If you are above the line, you can still win. This also means you will follow a different set of rules than the others. I'll explain that in a minute. If you are below the line, please don't let that stop you from playing.

Alright, here are the rules for Super Bowl Pick'em, copied directly from last year's rules thread.

You need to read these:

- The score you get is based almost entirely on your prediction for the game's score.
- Depending on a correct pick and how close you are to the actual score, you can gain anywhere between 0-10 points.
- A correct pick results in a minimum of 5 points. Guessing the score correctly will gain you an extra 5 added to your minimum. If your prediction is off by 1-4 points, you get an extra 4. 5-9 is an extra 3. 10-14 is an extra 2, and 15-20 is 1 extra point.
- An incorrect pick can also result in points, though your predicted score will have to be closer. It will also have to be a close game for you to get these points. If your prediction is 2-4 points away from the actual score, you will get 5 points. 5-7 will get 4 points, 8-10 will get 3 points, 11-13 will get 2 points, and 14-16 will get 1 point.
- I want you to post a reason with your pick. For one, it makes things more interesting. Secondly, it helps us know what you are thinking. It seperates a great pick from just a random shot in the dark.
- In the event of a 1st place tie, the winner will be decided by total number of Upset Specials hit this season.

Okay, this part is very important:
- If you are below the contention line, you will post your pick in the designated thread(this thread), like normal. SB Sunday at noon is the cutoff point. It will be strictly enforced.
- For the 8 of us still in contention to win, we will make our picks elsewhere, in secret. In the interest of fair-play, we'll be sending our picks to an unbiased middleman: JackBurton. Once he has the pick, the predicted score, and the reasoning behind it from each contender, he'll post them in the Pick'em thread for us.

So here you go, the final pick of the season. Let's do this thing:

Super Bowl XLII
New England vs NY Giants
NE: -- NYG: --

Explain(at least 2 sentences):
------------------
------------------
------------------

Another note, in the event that billy wins, which is very possible, I can't give you a major prize. You just aren't active enough in the Union and I don't want to waste my money on someone who only comes out of his rock for one post a week. You can have a sig or something, but nothing with monetary value. This may also apply to LINKloco, but his chances of winning are far lower.

Super Bowl XLII
New England vs NY Giants
NE: 38 NYG: 21

Well the Giants have been riding a nice hot streak but this 2 week break is going to slow that down and let the massive weight of the Super Bowl hang on all the first timers. While the Patriots have been there done that many veterans will be pumped for this game and ready, with 18-0 and one game left the one game the Patriots have been waiting for since last year they are not going to mess this one up. Belichick will draw up the best game plan and make the right adjustments and with Brady in a dome look for some amazing passes. Eli and the Giants are good but there offense cant keep up with the Pats and their defense cant stop the Pats.

Its the Super Bowl and well the Patriots do what they have to to win!

NE is been getting way TOO lucky this season and someone needs to wake up and realize that. Giants came very close last time, expept last time they were at home and the G-men do better on the road.

New England needs to show that not only can they lock the super bowl, and history is a matter of fact, but they also need to show that they won't win by just a touch down. They NEED TO PLAY IRON CURTIN D. As the old saying goes, "Defense wins championships." And NE has to play both good D and O. good luck New England.;)

I must admit, I have been impressed by the New York Giants and they're great postseason run, and the fact they managed to score 35 points against the Patriots in week 17. However, it is hard to deny that the Patriots are almost unstoppable. They truly are one of the greatest ever: them and they're 18-0 record has nothing to do with an easy schedule, unlike the 1972 Miami Dolphins. Look at all the team's they've beaten this season: the Colts, Cowboys, Steelers, Redskins, Giants, Jaguars, the Chargers twice and a rising Browns team who could've easily been in the playoffs. The fact is, the Patriots are real. The only thing that concerns me about picking them is Tom Brady with his cast. If his status worsens before the Super Bowl, I may change my pick. But at the moment, I take the Patriots. I believe that the Patriots will jump up to an early 14-3 lead after the first, before the Giants storm back and tie the game 17-17 at halftime. The Patriots will score a touchdown in the 3rd quarter, with the Giants adding a field goal, and the score being 24-20 after the third quarter. The Patriots will add a touchdown with only ten minutes left in the forth quarter and make it 31-20. The Giants then string a strong drive, and get a touchdown, but miss the 2-point conversion with seven minutes left, making it 31-26. The Patriots get it back, but are forced to punt. The Giants string a long drive, and take it to the red zone, but a strong goal line stand and Thomas will break up Eli Manning on a Forth and Goal, giving the Patriots a win. Actualy, I doubt any of that will happen, but if it does, what an epic Super Bowl.

This was a very tough choice for me considering I have picked against NE multiple times this year and been wrong(Indy and Jacksonville come to mind) I have good reason to pick against them again. The Giants are on a roll, who besides their own fans thought they would get this far? As the playoffs started most people were already saying Packers/Pats, but the Giants have proved them wrong. They have picked against this whole postseason, yet have managed to make it to the ultimate stage thanks to determination and great games from key players. Eli Manning has gone from the heavily criticized younger brother of Peyton, to outdoing his brother and having a chance to ruin the Pats dream season. Will the Giants actually win? Maybe not, but I like their chances.

The reason is pretty simple why I picked the score to be 34-31 New England, just because the Pats are going to, kick a last second Field Goal, I also am seeing this whole Tom Brady ankle thing as a trick to get into the minds of the Giants.

So why did I pick the New England Patriots, for the simple reason that I think that even though I don't like them I still think that they are the best this year, especally with how good Brady and Moss work as a team, I just have got to go with New England they are the best and may be the best for a really long time.

to everyone who says that the Giants will win because 'they're on a roll' and 'play well on the road', well you logic is flaud for this SB, they're both on the road for number 1 and guess what the Pats have been on a 18 game roll trumping the roll the G-Men are on. Seriously am I the only one who finds this logic for picking the G-Men to win completely flaud!

I agree there, an 18 game roll is by far better. But no one means to diminish the Patriots' undefeated record when they say that the Giants are hot right now, it's just a compliment to the Giants.

Super Bowl XLII
New England vs NY Giants
NE: 31 NYG: 27

My choice is based solely on a Offense vs. Defense situation.

The new england's offense is pass first which isn't the giants strength. The Giants defense is more suited to stopping the run. The Giants will need to blitz brady, a lot, even then they'll probably only get hurries because the pat's have a great O-Line. Unfortunately, that means they will be giving up a lot of short completions because they won't have enough players to cover the patriot receivers. Their corners will have a really hard time covering welker, moss, stallworth, and gaffeny. The Giants best hope on defense is to slow down the game and force new england into a more rhythmic team instead of an explosive team because there is no way they can stop the pats offense.

The giant's offense will need to do the exact opposite. The Patriots weakness on defense is hobbs and their linebackers. The pat's linebackers are old meaning they have experience but less agility. The Giants will have an average passing game but i expect a few hail marys to burress. The patriots D-line isn't nearly as good as its o-line so I expect most of the pressure on manning will come from the LBs.

Explain(at least 2 sentences):
First off I would like to point out that i am not a fan of either team. But if i had to choose it would be the patriots i would pick because it is the "smart pick". Also IMO i would like to see a team complete an undefeated march in my lifetime and this is obviously to this point in my life the best chance to see one. I think that just because the giants played tough against NE the first time and have been obviously verry impressive in the postseason they will keep it close in the game. IN the end though brady Pulls it through but It will not be the golden boy as SB MVP it will be Breakout Wideout WES WELKER who will win the MVP with 12 catches 150 yards and 2 touchdowns.

The highest scoring team in a 16 game NFL season will score points. In order to be beaten the other team MUST outscore them. The Giants played well in the regular season matchup, however they collapsed mainly due to the Patriots coaching staff increasing the pressure on Eli Manning with blitzing. The main question then is whether or not Eli truly has learned to cope with all manner of pressure/exposure due that game and his playoff experience in the snow at Lambeau in the biggest game of his life. There won't be snow but now he is in an environment he could never have prepared for or imagined...the Super Bowl. I think he has learned and that he will flourish in the largest 1hr show in the world. But then again they could get smooshed. I cna't wait to see this game!!!

Super Bowl XLII
New England vs NY Giants
NE: 17 NYG: 20

I like to think of this game as the 2000 Superbowl between the St. Louis Rams Hot QB Kurt Warner, and The New England Patroits with a young Tom Brady, who are heavy underdogs.

This time Eli Manning is the young QB, Tom Brady is the vetern. The Patroits have one of the best Offenses coming in, and have experience in the superbowl. The Patroits are compariable to the Rams, Two great WR's Welker, Moss (Holt, Bruce) good RB but not really compariable Marooney (Faulk), Top QB's and MVP's Brady (Warner). The Giants are the newcomers, at 10-6, have done well as road warriors, and have a great defense, (Patroits had a great defense alsoback in 2000). They just upset one of the top teams in the NFC (Packers) just as the Patroits upset the Steelers.

All the Giants need to do is press the recivers, and the Safets cover the top to block a long pass, While the two lineman Umenoria (Sp?) and Straham pressures Brady. And on offense the Giants need to run the ball, to open up the passing game, this is what the Giants need to do to win the game.

Eli Manning Superbowl MVP 19-27 passing for 275 yards and 2 TD's my Prediction.

So it's the Giants and the Patriots in this year's Super Bowl. The Boston/New York rivalry continues into the biggest game of the year. The Patriots just continue to make history each week and the Giants just continue to surprise people. You got the "hobbled" Tom Brady and Eli "I'm not Peyton" Manning going at it. You got the Giant's great pass rush against the Patriots pretty good offensive line. You got Brandon Jacobs going up against an aging, but smart group of linebackers. Just so many great matchups, I'm not even 50.1% sure that the Patriots will win their fourth Super Bowl in just seven years. But I got to make a pick and I just cannot see the Patriots laying an agg in this one and ruin their perfect and historic season. So I'm picking the Patriots to win the Super Bowl.

And I was kidding about the 50.1% sure comment...LOL

Super Bowl XLII:

New England Patriots vs. New York Giants

New England 35, New York 27

Really, does anyone really want to bet actual money that New York will win? Yeah, I thought so. New England outmans them on offense ever single way. Their O Line should be able to contain the great NY D Line. The Runningbacks should outman most of the Giants linemen. The Receivers will throw around the Giants secondary. And then, there's Tom Brady. If no one's waving their arm downfield, he's just gonna dump it off. Usually, up near the sticks. The Giants held them last time, but I doubt that Bill Belichick would have just stepped back and just play like they did last time. He's gonna go at it a lot more with the running game. Laurence maroney has been at it so far this post season, and he will be utilized well. Just like against San Diego. Just like against Jacksonville. While you see him running around trucking and juking people out of their shoes, dreadlocks flying everywhere, Tom Brady's 6'4" frame is throwing it around to Moss's 6'4" frame. Not to mention Welker, Faulk, and Stallworth. The only way the Giants can win is by running it around to the outside with their backs and try to tire down The Pats old defense. Eli may also struggle against the pressure. His cogs up front might be able to keep Seymour, Wilfork, and Warren in check (Yet even then, I feel that matchup is a toss up), but then, Mike Vrabel comes running at you from the outside. Rodney Harrison comes running at you. While the O Line is doubling (They should be) one or two of the linemen, those guys just come in and disrupt Eli. If new England doesn't win, after doing that, then I guarantee you. Hell will freeze over, and it will snow in Brazil on February 3rd... And Brazil is currently in Summer.

Because they were originally the Boston Patriots and played in Fenway Park & Harvard Stadium... They changed their name to New England after moving outside the city limits to Foxborough into the newly built (1971) Schaefer Stadium. LINK

Several teams (Dallas, Detroit, Miami, Los Angeles) moved outside of their city limits in the 70's & 80's for new stadiums but kept their original names. The Cowboys aren't in Dallas, they're in Irving, TX. The new Cowboys Stadium will be in Arlington, TX., mid-way between Dallas & Ft. Worth.

Explain:
Warning! Unedited stream of consciousness follows...

We've been reminded that the 72 Dolphins were the underdog in SB VII. Not only were the Skins considered a more battle-tested opponent from the superior Conference, few (if any) expected the Dolphins to win and finish 17-0. No precedent had been set. House money. Not so for the Patriots.
In what is likely to be the most-watched SB of all-time, the world is expecting them to win. A loss will be viewed as a catastrophic failure. A wasted season. From immortality to the punch-line of a joke w/in roughly 3 1/2 hrs... In time, they'll be reduced to a stat geek's trivia question.

That said, if Pats close the deal- no one can question their accomplishment. No team in 35 years has faced this type of pressure (plus a controversy) for an entire season... keeping it's poise, executing under said pressure and finding a way to win the close games. Going undefeated. 19-0. The Pats will not only be on the block with the Phins, they'll own all the houses on it and be collecting the rent.

If the Giants expect to win, they'll have to embrace the notion of being called "cheaters" too -- forever remembered as the most physical, dirtiest team ever to play in a SB; willing to accept multiple personal fouls in order to achieve their primary objective... hitting Brady early, often and after the whistle- forcing him to exit the game, preferably in the first half, on a stretcher. If not, and Brady plays the entire game, Giants get blown-out.

The only other scenario in which the Giants can pull off an upset -- is if the pressure of 19-0 season finally takes its toll, and the Pats channel the NFC Championship game "choke" of the 1994 Cowboys, losing three turnovers in the first quarter and dig themselves a 21-0 hole... opening the door for the Giants to unleash a (clock-killing) Brandon Jacobs 30-carry beat-down on an aging LB corps.

Too few in the media (that I've heard) have mentioned that week 17's encounter would not have been as close if not for the foolish penalty which forced the Pats to KO from the parking lot (15 yd line) allowing for a much easier than usual 74yd TD return by Hixon. That's not going to happen again...

Hate on Belichick all you want fellas, but the harsh reality is as follows: Give Bill two weeks to prepare and not only will his team beat yours, but he can take your team and beat his (as Keith Jackson used to always say back in the day.)

Either way, I hope all of you enjoy this game... bc no matter the outcome, history will be made today!

The "Double Secret Ballot" entries, presented unedited, in the order which they were received:

Like Wally said to do, here is my pick. I did this last year, so good luck on keeping all of these together. Anyway, on to my pick.

NY Giants vs. Patriots

Score: NY: 24 NE: 30

Reasoning: I have no love for the Patriots this season besides the fact I had Tom Brady on one of my fantasy teams and Randy Moss on the other. However, this is one of the best teams, and possibly the best team, I have ever seen play. I would love to see the Giants win this game, but my brain is telling me to the pick the Pats because of their superior offense and a defense, while older than most, is very smart and will not give up the big play without something really bad happening. They will go 19-0 this season and show they are the greatest team in history and making Mercury Morris finally shut his mouth.

This is HumanTorch101's pick, just in case you forget. HumanTorch101

New England vs. NY Giants

Well, I'm basically making this pick assuming HT and billy pick NE. I feel I have a better probablity assuming they pick the Pats and I can make up the points easier here then trying to get the score correctly.

Super Bowl XLII
New England vs N.Y. Giants
NE: 31 NYG: 24

The Patriots will win because they have Tom Brady; boot or no boot, bad ankle, good ankle; he'll be ready to play, he'll be good to go. The Giants will make it interesting, but I don't think Eli Manning can continue this Peyton-like performance for so long. He'll play his heart out and he'll make Giant fans feel proud, now that he has shown that he has improved his game, but the Pats are just too good. It will be a close game, just like in week 17, but on a neutral field, the Pats will complete their perfect season and Brady will be the Super Bowl MVP. I know I sound like a Pats fan (I'm not, even though I do live in NE) but they can't win this many games in a row and break this many records and not win the big game; nothing against the G-men, who have been the hottest team for the past month and then some.

Heres my Super Bowl pick.

Patriots 35, Giants 28

There is no doubt the Patriots are the dynasty of this decade. And what do dynasties do? They win Super Bowls. The Patriots have such high talent in offense, defense, and coaching with experience. The Giants only have a handful of Super Bowl experienced veterans, that will have an effect on the outcome of this game. I expect an extremely good game for New York's defense, but New England still pulls it off.

Giants 35 Patriots 34- Giants win.

Yes, I know this is different from my pick on the front page. However, I'm more then certain that HT is picking the Patriots to win and I am more then 5 points behind him. There's no way I can win if I pick the same as him, so this is why I have taken the Giants. Going for the win! Oh and Burton, you're still a dick. :D

Here's my pick.

Super Bowl XLII
New England vs NY Giants
NE: 27 NYG: 28

Explanation: This late in the season, the Patriots linebackers are roughed up. Expect to see Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw exploiting them all day, escpecially late. Jacobs can pound it at least 20 times, Bradshaw should run it 10 times and can break 2 or 3 big plays after they're worn down. Stick to that strategy, rough up Randy Moss like they did last time, and keep that pressure coming, all of which they can do well, and this game is their's for the taking.

And let's be honest, I expect HT to go the safe route and take the Pats, so the only way to defend my crown as Undisputed Pick'em Champ is to pray for a Giant upset.

Posted separately (execute this infidel! :D ), included as a recap:

Super Bowl XLII
New England
vs NY Giants
NE: 31 NYG: 20

The NY Giants have picked the right time to get hot and get on a roll finding themselves in the Super Bowl, but is it enough? No. The Patriots are even on a bigger roll seeking the perfect season to go 19-0 with a Super Bowl win. I see nothing stopping what the Patriots have been doing all year and that is winning.LINKloco

[QUOTE="kalabo10688"] ...why does everyone associate the Patriots with boston when there the New England patriots...not boston....I know already but there based in foxboro..they'll still call new england patriots freediro

Worth.

also there are also Bills, Giants, and Jets fans all across the New England are, it just happens Boston is its largest fan base!

The only reason G-men abd jets dont play in nyc is because of construction and conjuestion issue

that one main facts the msg try to use when the jets where going to build a new stadium in manhattan

do ever mention the bills in ny sports...they dont even deserve be on the same page with this year jets

You can still pick, I just won't bother to tally your points, for 2 reasons:

1) Like you said, you missed all of the other weeks. It's a waste of my time.
2) The deadline was noon.

Super Bowl XLII
NY Giants OVER the Pats
NE: 28 NYG: 31

I think the Giants candefinitelyscore on the Pats. They have a solid two headed running game and Eli has been coming into his own. The question is can't the Pats offense be stopped (or rather limited) particularly in the second half. I'm not so sure that this isn't more of a pick from the heart then the head, but go GIANTS!

At this point, it's either HT or Geaux. The Giants would need 2 TDs in order for me to win.
