There will be a conference call for the league's Competition Committee to discuss the issue of the massive video screens at the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, according to a league source, after they were struck repeatedly by punters in warmups Friday night, and also during the preseason game between Dallas and Tennessee.

There will be communication between those parties and with the Cowboys as well to try to resolve the issue. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones balked initially at having to change anything with the boards, as the league already signed off on the matter pre-construction. Given the problems this could pose, however, I'd expect the league to work hard to correct the issue and get the screens raised to where they no longer have as much chance of interfering with the game itself.

Pretty sad a play had to be re-played because of a scoreboard.  I guess that's what $1 Bill gets ya these days.

Ray Guy hit the video screen above the Louisiana Superdome at the 1976 Pro Bowl. After Guy's kick, the screen was raised from 90-feet to 200-feet above the field.

From 90 to 200?  Pretty big jump.

Normally I'd say leave it where it is, but a team can run down the clock by repeatedly kicking it into the board, so I guess they have to move it or change the rule.

haha i think its funny just because after spending all that money they couldn't at least have some punters test some high punts? I mean come on they had to know it could be possible with how low it is.

Good, I'm glad the NFL is looking into this. I can't imagine how it was ever figured that placing a giant screen only 90 feet off the field would be a good idea.

This just in, the NFL rule is 85 feet above the field.

I change my mind *again* they have no right to mandate this without officially changing the rules.

Then I guess The Commish will just change the rule and make the Cowboys comply to it.

Time goes back on the clock if it hits the scoreboard, so it would be impossible to run the clock out that way.

And I agree, the NFL should change the rule if they want the screens moved up.

Haha, did anyone see Jerry's response to moving it up? "No one punts the ball straight down the middle unless they're dumb, you punt to the left or right." It wasn't exactly that, but it was something along those lines.

You should check that, wally.  I've read many articles that state when a play is re-done the time that expires stays off the clock.

I'll look it up, but I believe the ones I have read said that the clock goes back, like it never happened.

EDIT: Ahh, looks like you are correct. The clock does not reset.

Agreed, move it 30 feet and nobody will hit it again and it won't be an issue.  What's $2 more million on a $1 billion stadium anyways?

LOL! I like that. They will have to move it unless you want punters hitting the scoreboard all year.

NFL sets rules for video-board plays

Basically, it's a do-over in Dallas.

The NFL has ruled that the down will be replayed and clock will be reset if a football hits the massive video display board that hangs over the field at Cowboys Stadium.

Perhaps the key piece of the ruling, issued Friday morning, is that it is only for this season. The league can review it after the season.

Well the league is probably going to have to pay some of all of the money to have it raised if that is what they eventually want to have happen since Jerry Jones not only met league specifications, he exceeded them.
