I'm thinking of buying myself a 2DS/3DS/New 3DS but I'm afraid that I may not play it after the initial excitement wears off due to the types of games it normally plays. It seems like the 3DS is dominated by RPGs, puzzle based games, and fast reaction twitch games.

I'm not into puzzle based games at all, since being a mathematician I already have more than my fair share of puzzles to deal with. For that matter I also wouldn't want games that involve a lot of thinking either like strategy games (I remember Advance Wars being a lot of fun but I don't want to think that much anymore at this stage of my life).

I don't like twitch reaction games that stress you out like the brutally difficult flappy birds that came out on smartphones, so I don't think I will enjoy games like Super Mario Bros.

I don't like RPGs because I still haven't managed to figure out the whole concept of RPGs. The only RPG I enjoyed was Pokemon but that's about it and buying a 3DS just for that isn't worth it.

I do like immersive games that make you feel like the charachter for a while. For example I loved LA Noire and Operation Flashpoint on my Xbox 360 because you feel like you're the charachter that you're playing and it just ends up being supercool. One game that I would probably buy would be Luigi Mansion since I do enjoy adventure games.

I know there are awesome games on the 3DS but I feel that maybe they're not the games that I would enjoy and that I would be better served just buying more Xbox games. Do you think a Nintendo handheld would be a good choice for me?

Games that you may like.

Resident Evil Revelations, A link Between Worlds, Ocarina of Time, StarFox, Luigi Mansion, Animal Crossing, Code of Princess, Mario kart, 3D land, Mario Golf, Pilotwings. Plus others. Never heard of fast reaction twitch games on the 3DS. SSB is a fighting game.

Then you get a 3DS, you can also play hundreds of games that came out for the DS last gen. But yes, the 3DS does have quite a few JRPGs, don't know about puzzles games though.

So, no puzzle, strategy, RPG, or "twitch" games like Super Mario Bros? What are you left with? Driving and sports games and slow, easy adventure games. Hmmm....

I'll second Resident Evil Revelations, Animal Crossing, Pilotwings, and Mario Golf. I'd also say to look into the upcoming Fantasy Life, although there will be some RPG elements to it. Tomodachi Life would fall into the virtual pet territory, although with people, not sure how you feel about those. The Lego games?

For 3DS I'd suggest:

  • Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
  • Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
  • Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
  • Star Fox 3D
  • Mario Golf: World Tour
  • Mario Kart 7

3DS also plays DS games, if you can get your hands on them:

  • Aliens: Infestation - very Metroid like
  • Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
  • Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks
  • Trauma Center: Under the Knife 1 & 2

I'm surprised you don't like RPGs being a mathematician, it's all stat based gameplay. I figure that would be a benefit to understanding how these games work.

I don't think 3 ds games will become the mainstream, few people here play 3 ds games. With the advent of virtual product, the 3 ds will into to history. If you want to buy a 3 ds back let it become antiques, you can go to dsgameruk, it will teach you how to do it. Good luck.
