With Ben's accident yesterday I've heard a lot of people criticizing the helmet law that was suspended in Penn. I was wondering what everyone here thought.

I personally feel that government intrudes enough with our daily lives. We don't need laws to tell people to wear a helmets or seat belts, if you don't want to for whatever reason you shouldn't have to. At the rate we are going its going to be illegal to smoke in your own house, and if you don't put sunscreen on your kid that will be abuse.

There should be a law, but like all laws, some people still won't follow them. It's like wearing your seatbelt. Some people just don't bother.

Those laws are passed for the well-being of the general public, for their safety.  There are many laws designed to keep the people safe.  That's why we have stop signs.  So yes, motorcycle riders should be forced to wear helmets.

And to make this topic a little more involved with the NFL, what does everyone think of Dangerous Activity Clauses is player contracts?
I have a hard time supporting those though.  Sure it may end up hurting the team, but you wouldn't tell a waiter he can't go skiing in his week off.

Yeah I think wearing helmets should be a law...it's just common sense to wear one.

I can see both sides of this argument. Someone said the helmet law is about our safety and compared it to having stop signs. The difference there is that if someone runs a stop sign or a red light they are putting others at harm and not just themselves. With wearing a helmet your are only putting yourself at risk. It is for that reason that it should be optional. There are many things that are allowed that are dangerous. If someone wants to put themselves at risk without it affecting others who's to say they can't do it.

Stop signs are not a good comparison. I can't think of when someone else wearing a helmet or a seat belt save me from getting hurt. However I can remember three or four times this morning that stop signs stopped me from getting into an accident. When you are putting yourself at risk, thats your bissness.

I don't have a problem with dangerous activity causes. When ever you accept a job you are agreeing to the terms of employment. Your employer has every right to put limitations on what they see fit. If your a baseball player and you like your beard and long hair then don't play for the Yankees. But if your willing to agree to the terms (shave and a hair cut) then play ball.

Okay, you're right stop signs aren't a very good comparison.  My point was that many laws are passed just to keep people safe.

basically the govt is finding more ways to take as much freedom away as possible.  is it common sense to wear a helmet?  yeah, but who the f#ck are you to tell me what common sense is?  is it common sense to use a condom whilst banging your mom? definately.  but maybe i want the full pleasure.

the govt needs to stop telling us what is the law.  let people be their own boss.

I think he's trying to say, people need to be responsible for thier own actions. We don't need to be micro managed by government.

I think it should.

Cause so many people get hurt or die in those accidents so it should be a law.

Magic Johnson got AIDS, they didn't make a law that everyone has to wear a rubber before the test comes back. You make your decisions and you live with them, thats life.

Magic Johnson never got AIDS.  He got HIV.  There's a difference.

I do think they should have those clauses in the players contract's because of the fact that they have HUGE amounts of money invested in them. A waiter, on the other hand, gets paid if he shows up, if he doesn't he probably won't get paid. I think the money difference is the only reason they should be able to tell their players what off the field activities they can do (hazardous stuff at least).

I also think it should be a law in every state to wear helmets. It's just a safety issue.
