http://kotaku.com/5696016/3ds-games-wont-send-developers-broke-but

Now this is just Marvelous talking, but they are a smaller company, so if they are working on "established" IPs before new IPs, and you'd think they'd try to keep costs down as low as possible. They are saying that their 3DS games are looking to have a budget of $800,000 to $1.1 Million, whereas DS titles could've cost $400,000 or so before

No surprise, and I'm happy to see a lot of the place holders on retailer sites for 3DS games indicate the games will be no more than $39.99 (hopefully still some $29.99 ones too) but those are unconfirmed, but seem reasonable

I guess this makes me happy, coz it still is low budget, but scares me that devs, like Marvelous has said, will focus on established IPs before moving to new IPs, due to the higher costs. Hopefully when these devs do make new IPs they sell well, as if the first batch of new 3DS IPs don't sell I'd imagine devs would get more and more frightened to invest heavily in new IPs on a new platform.

I think this is another sign that we can't appoint the 3DS the great successor to the DS and champion of everything that is gaming yet, though it looks positively awesome as a console, third parties need to succeed first for it to live up to the great third party support of the GBA and DS, and we as gamers and consumers hopefully will respond with our wallets when the third party software hits shelves.

Also, is there a third party new IP for 3DS yet other than My Garden? I don't think its that big of a deal to lack new IPs out the gate, but I certainly would love to see some down the line. (also these remakes kinda worry me but when they are 3 of my favorite games I look passed that)

So what are your thoughts on higher 3DS dev costs? I can't imagine it will effect things too much, so long as third parties aren't scaredby slow sales if there are slow sales at first.

I would imagine the leap is about the same, if not less, than the one from the GBA to the DS. Besides, that's completely expected that the costs would jump up that much considering the improvment in technology.

There goes the third party support

If it's going to cost just as much as it would to make games elsewhere there's no longer a reason to put them on a Nintendo handheld

Nintendo is going to have to give these publishers a reason to spend time on the 3DS, the DS needed no help at all because you could take pocket change and make a million seller, now it's going to be riskier.

It's a new system, so not surprising it would go up.

Well the great thing about the hardware of the DS was that it could do a lot on a big or small budget. There were lots of ways to makes games. That stays true for the 3DS. I don't see why games if they cost 400 000 on the DS need to go to 1.1 mil for the 3DS. Devs just need to spend their money a bit more wisely

I'm going to disagree with you. As time goes by and developers learn to harness the power of the 3DS, development costs will go down. Plus, have you seen the launch lineup? Publishers would not have made games for the 3DS unless they thought it would be profitable. What I'm worried about is the development cost of the PSP2 which according to rumours is going to be a beast of a device. I wouldn't worry about the 3DS though.

well it makes sense that its going to cost more to make the 3DS sing...its more powerful and thus needs more people and the skills necessary to make the different elements that make up a game. thats costs moolah. however i suspect that there will be different ways of selling games to 3DS customers and that devs that want to make 2d games rather than 3d wont be hit very hard. with support for openGl2.0 in there alot of current frameworks that make games development easier such as SDL should work with the 3DS, making life a bit easier again for smaller devs. as long as ninty arent taking the whizz on the licencing fees and cost of carts or the cost of putting a game up on 3DS ware i think devs will be fine and the 3DS will remain very attractive to 3rd party devs. unless it tanks in sales of course.

Well it is going to be the highest selling handheld game system on the market. More people = more buyers for games.

It is a new system, so costs are high initially. They will decline as developers get use to the system.

Marvelous is scared of making new IPs yet Level-5 is making like four of them at the same time :P

Developers also said the the 3DS is easy to develop for BTW, but they refused to comment on development cost

My thoughts on the costs are pretty complicated. I think they are going to make the price high like $500, if everyone will find it too high then no one would buy it.
