNN reverence.

From the article:

[quote="FORTUNE"]Both sides of the smartphone wars agree that the 25 patents granted Apple (AAPL) on Tuesday contain some powerful legal weapons.

One patent in particular -- No. 8,223,134: "Portable electronic device, method, and graphical user interface for displaying electronic lists and documents" -- stands out.

It encompasses the user interfaces Apple designed for blogging, e-mail, telephone, camera, video player, calendar, browser, widgets, search, notes, maps and most importantly, a multi-touch interface.

"Granted just today, the latest addition to the Cupertino-based tech giant's stable of intellectual property could be the mother of all smartphone software patents," writes Phandroid's Kevin Krause. "The effects could be swift and lethal."

It's basically the series of patents Apple applied for that secure iOS' look and feel, something no company had in 2007 when the iPhone was first released on the world to unleash hell on the unsuspecting industry.

I think Apple's lawyers just had a drink to celebrate, and I think the competition may have skipped the glass for the bottle... If it wasn't ugly before, it'll get ugly now.

Why can't apple just make a better product law suits are just getting stupied now. I hope wp8 does well and apple tries to take on Microsoft with its huge amount of patents and backfires on apple when they are found to infringe multiple ms patents. There is a reason they nver take on goggle directly, they have to many patents. Apple better be careful not to take on Nokia either as they hold far to many mobile patents.

I can't believe you people actually celebrate a company actively attempting to build a monopoly

Building a monopoly? Protecting your own innovations and expecting the competition to come up with their own ideas is building a monopoly? :|

Okay lets see this.

Did nintendo try to block the PS move? It's a much bigger ripoff than android ever was of iOS.

Did youtube try to ban every single video streaming website since it was the one with the original idea?

Did rovio try to ban every single game that copies the fundamental basics of angry birds which mind you are a pretty significant amount of casual smartphone games?

Did rockstar try to ban every game that copied GTA3 which again are a pretty significant number?

Did microsoft try to ban every single shooter which copied the health regeneration system of halo?

Did RIM try to ban nokia qwerty phones that ripped of blackberry?

Are you really trying to say that only apple should have devices with multi-touch input? Thats like saying only RIM should have a phone with a portrait keyboard.

What you guys dont even realise is how much android has done for iphone. You wont be seeing an iphone 4 if not for android. Up until the 3GS apple was always lacking behind in hardware and would still be if not for android. You will also not be seeing a big iphone without android.

Keyboards were standardized methods of input since the birth of computing. Name one company that employed multi-touch capacitive touchscreens as an exclusive method of input before Apple. (Single touch resistive screens are not multi-touch capacitive screens) Microsoft was in deep with the government two decades ago for straight up monopoly.

But apple wasnt the first to make a capacitive device nobody else should be allowed to make a capacitive device other than whoever did it first by your logic.

I am not defending microsoft.

And the most important thing is apple has already reaped the rewards of their innovation they are the highest valued company in the world right now what more can you ask for? In this industry being the first to do something right is in itself the biggest thing, competitors cant just copy over night you know.

This just wreaks of fear on apples part. This is like nintendotrying to patent Mario-esque platformers, or the entire 3d platforming genre. ...or similar to when 2k Sports was making a better football game than madden, and ea decided to just secure the nfl license. For a company like Apple, that stresses technological growth, this ai actually a poor press move IMO.

Exactly.

Apple's actions have shown how broken the US patent system is and it could bring a fundamental change in the system. You know someone somewhere is horribly wrong when apple gets a patent in US which gets flatly rejected as trivial in europe.

industry being ruined confirmed. im not blaming apple for wanting this patent, because they have every right to want it. im blaming whoever let them have this, because its about to get ridiculous.
