Just curious on some people's opinion regarding Apple's position with it's iOS devices. I own an iPhone and just recently picked up an iPad because I felt like it was about time to invest in one. I play games on my iPhone and they are fun, but playing Real Racing 2 for my iPad has completely blown me away. I couldn't believe something so polished and great looking could be such a great game. I also played Air Supremacy and thought the way you control these games are awesome. With each passing year as the iPad gets more powerful and new games come out how do you think Apple will do? I mean I don't think they'll make a dedicated console, but I really do think some aspects of the iPad as Epic said could be the future of the games industry. It's pretty neat and I think you can make games that will appeal to hardcore fans.

I'm not sure threat is the right word. Maybe the iOS devices represent an evolution or simply a great alternative to conventional gaming.

Haven't tried an iPad yet but I got a 3DS and an iPod at around the same time and I've had way more fun with the iPod.

No way. For me at least, I never play games on my iPad. And playing games with a mouse or controller feels much better than touching a screen. The only thing I think It will do is pick up the real "non gamer" people. The ones who were never really into consoles or computer games. And I don't think the real gamers would desert the console or computer for the iPad since you don't get anything near the same gaming experience on a iPad than on a tv and console.

Better as a supplement than as a replacement. It might stop some people from buying the alternatives, but I don't see it killing any of them. That would just be wishful thinking on some peoples' parts.

Yes mobile is a legitimate threat to the games industry. It's obvious this is cookie cutter distruptive technology. First it will grab the handheld market (doing it now) and next will dive into console land. Hell Baulder's Gate was just announced for the Ipad. I can also see why ppl are upset over this.. and barely even believe such atrosity as this. But it's par for the course and yes I beleive tablets/phones will have MS, Sony, and Ninty on their knees begging please in due time.

I don't think so, you can't get that full experience on an ipad, it just isn't the same. Getting that quick hit on the bus or something will never really be a threat to a full experience you get from a console or pc game. If that was going to happen the PSP or DS wouldve killed it long ago.

Thanks for the input, I was just curious because there are certain things I think the iPad does very well, like Air Supremacy and Real Racing 2 are beautiful to navigate with the iPad. It is extremely difficult thought to play games with an onscreen buttons and directional pad.

*facepalm* No... just no. iPads and tablets will have no way to take over the gaming industry at all. They are for casual gamers and they suck. As a hardcore gamer such as myself, I choose consoles (PS3 and Xbox 360) and PC. Hardcore gamers will not play tablets and never will. Tablets will be no way as powerful as gaming PCs and consoles.

Ipad is a "part" of the gaming industry and so is the iphone and other smartphones that can play games.

I don't think the iPad is a threat to gaming it's self, but the way they do things is. And it's all starting with the vita. Cheap games, but have to pay extra for everything, downloadable games only

I like to look at the iPad as a secondary system. Something that can supplement your gaming needs on the go. It will never replace game consoles. I have to say they are some great games like Infinity Blade, and Real Racing. RC2 blew me away to be honest, and you are right the iPad does some good things like racing games where you can steer the car. Neat stuff. Also like the mirroring and being able to play it on the TV.

Im just amazed how the mobile phone technology has grown. If you would tell me 3 years ago when I first started playing uber laggy 3D games on my Xpress Music 5800 that old PC titles like GTA III and Max Payne would be playable on Mobile devices in HD and lagfree I would tell you youre crazy. The PSP was a evolution back then to have 3D Games in your pocket, now iOS Devices are repeating the same. Cant wait to see what they are going to invent next.

It's not a threat; it's just another part of the gaming industry.

I'd say it's a growing threat to handheld gaming for sure. Apple's got the premier mobile digital download service and the largest library. Now startups are popping up, headed up by some of the industries best and brightest (and most successful) dedicated to delivering AAA quality games on iOS platforms. Interesting years ahead.

I agree, and if Moga can get Micromon off the ground, Nintendo is going to have a serious problem on its hands IMO, if the game is really good.

Phones and tablets are a real threat to portable consoles but not to home consoles. There will always be a market for games made for the big screen. I can see phones becoming to very big problem to likes of the psp and ds. Gameloft's mobiles games are now amazing, many look better than ps2 games and I bet the Tegra 3 phones could push things close to ps3/x360. I'm not convinced it will be tablet that will be the big threat though, to me they are to big to comfortably hold, phones on the other hand are pretty much perfect to use like a game controller and a nice 4-5" screen is just the right size, something that could put game consoles at risk though is being able to play your phone game on you tv. Touch screen controls are the main limitation of phone and tablet games. Racing games work awesome but shooters are not so ideal.

I can have some fun on my new Ipad. I enjoy Real Racing 2 HD and Pinball Arcade and Infinity Blade 2. When the games play well with the touch screen controls the Ipad can be a fun gaming device. But i still have room for gaming on my Vita and 3DS with games and control features that can be superior than Ipad. There is room for all the systems and i dont see IOS gaming as a threat to those other systems. Yes i can get games cheaper on Ipad, but that does not always mean they are any good or worth the money even if they are cheap. I would gladly pay for a expensive game on Ipad if a developer put the time and effort to make a "real" game that actually justified the expense. But the game would have to really work exceptionally well within the confines of the touch display, or otherwise it would be a failure. And maybe thats the problem. Maybe the touch display is too limiting for a developer to really put forth the money and time into a AAA exclusive title for the Ipad platform?
