This is a nice article I found which very well highlights some of the issues I knew would be present with the new ipad.

http://www.theverge.com/2012/5/26/3019105/retina-display-new-ipad-graphics

Simply put for very demanding games the ipad 3 sacrifices graphical effects and framerates in order to play at that monster resolution.

The worst offender is infinity blade which runs at an upscaled resolution something we have seen being pulled off on PS3 and xbox 360 for quite some time.

Not only the ipad 3 doesnt bring better graphics, it actually takes a step back in certain things. It looks sharper but if the devs wanted they can give the ipad 2 4xAA for getting rid of aliasing if they want to but they seem to prioritize other things for good measure.

The ipad 3 is unquestionably the superior multimedia device but I believe ipad 2 remains the best gaming tablet. It also has much lesser charging time so practically a much better battery life.

In my honest opinion apple went too over board with resolution on the ipad 3. 1600x1200 would have been a pretty good resolution upgrade.

The article puts an emphasis on the preference being subjective. Some people prefer higher resolution at the expense of depth-of-field effects, while others prefer more effects at the expense of a lower resolution. Yet for the hundreds of quality titles that aren't trying to be top-tier console-games, the iPad 3's insane screen still keeps it as a no-brainer.

A lot of those screenshots shown displayed quite a negligible difference, too. I've run Infinity Blade 2 side-by-side an iPad 2 and 3 and I can safely say that it looks much nicer on the newer iPad.

Really doesn't matter anyhow. 9 months from now the iPad 4 will pretty much have all bases covered. ;)

It's nice to see you finally agree that the iPad is the best gaming tablet out in the market. Cheers

But there is a certain compromise which most users wouldnt expect, they would think ipad 3 is everything ipad 2 does and better which is not the case. Given that the ipad 2 is also cheaper puts the new ipad in a strange position.

The differences you see in screenshots is half the story, the framerate is worse as well on new ipad. Yes the next ipad could have the horsepower to justify such a resolution, ipad 3 does not in my opinion.

ipad was always the best gaming tablet, I never said otherwise.

I think a better display is more important than better graphics, and iOS gaming really shouldn't be taken too seriously. It's something you do to kill time.

Is it just me, or are the new iPad screenshots consistently more brown tinted?

The irony here is that the game industry takes the 3DS and Vita less seriously than iOS. ;)

With good reason too, i always said the tablet and phone industry will kill mobile gaming, and its unquestionable the iPad is actually the best tablet money can buy right now. In saying that , i would prefer the iPad 2 with the new 32nm chip instead of the original iPad 2 or the ipad 2012.

I think I would have to for the ipad 2. It is good for a reasonable price and the technology is perfect as it is.

Nope.

How do you figure? Low resolution, poor contrast, and poor color accuracy.

It's not low resolution in my opinion.

Ya contrast is low but the new ipad has exactly the same. ;)

Again colors are fine, am not going to be doing color critical work on an ipad. But ya I suppose I could accept this as a more substantial improvement in the new ipad screen as having better colors has no drawbacks, having an insane resolution really does.

The iphone screen has 50% higher contrast than the ipad, apple really should have tried to improve the contrast. The ipad is bottom of the bunch in the high end tablet game when it comes to contrast and the new ipad didnt change that.

Oh I know. It was the screen quality that kept me from buying the ipad2. The resolution was just too low to read comfortably and use the device as a portable painting/sketchbook. Color accuracy is very, very important and people tend to overlook this aspect in favor of brightness/contrast. It's literally similar to looking at a psp3000 interlaced screen, and then looking at the vita.

Funny how the ipad 2 still has a better screen than the macbook pro. You must also hate the iphone 4S screen since it has pretty bad colors as well right?

I have no need for a smart phone. IMO, it is all relative to what the device is made to be used for. Where did I say I hated anything? I simply said that it was the screen that kept me from buying an iPad, until the recent model. I do not own a MacBook pro, but I can't imagine a 17 in at 1024x768 resolution. Is it really that bad?

The 15" one has 1440 by 900 res and 17" one has 1920x1200. A 17" laptop is hardly a laptop anymore in my opinion but nevertheless the pixel density of the 17" is not any better than the ipad 2.

The worst thing is that it isnt even an IPS screen on the macbook pro.

Agreed, I've bought many games on the app store for my ipad and while some of them are fun, there aren't as many portable/console like games.
