3DS doubling original DS in revenue and hardware sales

Well quite the accomplishment, the 3DS is now doubling the original DS's sales for the time period of release. Please also note the fact that the DS and it's remodels are currently the most sold video game hardware of all time, and the 3DS is doubling that system's number. That's incredibly impressive, looks like handheld gaming isn't dead yet.

Here's some facts from the article.

• The 3DS has sold 4.5 million units, compared to the original DS's 2.3 million.
• With a library of over 100 physical titles, the 3DS has sold 9 million games; the DS sold 5 million with 58 titles.
• The eShop, which wasn't available in the DS's first year, has over 500 games available. Nintendo wouldn't provide sales statistics, but did mention that on average a consumer downloads five games or programs.
• In terms of general revenue, including software and accessories, the 3DS has generated $1.2 billion; the DS managed $540 million in its first year.

Good to hear it's selling well. I hope to pick it up. I presume when you say original DS, you mean the "chunky" model? The DS sold a lot more when the Lite was released I think, looks counts for a lot with consumers.aquaglow

This is good news for sure. One thing to note though is that Nintendo hedged their bets w/ the DS and continued to market the GBA along side it. The 3DS didn't really have such competition so the comparison is not completely fair. Still, it is doing quite well and it seems like there's a good amount of system selling games in the works so I am quite hopeful as to its continued success.

I'm glad, it's a great handheld. Better sales means developers will be more inclined to make games for it, if I'm correct.

There's a simple reason why the 3DS has sold twice as many as the DS did, it's because the 3DS is twice as good as the DS :P

probably buying or have bought the system and all the games they said was rubbish, LoT: OoT and SF 64 3D as two examples.
