Well-known Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster reported findings for the annual cell phone survey.

The results, linked here from CNN Money, said that 65% of respondents reported their next smartphone would be Apple's iPhone. The other findings can be seen in the link.

Though the survey isn't something I'd call exhaustive, the percentages seen in the results are miles away from the margin of error.

Thoughts? I'm not too surprised, honestly.

It is a big call, i'm not sure it will do that well personally, the world is now saturated with mobile smart phones. i don't think people will happily abandon their contracts just to buy a new iPhone etc. If it does get 80 million even in the first month i shall salute that company.

Really don't get how you determine"80 million sold" with a sample size of only 400. Especially when we know Android users makeup 50+% of the smartphone market and Apple at 33%. The data is ass backwards.

Disregarding the whole survey but it is no mystery that iphone 5 is going to be a huge hit. All apple needs to do is show a 4" screen and everyone will be wowed like they did with iphone 4. Does this mean iphone will have more marketshare than android? Not happening!! Will apple continue to make a killing with profits? No doubt they will and I cant see anyone touching apple profits for a while.

Btw how much has the 4S sold to date? I couldnt find it all I see is total iphone sales does apple not reveal individual lifetime sales of the different models?

Would like to note that Android's "marketshare" is shapeless at best, which is why developer interest in the platform is eroding. Only a single digit percentage of Android users are currently using the latest two updates. Android is so fragmented, its "marketshare" numbers aren't something developers praise, but are confused and having difficulty with. What's more telling of the success of the iPhone is that it's one phone that is eating away at a collective Android marketshare thats populated with a majority of actual power users and enterprise than the majority of Android owners who shelled out $50 for a phone with Android versions still pre-dating 2010. You know something is wrong when Android forumers bicker amongst themselves for "getting the wrong Android phone." If you have to purchase the most expensive and specific Android phone just to enjoy its full benefit, then you've pretty much resigned to exactly why unification and tightly controlled/supported devices are that much better. You may as well say Android would be more successful if other manufacturers didn't produce dirt cheap handsets with poor support and features that just fragment the ecosystem. That's pretty much admitting why the iPhone has always been and still is the best phone.

iOS doesnt fulfill my needs of usability and features, that alone is enough for me to buy whatever else is the other option.

Yes I agree the element of choice has reduced for a rational buyer due to how bad OEMs have been regarding updates. While sticking to google nexus elimiates the choice but it's hell of a lot cheaper than iphone whilst not being an inferior phone.;)

You can buy a galaxy nexus unlocked for $350 and you can be assured it will be supported for a long long time. If everyone starts buying the nexus series I am sure the other companies are going to start being much better with updates so it wont kill choice if anything it will increase it.

What the marketshare of android has done is give it an app store thats very close now to apple, even if it isnt making as much money for devs they cant seem to ignore it. You know what? There is an indirect benefit of having your app on android as well and thats word of mouth. One person pirates a game on an android device, recommends it to a friend with iphone who then purchases it = dev profits. I have said before the problem with android first and foremost is the amount of piracy.

You can't make a conclusion on that based on the results of 400 people.
