Has anyone bought the new "100 CLASSIC BOOKS" that's just now turned up in North America? It's a cartridge that turns the DS into an e-book reader, and also has 100 classic books in it.

Here's my other question for you. I posted earlier that at least two websites I know of allow you to upload epub books to the site and then read any book in your mobile device's browser. This works perfectly in the DSi and XL browser (Bookworm works best, requiring almost no tweaking). i can do this for free. So what would be the advantage of buying 100 Classic Books? I understand that it has realistic "page turning" effects. But is it really important to people that they create the illusion of turning a page? Why?

convenience? For having all those books on a cartridge. Besides not every person out there knows or cares that they can use the browser to view the books.

I'd also imagine using the DSi's browser is much more of a strain on the battery, whereas the game would probably last longer

Could be. A couple of other points also occurred to me. For instance, someone who has a DS Lite or even DS Classic might not have a browser, and they could use this. Also, I haven't figured out any way to read more than one chapter in the browser when away from an Internet connection. So for longterm reading, when you don't have a Wifi connection, the cartridge would be better. And apparently, there are some bonus features (special sound effects, a suggest-a-book feature that tries to mat ch your personality with a book you'll like, etc.)

Wouldn't using the browser use up even more of the screen space, making for a harder read? Regardless, I'm sure most people who'd buy this don't even know about your method/work-around. Or maybe people who still don't have wi-fi?

Not the one I'm using now. it's http://bookworm.oreilly.com/ . If you go there and click "mobile version," then once you click on your book that you're reading, the entire top and bottom screens are filled with the text of the book, in a single column, sized according to the font size that feels most comfortable to you. I have pretty bad vision and it's extremely comfortable reading a book there for me.I even mastered the "page turning." I got tired of scrolling all the time, so I'd read from top to bottom, and then just two clicks of the right arrow takes the next line exactly to the top of the screen again......Read to the bottom, two right clicks and again, your next line is exactly at the top.

Interestingly, some simple features Nintendo could add to the DSi (like a text/pdf reader) would completely negate that cartridge as well as online based book readers. Just download a text or PDF version of your out of copyright book of your choice and you're good to go. That or someone needs to port GoodReader to DSiWare, stat.

TOTALLY agree....and I wouldn't be surprised if something like this is included in the 3DS, since Nintendo is talking about having magazines and newspapers provide content for it. Still, the big XL screen would make for a better ebook reader. Ahh well.....I'll settle for my browser-based method, I suppose.

By the way, the DSi has a big advantage, to me, over reading books on the Kindle or iPad: Its clam-shell design. Great for kicking back in bed or on the couch, lying down, and setting the book down on your chest while you read.......heh heh.

One site I sometimes like go when I'm bored is fanfiction.net

They have ahuge community of user created stories on about every movie, topic, event, video game, and manga existing. It's really crazy, but easy to use.

I like paper books better. But I thought I saw Bram Stoker's Dracula in this collection, not sure though, but that makes it worth the money.

The didn't do a very good job on it. There's like 3 words per page... too-large font and unnecessarily wide word spacing. I guess they have to cater to DSs of all sizes and people who can't see well, but I might have considered using it only if they'd filled out some of that empty page space and halved the font size.

yeah I don't read ebooks. But do you get to download more books or something for the 100 classic books or could someone post a link to the 100 books

I just bought it, well it was a bargain, on sale for $12 AUD.

I guess it's useful when you don't have internet signal, plus it's a nice collection and it's all in one place, and it's neat and well-presented. Plus you can bookmark what you're reading.

I totally, TOTALLY understand the sentiment about preferring paper books. But in my case, I was a voracious book reader for whom reading indoors became more and more difficult because of my deteriorating vision. A backlit screen on something like the DSi makes it possible for me to read books again.
